Dear District 97 Families,

Welcome to the 2026-27 school year! I am incredibly excited to begin my first year as superintendent of District 97 and, more importantly, to welcome our students back to our classrooms on Aug. 26.

During my first several weeks in the district, I have had the opportunity to listen, learn and experience firsthand what makes District 97 such a special place. One thing is clear: District 97 is about people. The relationships and sense of community across our schools are at the heart of who we are and the work we do together.

That spirit is reflected in our theme for this year, Grow Together. It represents our commitment to learning from one another, strengthening our connections and creating meaningful opportunities for every student to learn and belong.

Our teams have been hard at work preparing for the year ahead, and we can’t wait to welcome our students and staff back. Below you’ll find important information and resources to help your family during the school year.

I look forward to seeing you in our schools and throughout the community. Wishing you a wonderful 2026-27!

Sincerely,

Dr. Terri Bresnahan
Superintendent

We encourage all families who currently qualify to complete the application as soon as possible. Please visit our Food Services webpage for more information.

Food Allergies/Nut-Safe Schools

Nuts and nut products are not allowed in any District 97 schools. This includes products labeled “processed in a facility that shares equipment with nut products.” Our schools have been nut-safe for the past two years — helping to create safer, more inclusive environments for all of our students.

Please visit https://bit.ly/4xFtS83 to access information about the district’s food allergy management program, as well as tips and options for identifying food that is safe for snacks and field trips. We appreciate your support of this important initiative!

6) Keeping Our Schools Safe 6) Keeping Our Schools Safe

As we begin the 2026-27 school year, let’s work together to keep our schools safe and welcoming for everyone. Below are important reminders to help ensure the safety of our students, staff and families. Please visit our District Safety webpage for additional resources.

🏫 Safety Expectations for All Staff

  • Wear your ID badges at all times.

  • Put on safety vests during outdoor supervision.

  • Do not prop doors open—always ensure they close securely.

  • Direct any adult in the building without an ID or Visitor badge to the front office.

📢 Be Aware and Report Concerns

One of the most important things we can do as a community is to speak up when we see something concerning. If you notice anything that seems unusual or unsafe, please report it to an administrator or staff member immediately.

It’s also important that students maintain awareness while walking to and from school. Here are some safety tips compiled by school districts 97 and 200 in partnership with the Oak Park Police Department.

✅ Visitor Reminders

  • All visitors must check in through our Raptor Visitor Management System at the front office. Please bring a valid ID.

  • Once checked in, visitors will receive a temporary badge that must be worn at all times while in the building.

🚨 Emergency Preparedness

Our district follows the "I Love U Guys" Standard Response Protocol, which focuses on safety actions like Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter, and Hold. Learn more about the protocols and what you can do to prepare here: D97 Emergency Preparedness.

🔒 Secure Gun Storage

District 97 is committed to fostering a learning environment in which its students and all community members are emotionally and physically safe. As part of its broader effort to do so, the District is working closely with the Village of Oak Park and Oak Park and River Forest High School District 200 to minimize the risk of gun violence in our schools and in our community (see Board Policy 4:174 - Secure Gun Storage).

Secure storage is a simple action a gun owner can take to reduce access to guns among young people, keeping children and families in our community safe. Best practices for secure storage include storing guns unloaded, locked, and separate from ammunition. Click here to visit the village's webpage about safe firearm storage, which includes information about obtaining free gun locks, conversation starters for parents, and other resources for promoting community safety.

7) Updated Student and Family Handbook 7) Updated Student and Family Handbook

District 97 has updated the Student and Family Handbook for 2026-27. It contains important information regarding school policies, procedures, guidelines, student rights and responsibilities, and notifications required by state and federal law.

The purpose of this handbook is to outline for students, families and staff the expectations for building an educational community where everyone feels safe, included and able to learn. Having shared expectations, procedures and policies helps us respect all members of the school community in which we learn and work every day. Please take the time to read through the handbook and review it with your child.
