Lunchroom Update
Last year, we launched a school-wide initiative to reduce lunchroom waste. As we continue learning how our choices affect the environment and how we can be better stewards of God’s creation, let’s take a moment to review our progress. In September 2024, our lunchroom garbage totaled 1,205 pounds—all of which went to the landfill. We set a goal to cut that amount in half by the end of the school year. By March 2025, we had already made significant progress, reducing the total to 555 pounds. And by September 2025, we brought it down even further to 307 pounds!
This is incredible progress—but we’re now facing a new challenge: excessive food waste.
Last year, we averaged 8.9 pounds of compostable food waste per day. This year, that number has jumped to 33.36 pounds per day. Clearly, there’s room for improvement.
The lunchroom is one of the easiest places to make a positive impact. Here are a few simple actions you and your family can take:
If your student brings lunch from home, consider using reusable containers so leftovers can be taken back home instead of being thrown away.
If your student buys hot lunch, consider packing a reusable to-go container. Many students have leftovers but no way to store them.
Talk to your student about saying "no" to items they don’t plan to eat. Our food service provider, Maschio’s, offers a variety of options—but students are not required to take everything that is offered.
Return Baby Bottles ASAP
Please return any Gabriel Project baby bottles, even empty ones to the front office.
