Have a lovely half-term and we look forward to welcoming you back on Tuesday 3rd June.
Little Pearls Learning Update
This half term in Nursery we have enjoyed getting exploring both our indoor and outdoor areas, and have loved spending time in the sunshine!
During the beginning of this half term, our intent was to learn about recycling and explore different materials, celebrating Earth day fell during this week which prompted us to explore further and find out as much as possible about how we can keep our planet safe.
We enjoyed painting some wonderful Earth pictures which we glued to our recycled outfits, the children then proudly paraded their outfits in front of all their big friends.
The children have been busy sorting recycling into different piles recognising the different coloured bins and looking out for the logo in their packages.
The children have continued to recycle their rubbish and are showing a conscious effort of how we can look after our planet, turning off lights, closing the windows, turning off the taps and picking up our rubbish.
Whilst outside on the field we have had a go at making seed bombs from recycled shredded paper, the children strengthened their hand muscles and fine motors skills by squeezing and squelching the mushed paper into balls before planting, watering, and caring for their growing seeds. We have enjoyed role playing and making boats from large loose parts and continue to look after to the local wildlife by making tasty bird feeders.
In our tactile play we have been strengthening hand muscles again making snails from playdough, shells and clay.
We have been exploring sea animals in our story telling tray, hiding in sea foam and rockpools, exploring different textures and retelling the stories we have heard.
We have been busy getting moving this half term, and the children have enjoyed Squiggle whilst we wiggle, dough disco and parachute games as part of our daily routine.
A huge thank you to anyone who voted for us using the Tesco blue tokens we were able to purchase some fantastic play equipment that the children have loved balancing on and negotiating different obstacles.
We can't wait to see the children's confidence, physical development, and imagination grow using this equipment.
During our last week we have had a fantastic trip to The Deep, where the children enjoyed watching the different sea creatures and learning more about them, we were very proud of how well our youngest children behaved, they did us proud as always!
Our Learning
Pearls
This half term our theme has been ‘Under the Sea’. We started learning about all the different fish and animals that can be found under the sea. We have read ‘Tiddler’ and ‘The Snail and the Whale’ both books by Julia Donaldson. We have talked about all the stories Julia Donaldson has written that we have enjoyed listening to. We have identified and described the features of sea creatures and we have learnt about the differences between fish and mammals.
Then our focus moved onto rock pools, we talked about the creatures we would find in a rock pool and the habitat of a rock pool. We also talked about rules for rock pooling, and how to stay safe on the coast. Over the last few weeks, we have focused on marine transport and lighthouses. We have labelled the parts of a submarine and looked at the job of a submarine and the crew onboard. We have also learnt about different jobs associated with the coast, for example: fishermen, lighthouses keepers etc.
In our provision we have been enjoying being outside on our beach or serving snacks from our beach café. We have also enjoyed building animal enclosures with our blocks, moving water with our pipes and tubes and making shelters from the sunshine. We have been making playdough sea snails, sorting animals according to habitat and using our phonics to label a rock pool and marine life. Finally, we have been making boats from various materials, to find out which ones float and which ones sink. We have also been writing a ‘message in a bottle’ to our friends and family.
In maths lessons, during the first two weeks, we have been focusing on numbers 10-20. We have been recognising these numbers, counting on from a given number and matching given amounts. We have been working on careful counting when counting numbers greater than 10 and playing games that involve counting on from a given number. We have also been adding and subtracting numbers up to 10. This week, we have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes, remembering their names and talking about their properties (sides, corners, faces and edges) we have also been trying to recognise shapes in different rotations - which we initially found tricky! We have also been comparing shapes and finding the ‘odd one out’ in a selection of three.
On Monday, we had a lovely day visiting ‘The Deep’. We saw lots of fish, sharks, turtles and penguins and we had an interactive story workshop, which we all thoroughly enjoyed! This week we have also had a visitor from the RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institute) who came into our class to talk about their job.
It has been a very busy half term! Have a lovely half term break and we will look forward to seeing you in June when our theme changes to ‘Food and Farming’.
Rubies
What a fantastic half term we have had in Rubies. The children have loved getting involved in our topic of The Artic. We have made animals, researched habitats, investigated climates and compared the Artic to where we live. Our topic was made much more real during our amazing visit to The Deep this week! The children were an absolute credit to yourselves and the school, they were superb! We throughout enjoyed exploring the Deep and taking part in a fabulous workshop all about The Artic and The Antarctic. We played games to help us find out more about animals that live in these places, what their habitats are like, how they are suited to their habitats and all about food chains. Some of the children’s favourite parts of the day were visiting the penguins and watching the puffer fish in the large tank.
