Sandhill E-News
Welcome Back!
A Message from Mr. Johnson:
I hope you all are having a wonderful summer. It's hard to believe that the beginning of school is right around the corner. Here are a couple of events to put on your radar:
- Classroom Placements: Each year we work diligently to place students in the classroom environments we believe that they will be the most successful in. Class placements are live in Infinite Campus. Although it is unlikely, there is always the possibility that your child's teacher may change prior to the school year starting.
- Conferences: Please sign up below for your individual back to school conferences with your child's teacher. (Below)
- School Supplies: I have attached our school supply list below. If you need help with supplies, please reach out to Kayla McDermot (kayla.mcdermot@stoughton.k12.wi.us), our school social worker, for help.
We are so excited to see you and your children on the hill!
Bob/Mr. Johnson

Annual Permission Form
Please follow this link to give your permission for your child to accompany their class on any field trips off campus that may occur during the 24-25 school year.
On this form you will also be asked if you approve that your child's finger be scanned in order for them to purchase school lunch from Taher.
School Hours
Office hours: 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
School hours: 7:45 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Doors open at 7:35 a.m.
Please try to get your student to school by 7:35 every day. It gives your students ample time to get to their locker, chat with friends, and grab breakfast. Most classroom teachers start morning meeting at 7:45 and it is hard for kids to walk in late to the classroom when their classmates have already begun the day.
If students are not in their classroom at 7:45 they will be marked tardy. If they arrive at 8:30 or later, they will be marked absent.
Arrival and Departure Procedures
Bus arrival: Students arriving by bus will enter the building at 7:35 a.m. All students will enter the building at 7:35 and proceed to their classrooms or to the cafeteria if they are getting a school breakfast. If you have any questions regarding transportation, please call 608-877-5062
Sandhill students can be dropped off at school at 7:30. The first bell rings at 7:35. School starts at 7:45. Students enter the school by grade level at the following doors from 7:35 - 7:45:
- 4th & 5th Grade - Door #11, by the gym;
- 2nd and 3rd grade - Door #1 (the main entrance);
- Kindergarten and 1st grade - Door #2 to the right of the main entrance (aka The Bridge).
After 7:45 all students enter Door #1.
Parents/guardians may drop their children off at the outside door. Students proceed to their classroom by themselves or with the help of Sandhill staff. Parents/guardians wait outside after school for their student at dismissal at 3:00 pm.
Please note: Only buses and families of students who need accommodations are to use the bus circle during drop off/pick up.
Students Picked Up From School by Someone not listed in Infinite Campus: A note or a phone call must be received from the parent or guardian for your child to be picked up by you or someone else after school, for an appointment during school hours, or if you will change the normal after-school route home. If you need to call the school with this information, please call the Sandhill Office (877-5400) to leave a message; do not leave a voicemail for the teacher. So that the office staff has sufficient time to deliver your message to your student, please contact the school before 2:45 p.m.
Please see the following map for vehicle drop off / pick up information.
Late Arrival/Early Dismissal During School
What if I Drop Off after 7:45 am?
Please walk your child into the building to sign them in for the day.
What about mid-day arrival or departures?
- Parents/guardians should contact the office in advance with the time of pick up. Please provide the name of the person picking up, name of the student(s), and their teacher(s).
- Parents/guardians may need to show ID at pick-up time.
What if my student is absent?
If a student is absent or tardy, parents/guardians must contact the school by either calling the school attendance line or sending a note to the office.
To leave an absence message, please call 877-5400 and listen to the attendance line prompt. Provide your name, child’s name, homeroom teacher, date of absence, and reason for absence. Do not call your child's classroom teacher with this information.
When a student is absent and the parent/guardian has not contacted the school, an automated safe arrival message will be sent to your phone(s) and/or email advising you that your child is not present in school. If you do not confirm the absence, your child will be marked with an “unexcused” absence. For further information regarding the School Board of Education and the State of Wisconsin policies for student Attendance, please consult the 2023-24 Stoughton Area School District Legal Notices and Student Policy Handbook.
