More UPGRADES!!!
Cafeteria Tables
We LOVE making Phelps a better place for our students! Our Student Government held a top-secret vote back in November and finally revealed an exciting new upgrade to the Phelps community at our January all-school meeting! In the coming months, Phelps will have all new cafeteria tables, including some that are ADA compliant and have places for wheelchairs. Students voted on the designs and colors. We can't wait to see our new tables!
Classroom Cruisers
Phelps is excited to have two Classroom Cruisers!
The new Self-regulation Classroom Cruiser is designed to provide opportunities for students to self-regulate through movement without having to leave or disrupt the class. It is ideal for inclusive environments and helps kinesthetic learners and any student who needs to get the wiggles out so they can refocus and engage in learning. In just a ten-minute ride, students can become more engaged and ready to learn.
- "Studies show that after a 5-minute movement break, second-grade students exhibited greater concentration and demonstrated higher math fluency." (Education I. P., 2010, p. 22)
- "Eight of nine studies found that offering physical activity breaks during standard classroom instruction have favorable associations with concentration, appropriate behaviors, and academic achievement." (Education I. P., 2010, p. 29)
Student Government Update
Our Student Government has been very busy! They recently facilitated a school wide survey to get feedback from all students on:
1. What is your favorite part about Phelps School?
2. What would you change about Phelps School?
3. How can Student Government make Phelps a better place to learn?
4. What events or activities should we consider this year?
Representatives took turns sharing the results at our January all-school meeting. In our next meeting, we will be looking through the results to make a ballot for every student at Phelps to vote on.
Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is coming back this spring to Phelps! Be on the lookout for more information. This is an amazing program for girls in grades 3 & 4.
GOTR is a youth development initiative focused on empowering girls through physical activity, where participants in grades 3-8 will engage in a curriculum designed to build social, emotional, and physical skills while culminating in a celebratory 5K race, with the aim of inspiring confidence and healthy habits in young girls. The program goes beyond just running, incorporating lessons on self-esteem, body positivity, conflict resolution, and healthy decision-making through interactive activities and discussions alongside physical exercise.
MCAS
MCAS testing is right around the corner. Students in grades three and four are required to take this state test in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA) and Math. It is important that all students are present and on time for these tests. Here is the testing schedule for this spring.

Healthy Heart Challenge
For nearly 50 years, the American Heart Association has been partnering with educators in elementary, middle and high schools across the nation to help educate students about healthy living.
The Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge are service-learning based fundraising programs that give students the opportunity to feel good, while doing good. Itβs a way for students to better their life β all while changing someone elseβs.
Phelps is kicking off our Kids Heart Challenge! Our event is the week of February 10-14 during PE
Classes.

Flu Season is Here!
Valentine's Day Reminder π
On a happier note, we are already heading into February and inching closer to spring. Many of our students love to celebrate Valentineβs day and other special occasions with their classrooms. Here at Phelps, we have a considerable amount of students with food allergies. For this reason, it is preferable to avoid snacks and candy for special occasions, substituting instead with small toys and trinkets. However, If you choose to send your student in with special treats please make sure to adhere to Agawam School Districtβs Wellness Policy. Per policy, treats must be pre-packaged, peanut and tree nut free and come from a tree nut and peanut free facility. Check with your classroom teacher prior to sending in any treats. Please contact the nurse with any questions at 413- 821- 9368. Thank you!
Phelps Attendance Update - End of January
We know that showing up matters, and that when students show up to learn, they are more likely to be able to stay on-track, stay engaged and meet major educational milestones.
We are at 95.5% average daily attendance as a school.
DID YOU KNOW?
- Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just one or two days every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance. children catch up.
- Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help Attending school regularly helps children feel better about schoolβand themselves.
Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college.
January Bulletin Boards Around Phelps
Crystal Apple Award for January π
The staff Crystal Apple Award winner for December is Mrs. Wilson!
Mrs. Wilson is one of the most kind, smart, silly, relatable and relational people you could ever be so lucky to meet! There isnβt a student in her class or an adult who knows her well that wouldnβt agree with that! Her ability to bring the best in people, help them realize their potential and internalize it over time is truly unmatched! Mrs. Wilson deserves to know how much her hidden in plain sight day after day relational contributions mean to the people around her!
Mrs. Wilson is a highly engaging and skilled teacher, often combining her sense of humor with her knowledge of the curriculum, which helps increase the studentsβ engagement and their own knowledge. Her interactive lesson delivery followed by vivid discussions spark our studentsβ curiosity and before they know it, they are performing at their best and mastering more academic and social/emotional skills! Mrs. Wilson is also an amazing colleague who is willing to share ideas and collaborate with teammates, as well as share materials, provide support and troubleshoot ideas, while maintaining a positive outlook and enthusiasm that can easily put a smile on anyoneβs face.
