UPDATES UPDATES

Today was certainly an unusual day at Rockland High School. We lost power early in the morning and had to cancel our planned safety drill. The building operated on generator power, which resulted in inconsistent lighting throughout the day.

The circumstances required adjustments across the school. The front office managed a high volume of phone calls, teachers modified lessons without access to technology, and the cafeteria staff prepared and served lunch before hand-washing all dishes.

It was a good reminder for students that unexpected challenges arise, and being able to adjust is an important skill for all of us.

Some great things happened over the past week:

SEMSBA

Rockland High School is proud to recognize the following students for their outstanding musical achievement:

  • Camryn Aifa
  • Isa Cara
  • Lila Colburn
  • Talia Costa
  • Tallis Costa
  • Jayda Fernandes
  • Christy George
  • Lilly George
  • Gabriella Lynch
  • Aleah Meade
  • Joseph Petrosevich
  • Patsy Puopolo
  • Ben Quinn
  • Evie Reynolds
  • Sarah Tedeschi

These students successfully auditioned for the SEMSBA Honor Choir and represented Rockland at the annual SEMSBA Music Festival this past weekend at Plymouth Memorial Hall, where they joined top student musicians from across southeastern Massachusetts. After participating in an intensive rehearsal process, the festival culminated in a final concert performance that showcased their talent, hard work, and dedication. We are incredibly proud of these students for representing Rockland High School with excellence and professionalism. Go Bulldogs!

Seal of Biliteracy

On Tuesday, 28 students in grades 11 and 12 took the Seal of Biliteracy exam. Students who demonstrated proficiency in English on the MCAS ELA exam were eligible to demonstrate proficiency in a second language by taking the exam. We had students take the exam in a variety of languages, including Arabic, French, Greek, Portuguese, and Spanish.

South Shore League Scholar-Athlete Awards

On Wednesday evening, two Rockland High School students were honored as South Shore League Scholar-Athletes at an awards banquet in Plymouth. Please join me in congratulating Harrison Holbrook and Molly Lucas, both three-season athletes who rank among the top of their class. They were joined by their families for this special recognition.

GRADE 12

Seniors attended an assembly on Thursday about local scholarships. The presentation, also in Seniors' Guidance Google classroom, can be found here. Everything students need for local scholarships can be found in the presentation, so please read through it carefully! There are two scholarship lists, each with their own application. Instructions are listed at the top of each list - read them carefully! 4 additional scholarships require their own application - this is all detailed in the presentation.

For scholarships on the General Scholarship list, students only need to complete and submit one application to be considered for every scholarship.

For scholarships on the Outside Scholarship list, students must submit an application for EACH scholarship they are applying for. Some require additional materials; read the instructions for the scholarship carefully as incomplete applications will not be considered.

Students CANNOT submit applications electronically. Completed applications must be printed and brought to Guidance. Students can print applications in the Library on help days - details on help days are in the presentation and can be found here.

THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT COMPLETED SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS TO GUIDANCE IS 3:00 PM on THURSDAY, April 9th. There are NO exceptions to this deadline.

Use your time over the next few weeks to apply for every scholarship you are eligible for - every dollar counts!

If you have questions about scholarships, please refer them to Mrs. Carla Dunn in Guidance (cdunn@rocklandschools.org) or (781) 871-8410.

FROM THE NURSE FROM THE NURSE

Spring athletics kicked off this week at school and all of us are itching to spend more time outside as the weather gets warmer. Here are a few tips to stay safe and healthy as you increase your activity.

Remember SPRING

Start slowly & stretch: Gradually work up to your previous activity levels. Stretching after exercise helps to prevent muscle and joint pain and damage.

Proper hydration: The average person needs about 96 oz or more water daily. Hot weather and increased activity means more water loss through sweating and breathing. So increase your water intake to balance that. Most of your fluid should come through water, not sports drinks, energy drinks or soda.

Rest: Make sure you are getting plenty of rest to balance academics, sports, and other activities.

Include a warm-up and cool-down as part of your training: Longer warm-ups increase blood flow to muscles and joints, reducing the risk of injury as you begin your spring routine.

Nutrition: Eating healthy whole foods with a balance of protein, carbs and fats is essential to helping your body perform.

Give yourself some down time: Mix-up your routine with cross training and recovery time.
