Greetings from the Principal
Dear Steele Families,
One of my favorite parts of being a principal is getting into classrooms and seeing learning in action. This week’s newsletter highlights just a few of the many engaging opportunities that are happening all across Steele. From collaborative projects to hands-on exploration, our students are shining in their learning and showing tremendous growth.
This month our Character Strong theme is Respect—seeing value in all people and things and treating them with care. I have been so encouraged to witness countless examples of respect around the building: students encouraging one another, classrooms working as a team, and staff modeling positive interactions.
Respect was also at the center of our VIP Breakfast, which was attended by almost 300 families! It was heartwarming to see so many loved ones gathered in our cafeteria, celebrating the importance of family connections. If you attended, we would greatly appreciate your feedback to help us plan future events. Please take a few moments to complete the short survey linked below this message.
Please mark your calendars for these important upcoming events:
-
📖 Family Reading Night – Wednesday, September 24, 5:30–7:00 PM
-
👩🏫 Parent-Teacher Conferences – Thursday, October 2 (4:00–7:00 PM) & Wednesday, October 8 (4:00–7:00 PM)
-
📅 End of 1st Quarter – Friday, October 10 (1-hour early dismissal)
-
🍂 Fall Break – No School the week of October 13
Thank you for your continued partnership in making Steele a wonderful place for our students to learn and grow. I look forward to seeing many of you at Family Reading Night later this month!
With appreciation,
Mrs. Coate
Principal
Save the Date for Family Reading Night
Letters will come home this week to sign up for parent teacher conferences. Please return that as soon as possible to ensure that we can accommodate your preferences.
Steele Photos
Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate one of our staff members for making a difference!
Do you need to order school pictures?
You can still order online using the code below. Also, our PTO has generously offered to purchase a class photo for every student. Since we no longer produce a yearbook, this is a wonderful way for each child to have a keepsake of their class this year. We are so grateful for the PTO’s continued support of our students.
Picture Retake Day is November 4, 2025.

September's Character Strong Focus - Respect
This month’s focus is Respect. One way to think about Respect is “seeing value in all people and things & treating them with care.” Many people feel Respected in different ways. We hope this month inspires discussions with your family about what Respect means to you and how you can practice it together! PurposeFull Pursuits Respect is 1 of 3 traits we will focus on throughout the year that helps students Be Kind. Across grade levels, students will be developing skills like perspective-taking, conflict resolution, and leadership.
Rooms Messaging App
Please download the Galesburg App. When you receive your invitation email, then you can sign up for messaging. All staff will use this for communication this school year. Once you have the app downloaded, you will see your child's teacher and information in the app.
If you haven't received an email or text, you can reach out to the office to get a code. If you are having trouble connecting, please contact our main office at 309-973-2016
The Shine in #205 program is a way for you to salute any CUSD #205 employee who goes above and beyond what is expected. Whether you are a parent/guardian impressed with that special touch your student's teacher added to a moment, a coworker who thinks their colleague doesn't hear often enough about the great job they are doing, or a community member who witnessed a staff member's commitment to students-you can submit a Shine nomination!
PTO Meeting Dates
All meetings are held at Steele in the library. Meetings run from 5:30 - 6:30 PM and are on the first Tuesday of the month.
A Google Meet will be set up for those of you that want to attend but cannot be in person.
