Information About Head Lice:
As students are back in school and fall activities are in full swing, we would like to share some information about Head Lice. Please do not be alarmed, as head lice is a common occurrence in schools. Head lice do not carry disease and are not a sign of unclean people or homes. Please see the Mass.gov fact sheet for more information.
Here are some precautions you can take:
Check your child’s hair for eggs (nits).
If you suspect your child has head lice, ask your healthcare provider to diagnose the problem and recommend the appropriate treatment.
Notify your school nurse if your child is diagnosed as having head lice.
If head lice is diagnosed, do not return your child to school until she or he has been treated, and you have cleaned personal items (i.e. jackets, backpacks, etc). Continue to check your child for head lice and nits for the next 2 weeks.
If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact your child’s school nurse.