In Geography we have researched The Artic, identifying their climate, comparing the differences between The Artic and where we live and looked at animals that live here. Within this topic we have also learnt about living things in Science. The children have created food chains for animals, learnt about the habitat they live in and how they are all suited to their environments.
In RE we have learnt all about the creation story, comparing the creation story from Christianity and Buddhism. We have asked some ‘big questions’ linked to the creation stories and the children were very sensible when thinking about how we many answers some of these questions. We learnt more about the Buddhist faith, who their leader is and what rules Buddhists follow. We talked about reincarnation and karma and the children thought of ways people can act to ensure good Karma.
In English we have looked at instructional writing, the features of an instructional text and what they may be used for. The children have worked in groups to create their own instructions for different playground games. Children will be writing their own instructions for how to fly to the moon after half term.
The children throughout enjoyed their reading reward yesterday, a big thank you to all of your for helping the children with their reading and home.
Wishing you all a wonderful half term break
The Rubies Team
Diamonds
What a fantastic and busy half term it’s been in Diamonds Class! Our learning journey has taken us through exciting topics across the curriculum, and the children have shown great enthusiasm and curiosity every step of the way.
In History, we’ve been diving into the fascinating world of Monarchs and Power. The children especially enjoyed learning about the dramatic reign of Henry VIII, exploring how monarchs ruled and influenced the country through time.
This led perfectly into our English lessons, where we wrote detailed non-chronological reports all about Henry VIII. The children impressed us with their research skills and creativity, producing informative and well-structured texts that showcased their growing confidence as writers.
In Science, our focus has been on plants—how they grow, what they need to survive, and the process of germination. Each child has planted and is now caring for their very own sunflower, and we’re all eagerly watching to see whose will grow the tallest!
In Maths, we’ve been working hard on fractions and decimals. From recognising and comparing fractions to converting them into decimals, the children have tackled these tricky concepts with determination and growing skill.
Our RE topic this half term has been Sacred Places. We’ve explored places of worship from different religions, thinking about why they are important and what makes a place sacred. The children have been incredibly thoughtful and respectful in their discussions.
As always, we are so proud of all the hard work and enthusiasm shown by the Diamonds Class. Thank you for your continued support—wishing you all a restful and sunny break!
Sapphires
What an amazing half term we’ve had in the Sapphires.
The main event of course was SATs week where all of the Year 6 children worked so hard and really did their absolute best! We are so proud of them all. The final booster session was an enjoyable one with a doughnut wall as a treat. All the Year 6 children got a treat, a bacon sandwich and a water fight on the final Friday as well!
At the beginning of the first week back after Easter, we had a wonderful day for Earth Day. The Sapphires made items of fashion out of recycling and used a photo frame to produce some super selfies.
Over the half term, the Sapphires have produced some persuasive speeches in the style of Greta Thunberg. It was wonderful to see some of the pupils present these speeches to other children in the school. As well as focussing on Climate Change, Sapphires have also been researching the genre science fiction. They loved comparing the 1953 film version to the 2005 film War of the Worlds and enjoyed an end of SATs treat watching the film and eating popcorn. They then wrote and presented some amazing prologues in the style of HG Wells.
In guided reading, the Sapphires are reading Cosmic. A funny story about a child who gets lost in space – will he survive? We will find out in next half term!
Another highlight for this half term has to be VE Day celebrations. It was wonderful to see all the children in red, white and blue and all the parents that joined us for a party in the afternoon!
In maths, the Sapphires have focussed on geometry. They were able to reason using angles, visualise nets and create posters on 2D and 3D shapes. This week, the Sapphires are solving problems.
During geography work this half term, the Sapphires have discussed the negative impacts of climate change and what we can do to make a positive change. They have created some wonderful persuasive posters all about climate change.
In Science, the children have investigated planets and the solar system. They created fact files on certain planets and researched how many days it takes each planet to orbit the sun.
As part of our careers based learning this week, Hull College came in and delivered a Future First presentation giving children the opportunity to consider their aspirations and dream jobs.
The trip to Driffield Food and Farming was an absolute highlight this Wednesday. The children again got the opportunity to learn about the range of careers in food and farming. The ice cream treat at lunchtime was perfect in the sunny weather. The ice cream was enjoyed again as part of the reading reward this week. Remember to read on seesaw ready for the last reading reward of the school year!
