Head Cheetah Message
Families,
Our grade 3 students have completed their state summative testing. We are so proud of our learners’ perseverance and positive attitudes! We’ll continue with year-end assessments in all grades next week.
This week was Teacher Appreciation Week, AND Wednesday was School Nurse Appreciation Day!
The PTO treated our team to a “Wicked OZ-some” menu of daily goodies, including an Emerald City celebration of pink and green snacks, and a “wicked” yummy lunch from Po’s Rice and Spice. We are so grateful for all that the EHEPTO does to support our staff and students. Next week is Police Appreciation Day! Not only will we take a moment to thank the EHPD for keeping our community safe, but we give special thanks to our resident ASO, Mr. Jerry! He is a valued member of the Memorial School staff.
We are also sending love and thanks to all the moms, mothers-to-be, and surrogate moms this weekend. May you have a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday!
Best,
Joey & Andrea
Safety issue
While we all appreciate the value that animals bring to our lives, we are asking that you leave pets at home, or in your vehicles (weather permitting), when picking up your students in the afternoon. There have been an increased number of animals in the pick-up line, including: dogs, goats, rabbits, and chickens. The animals pose a safety risk to our learners and their families. In addition to allergies and phobias, if one of the pets got loose, it could result in a traffic accident or other injuries. Additionally, not all animals get along with one another. Please help us keep everyone safe by keeping our dismissal zone animal pet free.
It’s Time For iReady Assessments
Each year the East Hampton Public Schools administers the i-Ready Diagnostic in Reading and Math in the fall, winter, and spring for grades 1-3 to monitor student growth and performance. The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning. These results are reviewed as one data point amongst other assessments, observations and data regarding student performance. The assessment is integrated into your child’s day as part of their academic learning and is paced to ensure that they work on the assessment in small chunks of time. Beginning next week, we will administer the final iReady Diagnostics of this school year.

All Children Excercise Simultaneously
On Wednesday, our school community participated in All Children Exercise Simultaneously Day (ACES). ACES takes place annually on the first Wednesday in May. Since 1989, millions of children from all over the world stop on this day to exercise together, in order to promote proper health and fitness habits.
More Field Trips
This week some of our 1st and 2nd grade classes ventured off. Our grade one students went to Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill, and our grade two students went to Palmer Taylor Preserve in Portland. Both trips were full of learning and adventure!
Memorial Models
Memorial Models are chosen weekly by their teacher. These students have excelled all week in taking care of themselves, others, and things. The recipients will dine at a VIP table during lunch every Friday!

PAWSITIVE Office Referrals
A PAWsitive office referral is submitted when a staff member recognizes a student who is going above and beyond to exemplify one of our three school rules - taking care of others, taking care of self, & taking care of things.

Music News
Hello Memorial Families! Please find your student’s grade level below to see what we’ve been up to this month in music class!
Preschool: Students had fun dancing to music and playing the “copycat game” with movements to music!
Kindergarten: – Kindergarten students were expected to make a “perfect match” with their singing voices when singing hello to the teacher. They were also expected to sing correct words and show correct movements as we began work on the music for our Kindergarten Show. Finally, they’ve been identifying long and short sounds in music.
First Grade: This month, students were expected to read patterns made of the notes “sol” and “mi”. Students are also exploring instruments in the percussion family this month. They tried (or will try) an “instrument detective” activity where they identified the best way to play the instrument (hit, shake, scrape).
Second Grade: This month, students identified the dotted half note in the classic springtime song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”. They also practiced reading, writing, and performing the note “re” in various songs and activities. The found out about a musical form called “rondo” during a fun music activity too!
Third Grade: Students are working hard to meet expectations in our recorder program! By the end of our unit (May 16th), students are expected to have earned at least their “green belt” (level 4) in the recorder karate program! Many students have already surpassed this goal, or will meet the goal soon. We have also been learning about instruments in the four families of the orchestra. Students are expected to identify instruments, as well as the family they belong to. Students will soon participate in the Instrument Petting Zoo to explore band instruments as well!
Please check out the music room website for more information about the music program. Feel free to reach out at any time by emailing smaldonado@easthamptonct.org.

