Amy Biehl Community School Parent Guide: Attendance Tiers & Support

Every day matters. When students miss school, they miss learning, friendships, routines, and important support.

Our goal is to partner with families early and provide help before absences become a barrier.

What counts as being absent? A student is considered absent if they miss school for any reason (excused or unexcused). Absences add up quickly, missing just 2 days per month can put a child at risk of falling behind.

We have an Attendance Team dedicated to supporting students, parents, and teachers with any attendance concerns. Our team includes our principal, secretary, nurse, community school coordinator, counselor, and interventionist. Each team member supports specific grade levels.

If your child has been absent, there is a good chance that one of us has already reached out to you. Please know that we are here to help. If your family is experiencing challenges with attendance, we encourage you to reach out. Support is available, and we want to work together to ensure your child’s success.

Below are the SFPS Distirct Attendance Tiers

TIER I: Whole School Prevention

Less than 5% missed learning time

• Attendance is accurately marked in PowerSchool.

• Attendance information and brochures are available for families.

• Families may request support at any time.

TIER II: Individualized Prevention

5–9% missed learning time

• After 3 absences: parent/guardian contacted (phone, email, or message platform).

• Initial assessment of needs/barriers completed and support offered.

• After 5 absences: additional contact and referral to School Attendance Team as needed.

TIER III: Early Intervention

10–19% missed learning time

• Principal/designee notified at approximately 5–7 absences.

• Attendance concerns reviewed by School Attendance Team.

• Parent conference requested; barriers assessed and supports offered.

• Attendance Contract may be used; A2A letters sent (not suppressed).

• District Attendance Team support may be requested around 15 absences/semester.

TIER IV: Intensive Support

20% or more missed learning time

• Excessively absent thresholds: 18 days (Q2), 27 days (Q3), 36 days (Q4).

• Referral may be made to CYFD CPS or Juvenile Probation Office (JPO) per guidance.

• CYFD has 15 academic days to attempt re-engagement prior to withdrawal consideration.
