This Week at WHS

Thank you for another great week at Whiteford High School. Next week we will begin Fall Testing. Please see dates for testing below.

Fall PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) testing will take place on…

October 28th for grades 8 and 9 (PSAT 8/9) and

October 29th for students in grades 10/11 (NMSQT).

It is important for students to show their best effort as they "practice" for spring testing and show growth on these College Board Assessments. Juniors can qualify for scholarships by showing high achievement on the NMSQT. Additionally, student test scores let us know what instructional adjustments need to be made.

We appreciate your support in giving us the best opportunity to measure your child’s growth by making sure your child has plenty of rest, a good breakfast and is on time for the scheduled assessment day. Parents should click HERE for a FAQ page regarding the NMSQT test.

Students in grades 8/9 will need to make sure their Chromebooks are fully charged for Wednesday, October 28th and students in grades 10/11 will need them charged for Thursday, October 29th.

We will also be doing Red Ribbon Week next week. Please see our Red Ribbon Flyer for special spirit dress days next week!

Teachers continue to reinforce positive behaviors our students as they give students PBIS tickets for students who are displaying our school-wide expectations of being Safe, Respectful and Responsible.

We have started having students serve lunch detentions once they receive three tardies in one course. We are continuing to reinforce the importance of being on time to class. If your student earns a lunch detention please continue to talk with them about the importance of being on time to class.

Our District-Wide Behavior Trait for October is Inclusion.

School Picture Re-Take information is in its own section below.

We continue to build our school culture through our PBIS program.

  1. School Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. This system reinforces positive behavior choices. PBIS Matrix
  2. We also had great conversations around our District Wide Personal Wireless Device Policy
  3. School Dress Code

Important Reminder for our Student Drivers

Please take a moment to remind your student driver(s) about the importance of safe driving while arriving at and leaving school.

The school zone speed limit is 25 MPH during the following times:

Morning: 7:30 AM-8:30 AM

Afternoon: 2:30 PM-3:30 PM

Slowing down is not only about following the posted speed limit; during arrival and dismissal, there are students walking through the parking lot, getting into vehicles, boarding buses, and crossing areas where traffic is moving.

There is also increased stop-and-go traffic as parents and family members arrive to pick up and drop off students. Driving at a slower speed gives drivers more time to react to pedestrians, buses, vehicles stopping unexpectedly, and changing traffic patterns.

Please remind students to stay alert, put distractions away, be patient, and slow down while traveling through the school zone and parking areas.

Michigan College Application Month

October is Michigan College Application Month, and it’s a great time for our Whiteford seniors to take the next step toward life after high school!

Throughout the month, many Michigan colleges and universities are making the application process easier by waiving application fees, while several colleges already offer no application fee year-round.

Seniors, now is the time to:

  • Explore colleges and programs that interest you
  • Review admission requirements and deadlines
  • Take advantage of free college applications
  • Submit applications early and stay ahead of deadlines
  • Reach out to the Guidance Office if you need help along the way

Be sure to check out the Michigan College Month resources pictured here for participating colleges and application fee information. Whether you're just beginning your college search or you're ready to hit “submit,” October is a great month to make progress on your plans after Whiteford!
