District Newsletter

A Note From Mr. Wilson...
The new semester marks a fresh start for students and staff across the district. Classrooms are back into routine, and learning is moving forward at a steady pace. Expectations are clear, and our focus remains on high-quality instruction and student growth. This time of year also allows us to reflect on what is working and make adjustments where needed. Overall, the semester is off to a strong and productive start.
The district newsletter will shift away from recapping individual school communications. Instead, it will focus on larger, district-wide topics and provide context around priorities, decisions, and long-term direction.
Mr. Dustin Wilson, Superintendent of Schools.
Emergency Safety Protocols
Building principals and I have been working on our school safety procedures for situations where we need to clear hallways and ensure student safety. Moving forward, we will use a color-coded system to notify students and staff about potential issues.
Code Green – This will be used when hallways need to be cleared, but there is no threat to student safety. Most often, this will occur when EMS needs access to the building to assist a student or staff member. The office will announce a Code Green over the intercom, and all students will report back to their classrooms. Only parents or family members who need to be contacted will be notified, which helps protect the privacy of those involved.
Code Yellow – This will be used under the advisement of law enforcement. The office will announce a Code Yellow, and students will report back to their classrooms while buildings and classrooms are secured. There may be a situation in the area, but students are not in immediate danger. Communication to the public will occur once law enforcement advises that the situation is under control and students are safe.
Code Red – This indicates a threat on school grounds or within the immediate vicintity. A Code Red may be advised by law enforcement or activated by school personnel if necessary and they are able.
This system has been adopted to reduce confusion and questions surrounding announcements related to sheltering in place, while also protecting privacy when appropriate. Student safety remains the top priority in our district, and we believe this system will help streamline procedures within our buildings. As always, if you have questions, please reach out to me at the district office.
5-Year Strategic Plan
We are excited to announce that the USD 243 Board of Education will be working with KASB and the patrons of USD 243 to develop a new five-year strategic plan for the district.
A five-year strategic plan is important because it provides clear direction and focus for the district’s work. It helps ensure that decisions are intentional, aligned, and tied to long-term goals rather than short-term reactions. The plan also creates a shared understanding of priorities among the board, staff, and community. By involving patrons in the work, the district can better reflect community values and expectations. Most importantly, a strong strategic plan helps guide resources, programming, and facilities in ways that best support student learning and success.
Work on the strategic plan will begin in the coming months, and we will seek input from staff, parents, students, and community members. That feedback will help shape priorities and identify areas of focus for the district. Please be on the lookout for communication from the district in the coming months as this work gets underway.