Lots to look forward to next half term including dads to lunch, fire service visit, Y6 camping out, transition and leavers’ celebrations, Welton Waters fun day and of course our end of year production!
The Sapphires team (Mrs. Dean, Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. Wilde) would like to wish you all a Happy Half Term!! Have a good rest and we will see you back in school on Tuesday 3rd June.
Reminders and Events
P.E Kit
Please ensure that P.E kit is in school all week and is named.
Children with longer hair need to ensure that this is tied up for P.E so please ensure that your child has a bobble within school.
Food
Please remember that we are nut free and therefore nut products are not permitted. Thank you for your support in this.
Suncream
As the weather warms up please ensure that your child has suncream and that this is applied before school. If your child needs support to put on their suncream staff can assist them.
Many thanks.
Arbor Permissions
Please ensure that you have logged into Arbor and on the main page and filled in the consent question which appear near the top. Thank you to all who have already done this.
A new permission has been added about allowing us to speak to other agencies and professionals this includes services such as the Educational Psychologist and Speech and Language. If a referral was then needed to one of these services a discussion would occur first before referral.
Outdoor Shoes Mondays and Wednesdays
Please can we ask that your child has outdoor shoes available to them on a Monday or Wednesday as Mrs Beadle often takes out groups to the outdoor allotment area which does get muddy. If you would like to leave these in school please feel free.
If anyone has any wellies that no longer fit they would be happy to donate this would be wonderful. We hope to build up a collection through some fundraising so that all children will have a pair of wellies available to them in school for these sessions.
Nursery Bookings
Please can all nursery bookings for the following week be emailed to the school office no later than each Thursday. Thank you.
Village Youth Club
A number of people in Swinefleet are trying to set up a youth club for the children but need your views. It would be really appreciated if you could fill in their short survey below.
Homework and Supporting Your Child at Home
Mental Maths Challenges
Our mental maths challenges have been launched and are tailored to your child's current stage. As they conquer an objective they can cut off a strip and bring it in to be tested. They do not have to learn every objective on the sheet in one go. When they have mastered an objective they can spin our wheel and see how many raffle ticket entries they win. We will have draws throughout the year with our first one being on Friday 4th April.
Some stages and objectives take longer to conquer than others so your child may feel they are not managing to get as many raffle tickets as others at times. Please encourage them to keep going though as other stages they may well race through as they might have to learn specific facts such as number of days in a month rather than calculations on a later stage.
Children in Reception will receive their first stage after half-term.
We would love you to support your child with this at home as these skills help them tremendously with their maths work and are ones they we will be using continuously throughout their learning.
Reading
Regular reading is crucial in supporting children to develop their reading skills. In school we read with/ or to the children daily in every year group.
We love to see your reading and engage with it so it is great if this can be uploaded to Tapestry or Seesaw. Some of the children will film themselves reading and the staff then follow the stories with them. In Sapphires, the children often comment back and forth with staff based on what they are reading and staff are left on a cliffhanger waiting for the next read upload to find out what is happening.
Remember we offer reading clubs at lunchtime and after school and these are equivalent to three reads each.
Reading reward points needed:
Bronze - 15
Silver - 20
Gold - 30
Menu and Diary Dates
Please see the menu below. Children can have a hot dinner on any day and do not need to be hot dinners all week. Dinners do not need to be pre-booked.
Dinners can be paid for via Arbor. Children in Reception, Year One and Year Two are entitled to Universal Free School Meals.
Free School Meals are available to some children dependent on household income. If you think you could be eligible there is more information available via Apply for free school meals - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) or Mrs Risebury will happily give you further information of how to apply.

Attendance
This Academic Year
Whole school attendance: 94%
The attendance figure all pupils and schools are expected to aim for is 97%+
School attendance is vital in supporting children's progress and preparing them for their future careers. We appreciate sometimes children are unwell and need to be off school which cannot be helped. Below are some information leaflets which you may find useful.
Other Useful Links and Resources for Families
Relationships Support from East Riding
We know that conflict is a normal part of relationships, and we also know that it's not conflict that is the problem, but how we deal with it.
Evidence shows that ongoing, poorly-resolved conflict can have a damaging effect on children’s well-being and happiness. The Relationship Matters website provides tips and support local to you and within the site, there are some great tools, such as the Amity's Little Book of Relationship Care, and links to a broad range of websites, including Mind, and the One Plus One site, which supports separating parents to handle arguments better.
There is also Separating Better, a useful app for families going through separation.
