Message from Dr. Dennis Best, Superintendent of Schools

Celebrating Our School Board Directors: Champions of Public Education

This January, Lower Moreland Township School District proudly celebrates School Director Recognition Month by honoring the nine dedicated individuals who serve on our Board of School Directors. These community leaders volunteer their time and expertise to shape the future of our district's educational landscape.

Our school board directors dedicate an average of 10 hours each month to critical decisions about budgets, policies, and comprehensive planning that directly impact our students' educational experience. Their commitment goes far beyond monthly meetings. They are genuinely invested in fostering innovation and creating brighter futures for our schools and students.

What makes their service especially meaningful is their deep connection to our community. Many board directors are parents of current or former district students, and some even attended Lower Moreland schools themselves. They are our neighbors, colleagues, and friends who have chosen to give back to our community through this vital form of public service.

As we recognize that 90% of American students attend public schools, we understand our school board's vital role in maintaining and improving the high-quality education crucial for our children's success. They are essential members of our educational team, working alongside teachers, administrators, staff, parents, and community members to ensure our schools thrive.

This month, we invite you to join us in thanking our school board directors for their unwavering dedication to public education. Their volunteer service strengthens not just our schools but our entire community. Let's show our appreciation for these public servants who work tirelessly to help our students and schools succeed.

Student Representatives to the Board of School Directors

Hello, Lower Moreland Community! We, the Student Representatives for the 2024-2025 school year, [Mia Dubin and Edona Selamaj], are excited to share with you the latest updates regarding the school climate at Pine Road, Murray Avenue, Lower Moreland Middle School, and Lower Moreland High School as we welcome in the New Year!

To begin, at Pine Road, students and staff celebrated the holiday season! Each classroom hosted a variety of holiday parties where everyone came together to enjoy delicious treats, play games, and share in the joy of the season. The classrooms were filled with festive decorations, making it a special time for students to bond with friends and teachers!

Meanwhile, at Murray Avenue, the PTA surprised the faculty by hosting their annual cookie trays to show appreciation for the teachers and staff. According to Mr. Stroup, Murray Avenue’s principal, “Murray Avenue School had a fun week heading into the winter break, filled with themed dress-up days, classroom parties, grade-level celebrations, and celebrations for teachers. A special thank you to our PTA and all homeroom parents for helping make this week such a memorable experience for all students and staff!”

At the Middle School, students who participated in the LionVoice had the exciting opportunity to perform at the 76ers Game! This was an incredible experience, and it is wonderful that our school offers such opportunities for our future singers!

Lastly, at the High School, students and staff welcomed Philadelphia Eagles’ Nakobe Dean! It was an honor to have Nakobe visit our school, which was filled with white and green. Nakobe spoke with student leaders, the engineering class, and, of course, the football team. His presence was truly a gift, and it was a delight to have him in our school hallways! Go Birds!

Business Office (Mark McGuinn, Business Manager)

In accordance with Pennsylvania School Code, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CPA firm must annually audit the district. The district pays for this audit. The audit is an examination of the districts’ financial statements by an independent, external person(s) to ascertain whether or not the district-prepared financial statements fairly represent in material (significant) respects its financial position and operations. The auditor offers an opinion on this matter.

The audit for the 2023/24 school year was completed by the audit firm, Maillie LLP., which specializes in school district auditing. The 2023/24 audit was presented at the December 2024 Work Session Meeting for the Board of School Directors to review and then the Board voted to accept the report at its’ Regular December 2024 Board meeting. Because the District collected in excess of $750,000, another audit review called a single audit was triggered and was also included with the regular audit report for the 2023/24 school year. The current audit, as well as many previous audits, can be found here.

Curriculum and Community Engagement (Dr. Julie Henrich, Assistant Superintendent/Scott Cole, Director )

Science teachers attended a multi-day professional learning session at the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit this fall with Brett Moulding, an author of the Next Generation Science Standards. One focus of this session was on supporting students as they construct explanations, which is an expectation found in the PA STEELS standards.

Fourth Grade Teacher, Meg Smith, co-planned with an Instructional Coach to apply this in a fourth-grade lesson on electricity. Students developed a model of their working circuit after they investigated various conductors and insulators. After communicating with one another about their models and gathering information through reading, students constructed scientific explanations about energy transfer in a circuit.

Technology (Jason Hilt, Ed.D., Director)

The Technology Department supports information technology systems and instructional technology programs and practices in the district. Each month, we highlight how our students and teachers engage in 21st Century learning activities. We also share updates on new initiatives and tips and tricks related to devices and technology tools used in the district.

In today's connected world, digital literacy is more important than ever. Throughout the year, the district focuses on helping students develop strong digital citizenship skills, including online safety, responsible technology use, and critical thinking when consuming information online. In 2025, our students will continue to utilize tools like Google Workspace for Education, Google Classroom, Canvas, and their district-provided Chromebooks to collaborate, create, and learn both in and out of the classroom. We encourage families to have open conversations with their students about their online activities and learning apps. Explore the helpful resources available on our district website, including the parent/guardian resource center, and links to school-specific resources. Together we can ensure a positive and productive digital experience for everyone!

Special Education/Student Services (Frank Giordano, Director)

This year the Lower Moreland Township School District will once again be operating an in-district Extended School Year program. As always, the IEP team for each child will make a determination as to his/her need for Extended School Year based upon a variety of factors including regression and recoupment of IEP goals. Revisions to IEPs will be made as necessary. The program will run from July 7th to August 7th, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM and will operate at all three school buildings. More details will be forthcoming as we calculate our final numbers of students who are eligible and will be attending. All parents of eligible students will receive a letter from the Student Services Office, after February, with additional information.