Attendance Policy
A student may be excused by a parent/guardian for ten full days per school year. The parent or guardian must call the school to excuse the absence. These absences are considered parent-excused absences.
Partial days combine to contribute to the 10 excused absences a student may have each year. The following explains a ‘partial’ day: Arriving later than 8:30 a.m. or departing earlier than 2:15 p.m. would count as one half-day absence. Two half-days would combine into a full day.
Any absences beyond the ten parent excused absences will be considered unexcused unless the absence is included in the list of excusable absences below.
Students who have accumulated 5 or more unexcused absences per semester are considered by the school board and the State of Wisconsin to be habitually truant.
At this point, a meeting between school staff and the parent/guardian would be held to develop an attendance improvement plan. We understand that various barriers may prevent regular attendance, and we are committed to working with you to overcome them.
When the attendance improvement plan is made, the student’s attendance will be monitored and is expected to improve. If no improvement is made, the school may file with the court that the student is habitually truant. The parent/guardian may receive a fine of over $500.
Students can be excused for these specific reasons:
Medical, dental, counseling or other professional appointments that cannot be scheduled outside the school day may be medically excused with proper written documentation from the provider.
A court appearance or other legal procedure that requires the student’s presence.
An emergency in the family or other crisis that requires the student to be absent
A death in the immediate family, or funerals for relatives or close friends.
Religious holiday.
Absence from school during a period of suspension or expulsion.
Approved school activities during class time.
Special circumstances that show good cause and which are approved by the school principal.
School Security Measures
Sandhill Elementary School implements the Raptor System as a safety and security measure. During school hours, all doors will be locked. Visitors must enter through the main door at the front entrance, where the front office staff will buzz them.
SECURED ENTRANCES – All of our doors will be locked during the school day from 7:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. When a visitor comes to the building during the school day, they will see a silver button to the left of the doors. They should press the silver button and wait for an office staff member to unlock the door and admit them into the building. Once admitted into the building, the visitor proceeds to the office.
RAPTOR – Once a visitor enters the office, they will present state-issued identification to an office staff member. If it is the visitor’s first time visiting a building, their ID card (usually a state issued drivers license) will be scanned into Raptor. Raptor collects the ID photo, name, date of birth, and first four digits of the license number on the identification to perform an instant sex offender background check against databases in all 50 states. Once that person’s ID is scanned, they are entered into the system. The office staff member will identify whether the individual is visiting the building or volunteering in a specific area or classroom. Once this information is entered, a visitor badge will be printed with the visitor’s name, picture, and destination in the building. When the visitor is leaving, they must stop back in the main office to check out.
We Are Allergy Aware
We are a nut-aware district and ask that our students and families be aware and considerate of the medical needs of our students/staff. We strongly discourage sending any nut or nut products to school with your children.
Monthly Working For Kids (WFK) Meetings
What: We meet monthly to plan events and work on ways to continue to support our students and our staff here at Sandhill. From fun events such as the Annual Fall Festival and Crane Games, Scholastic Book Fairs, and the Read-a-thon to providing snacks and meals for our staff and celebrating Staff Appreciation Week every spring, we are busy year-round and are always looking for new faces and new ideas.
When: Our first meeting of this school year is Monday, August 19 at 6:30pm. Starting in September, we meet the second Monday of every month at 6:30 pm (exception is April 15 due to no school on April 8). Meetings last about one hour.
Where: Sandhill Elementary School Library
***If you would like to attend a meeting but are unable to do so in person, please let us know and we are happy to provide a Zoom link.
***We love it when we can provide childcare during our meetings. So if someone in your household (middle schooler, high schooler, or adult) is interested in earning some extra cash, please consider signing up! Sign up to babysit during our monthly WFK meeting!
