The Rossiter Ready Student - Sleep Matters!
Did You Know?
A well-rested child is more prepared to learn! Most elementary students need 9-12 hours of sleep each night, while preschool-aged children need 10-13 hours. A consistent bedtime routine, limited screen time before bed, and a regular sleep schedule help children arrive at school ready to learn, focus, and succeed.
Why Sleep Matters
Children who get enough sleep tend to have:
- Better attention and focus in class
- Improved learning and memory
- Better behavior and emotional regulation
- Stronger physical health and immune function
- Improved academic performance at school
Children who do not get enough sleep often struggle with attention, learning, memory, behavior, and emotional regulation. A consistent bedtime routine and adequate sleep help students arrive at Rossiter Elementary ready to learn, focus, solve problems, and interact positively with others.
When children do not get adequate sleep, they may experience:
- Difficulty paying attention and concentrating in class, problems with learning and memory, making it harder to retain new information.
- Increased irritability, moodiness, and emotional outbursts which can lead to behavior problems, including impulsivity and difficulty following directions.
- Lower academic performance and reduced classroom engagement.
- More frequent illness due to a weaker immune system.
Hearing & Vision Screenings
Hello from the Health Office,
Routine screenings for hearing and vision will begin at Rossiter Elementary in October. The screenings occur for all new students. Vision screening is for all students in Kindergarten, First Grade, Third Grade, and Fifth Grade. Hearing screenings occur for Kindergarten and First Grade.
If you have any questions or would like to opt out of these screenings, please contact me at Christie Cox 406-324-1407 or email: ccox@helenaschools.org.
I look forward to our school year together!
Sincerely,
Christie Cox BSN RN
Jim Darcy and Rossiter School Nurse

IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM FOOD SERVICE (SODEXO)
Adults who wish to eat a school meal will need to pay by cash or check at the front office. This is an important change from past school years. Adults will no longer be able to charge their meals to a student's account. Parents/Guardians may still eat for free 1x per month with their student except on special event days such as concerts, walk to school day, etc.
Please keep this in mind for future events such as our "Walk to School Day" on October 7th. If adults chose to eat breakfast with their child, they will need to pay $3.50 in the front office that morning.
We appreciate your understanding of this process change.
