A Bright Future for the IB at Anglo European
Mrs Porsz, IB Coordinator writes, More than 100 parents and pupils logged into view our annual "A level or IB, What's your Future?" webinar on Tuesday, where Mr Porter and Dr McDermott outlined in detail the four routes in our Sixth Form, and answered questions live. We hope those who attended found it useful.
During the event, some questions arose about funding of the IB Diploma Programme in the future. We are pleased to be able to reassure prospective students in this regard. We are fortunate as a school, as our four-routes model allows us to continue with the IB Diploma Programme and the Leadership Team and Governors have prioritised funding to do so.
Anglo European School was the first state secondary school in the UK to offer the IB Diploma and the first to offer the IB Career Related Programme as a vocational route through the Sixth Form. It continues to be a leading practitioner and is proud to be an IB World School. We have consistently beaten World Averages for the IB Diploma, with many Diploma graduates progressing successfully to Oxbridge, Russell Group and International Universities. Whilst you may study the IB Diploma in some of the leading private schools in Essex, Anglo European remains the only state school IB provision. The IB ethos and philosophy remains central to our mission and aims and the school is proud to offer such a broad and varied curriculum Post 16.
Mrs Gee, Headteacher added, "The IB philosophy is part of the school DNA; the curriculum is predicated on breadth and depth, offering a wide range of subjects. All our students take at least 4 courses of study and study CAS (Creativity, Activity and Service) as well as a core of RSHE, Citizenship and Career-related learning, including compulsory work experience. Our international Sixth Form is outstanding for good reason - it is distinctive, ambitious and provides so many wonderful enrichment activities to support students studying languages or who are interested in an international education including visits to France, Germany, Spain, China, Poland, Austria, South Korea, Japan, Switzerland and Italy. It's been a pleasure to welcome so many students to the morning tours this week to see the Sixth Form in session."
Anglo Award Pathway
The Anglo Award Pathway was created to ensure that every student has the opportunity to achieve, belong and thrive. This term, we were delighted to celebrate a significant milestone as the first students on the programme received their first AQA Unit Award Scheme certificates, recognising their commitment, determination and success.
The Anglo Award Pathway is a specialist programme for a small group of Year 8 and 9 students with SEND. Delivered in a supportive small-group environment, it provides a personalised curriculum built around practical, meaningful learning and nationally recognised AQA awards. Students develop literacy, numeracy and life skills through engaging real-world experiences, with every completed unit earning a certificate that celebrates their progress and achievements.
From story writing and gardening to cooking, budgeting, travel planning and exploring their local community, students are encouraged to discover new strengths, build confidence and develop skills for life. The programme gives them opportunities to belong within a nurturing learning community, thrive through experiences tailored to their individual needs, and in turn, achieve through regular recognition of their successes.
When asked for their feedback on the new programme, the students spoke warmly about the opportunities it provides. Ben described the Anglo Award Pathway as “even better than good because it’s hands-on”, highlighting the practical nature of the learning. Demie reflected that “we learn through having fun, I’ve liked learning about lots of different places”, while Alisha-Mai perfectly captured the spirit of the pathway, describing it as “fun, creative and full of enthusiasm”.
Receiving their first certificates is a wonderful achievement and a proud moment for both students and staff. These awards represent far more than completed units; they reflect growing confidence, resilience and a willingness to embrace new challenges. We look forward to celebrating many more successes as our Anglo Award Pathway students continue to achieve, belong and thrive. Congratulations to every student who has earned their first certificate.

Rebuild Update
We are pleased to report that good progress continues to be made with our school rebuild programme. The temporary teaching buildings are now in place, with the internal works moving forward well. The planned moves for SEN and K Block remain on schedule to take place during the October half-term holiday.
The temporary car park and new access arrangements have now been completed, while work on the Ground Source Heat Pump system is continuing. Some additional work is also being carried out to the temporary teaching building, but at present this is not expected to affect the planned occupation date of February 2027. Within the Sanctuary, some structural issues have been identified and these are being carefully assessed by a structural engineer before the next stage of work begins.
We have also been working closely with Kier to ensure that the school footpath and the exit route from A Block remain protected and accessible during term time. A significant programme of work is planned for the October half-term break, allowing us to make the most of the period when students are not on site and continue progressing the project safely and efficiently. We appreciate the patience and understanding of our pupils, parents, staff and wider school community while these important improvements take place, and we look forward to sharing further progress with you.
Year 11 Geography
Our Year 11 Geographers returned from Wales with wonderful memories, stronger friendships and a wealth of first-hand geographical fieldwork experience which brought their classroom learning to life. The weather was certainly changeable, with a mixture of rain showers and welcome bursts of sunshine, but students showed fantastic resilience throughout, tackling every task with enthusiasm. They completed urban fieldwork questionnaires, measured river channel characteristics, explored beach profiles and investigated sea defences, while also finding time to enjoy the beautiful Welsh landscape. Evenings were just as memorable, with games of hide and seek in the woods, plenty of laughter over table football, Traitors viewing and opportunities to build friendships.
Students now have a wealth of detailed fieldwork notes, first-hand experience of geographical investigation and a much greater confidence in learning outside the classroom, giving them an excellent foundation for success in the months ahead. We are incredibly proud of the resilience, teamwork and good humour they demonstrated throughout a week that was both hard-working and great fun. One student said: "This is the best visit I've been on and it was great that we could be in and outside of the classroom every day. It felt really tiring but I feel much more confident now on Paper 3. I also met new friends and had fun with the teachers, especially when they played hide and seek in the woods." and another commented "I think it was a very useful and fun experience that really helped improve my understanding of geography. Experiencing things first hand like going into the river has also helped me remember things."
Spanish
Our Year 10 and 11 students who are in our UAS classes for French, German and Spanish have been working hard and having their language learning achievement recognised through the AQA Unit Award Scheme.
This week, Year 10 Spanish UAS students, received their first 2 certificates, one on the theme of 'leisure' and another on 'Spanish celebrity culture'. This route allows students to develop their language skills through a more bespoke course and they will gather a folder full of certificates over the 2-year course.
Careers - can you inspire our students? Can you help with their career goals?
We are recruiting volunteers for our in-school careers events – please let us know if you can help enrich and educate our students on the world that awaits them beyond school.
Anglo European Careers Convention: Wednesday 25 November 2026, 14:30-17:30, Y9-U6
This 'mini trade fair' style event provides students with the opportunity to meet professionals face-to-face; to ask them questions about routes into their career or company they are representing and allow them to find out about career opportunities and entry points. Would you be able to set up a stall at our Careers Convention and speak to students about your company and career pathways?
Anglo European World of Work (WOW) Day, Friday 22 January 2027, 08:30-13:30
This popular career day for our Year 11 students provides them with an opportunity to get ready for the world of work. Students prepare a CV, explore career options, and are provided an opportunity to take part in mock job interviews with genuine employers. To do this, we would like to invite you to host mock interviews with our students and provide feedback on their interview skills.
Please complete the Careers Volunteers Form if you can help. If you have any questions regarding either of the above events, please email enterprise@aesessex.co.uk