Notes From The Nurse
Please let us know if your child is diagnosed with any illness or injury (such as strep, flu, pink eye, fracture/broken bone, lice, pneumonia, covid, etc.) as the nurse office tracks illnesses and sends notification letters home if there are 2 or more cases in a specific classroom. Please be specific with any of the symptoms your child is experiencing.
Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:
Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough
Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)
Mild headache and/or stomachache
Fatigue
Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:
Fever (100.4 degrees or higher. May only return to school after 24 hours of no fever WITHOUT fever reducing medications)
Vomiting (Even once. Must wait 24 hours after last vomit episode to return to school)
Diarrhea (may return to school after 24 hours since last episode)
Chills
General malaise or feelings of fatigue, discomfort, weakness, and/or muscle aches
Frequent congested, wet, or croupy cough
Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose
Please remind your child(ren) about good hygiene habits:
Wash hands frequently
Do not touch eyes, nose, or mouth
Cover mouth and nose when sneezing/coughing and then wash hands
Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Often when a child awakens with vague complaints (the way colds and flu begin) it is wise to observe your child at home for an hour or two before deciding whether or not to bring them to school. Your child should be physically able to participate in all school activities on returning to school. Keeping a sick child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom. Please send in a copy of the doctor’s clearance, as needed. Thank you in advance for helping to make this year at school as healthy as possible.
Medications
Every medication that is brought into school requires a “Medication Authorization” form to be signed by the student’s doctor and parent/guardian and the medication in original packaging with prescription label is to be brought in by a parent/guardian, not in the child’s backpack. No child may carry their own medications at the Elementary level. Please use a large ziplock bag for the medication plus the medication order, and label the bag with your child’s name before dropping off. Any controlled medications will need to be counted and signed off with the RN and parent so please allow for a few extra minutes at drop off.
Please note: COUGH DROPS count as medications and are not allowed in school. All over-the-counter medications also need a medication order from your provider.
Food
We have several students with severe food allergies, therefore we highly recommend non food items to share for birthday celebrations. We ask for at least 48 hours advance notice. A great resource for allergy free snacks is the Safe Snack guide at https://snacksafely.com/safe-snack-guide/

Health Concerns
If your child has a new health concern which you would like to speak to the nurse about e-mail kwilliams@easthamptonct.org and mlemire@easthamptonct.org at any time.
If you have any specific concerns that arise during the school year (such as stitches, concussions, broken bones/fractures, etc) it is best that you send in a doctor’s note with dates, guidelines and restrictions, so we can all be on the same page and keep your child safe.
Phone Numbers/Contact information
Please make sure to update cell phone numbers and make sure mailboxes are not full. We call home and use ParentSquare for notifying parents and it is essential that we are able to contact you in case your child is ill, hurt or needs to be picked up from school or in case of an emergency.
Respectfully,
Katie Williams, RN

Safe School Climate
The East Hampton Board of Education and the school community as a whole promote a secure and productive school climate, conducive to teaching and learning that is free from threat, harassment, and any type of bullying behavior. Therefore it shall be the policy of the Board that bullying and/or teen dating violence committed against a student by another student is prohibited. The Board believes that a school environment in which students feel safe, supported, engaged and helpfully challenged is optimal for learning and healthy development. The Board seeks an environment in which students and adults feel socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically safe; an environment that is free of harassment, intimidation, teen dating violence and bullying. Our website provides links to various policies and reporting forms including our Safe School Climate Plan. Hard copies are also available in our main office. If at any point you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to building administration for further assistance.
Attendance Matters
Please note
When considering the number of absences your student has accrued, keep in mind that a student must be present for 195 minutes in order for the day to count! When bringing your student in late, or signing them out early if they have not been in school for a 195 minutes the day will be recorded as an absence.
