Parent Drop-off and Pick-up Information
IMPORTANT Reminders for Parent Drop-off and Pick-up Traffic
In an effort to alleviate traffic jams around the campus the constable has recommended coning off left-hand turns coming from the west. Everyone who travels from the west on Fry Road will need to proceed through the intersection at Fry and Lake Crossing to the intersection at Fry and Grand Trace Lane to make a U-turn and then make a right on Lake Crossing for Pre-K and SPED drop-offs and pick-ups, OR make a right into the front drive for K-5 drop-offs or pick-ups. DO NOT make a U-turn where the crossing guard, Mrs. Melissa Sevilla, is attempting to safely cross children from Avalon. This adds confusion and congestion and puts children at risk. Approach Griffin Elementary from the east when possible to avoid the need for a U-turn. Remember the 20 mph speed limit, buckle up your children and abide by all traffic rules. Keep our children safe.
When dropping off your child in the morning carpool line, please adhere to the one lane rule. When two lanes form and the outer lane drops off their child it is a safety hazard.
STEPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL PARENT PICK-UP:
- When exiting the building, your child should be seated under their car rider section.
- Students should know their car rider 3-digit number (located on their backback).
- Please help them memorize their number at home.
- Students should listen for their number and go to the cone that is called for them.
- Example: Number 238 go to cone 2.
- When you arrive at the designated lane, your child should be there waiting.

Gifted and Talented Program
What is the Gifted and Talented Program?
GT (Gifted and Talented) is a program that serves students who have high achievement capability, are quick learners and need an instructional challenge. These students are usually very curious, think "outside the box" and love to learn. In Katy ISD, students identified for the Gifted and Talented program get pulled out for one full day a week to the Challenge classroom.

Counselor's Corner
My name is Laura Bannerman and I am Griffin Elementaryโs School Counselor. The school guidance and counseling program at Griffin will provide services to all students so that they will have a successful school experience and develop their full academic, social, emotional, personal, and career potential. In September, I will be doing a guidance lesson with every class discussing my role as the school counselor and teaching our Griffin Grizzlies conflict resolution.
You can learn more about my role here and how to contact me: Counselor Brochure
GUIDANCE LESSONS
This past week students in grades K-5 received a guidance lesson from the counselor, Ms. Bannerman. Kindergarten and 1st grade students learned the difference between a big problem and a small problem. A small problem students solve such as someone is bothering them. A big problem is for adults to solve. An example of a big problem is that someone is hurt. If someone is hurt, we go to a trusted adult and let them know. 2nd grade-5th grade reviewed the conflict resolution wheel (See image below) and practiced solving small problems. They learned that if they try two ways and the problem still exists, then they need to report it to an adult to get help solving the problem. 5th graders actually did a CONFLICT RESOLUTION Escape Room to review ways to solve a conflict! We had a great week of guidance lessons! The next guidance lesson topic for October will be Bullying Prevention.
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month
SEPTEMBER is Childhood Cancer Awareness month. We would like to recognize our Griffin Grizzlies who are fighting cancer or who have survived cancer on our school announcements. If your child is in one of these categories, we would love for you to print this form and fill it out for your child to participate: Childhood Cancer Awareness Day Please return it to Ms. Bannerman, School Counselor.
September Character Trait: RESPECT
Our Character trait for the month of September is RESPECT. Here is a poster that was shared with students on announcements and with the counselor lesson with Ms. Bannerman on practical ways to show respect. Every month, we will learn practical ways to show our character trait.

Parents may opt their child in for instruction by logging in to MyKaty and selecting the KISD Option Portal icon. Visit the Katy Option Portal Help Guide for Parents for assistance navigating the portal.

Safety First!
Campus Safety
One of Katy Independent School District's top priorities is the safety and well-being of our students, staff, parents and community members, who visit our campuses and facilities. Katy ISD and Griffin Elementary have implemented campus safety and security measures which include:
Parent and Visitor Identification (ID) Requirement: All parents and visitors must now present a valid, current, government-issued picture ID outside of the main entrance at all Katy ISD campuses prior to gaining admittance. Each campus is equipped with a controlled access system that includes a camera and an intercom that parents and visitors will need to utilize when presenting their ID for entrance. To gain further access beyond the campus front lobby, individuals will again be required to present their ID to the front desk receptionist in order to be officially logged into the visitor tracking system.
Thank you for keeping MGE safe!
Technology Help
If you need help with technology please click on the link below for more information.
Student Use of Personal Devices
New Texas state law (House Bill 1481) requires all public school districts to restrict student use of personal communication devices during the instructional day. These devices include cell phones, smartwatches, wireless earbuds and similar technology. All personal communication devices must remain turned off and out of sight from the first bell to dismissal.
While students may still bring personal communication devices to campus, use during the instructional day is strictly prohibited. Any device that is visible or in use during instructional hours will be considered a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and may result in disciplinary action.
If your child has a documented health or learning need that requires access to a personal communication device, please contact your campus administration to discuss appropriate accommodations. Exceptions will only be made for emergency situations or students with verified support needs as part of an approved learning or medical plan.

Doctor notes for absences and/or partial day healthcare appointments may be submitted upon your child's return. If an absence does not meet the criteria for an excused absence or one of the extenuating circumstances specified in Board policy, the absence will be considered unexcused for attendance account purposes.

Volunteer Information
Volunteer Registration
Katy ISD is grateful for the thousands of volunteers who make a difference in our schools each year. To help maintain a safe and secure environment for our students and staff, all volunteers serving on or off campus during or outside the instructional day are required to register annually through the district's Raptor volunteer management system.
A valid government-issued photo ID and email address are required to complete registration.
Your information will remain confidential and will not be shared outside of the volunteer program, except for applicants who register as a Community Volunteer (not a parent, grandparent, or guardian of a current Katy ISD student) or as a KEYS Mentor. For these volunteer roles, the information required to complete a background check will be shared only with our authorized background screening provider, JDP.
Once registered and approved, volunteers can:
โข Sign up as a campus volunteer by completing the volunteer recruitment form provided by their campus organization(s) or by contacting the campus volunteer coordinator
โข Track volunteer hours through their volunteer profile for every Katy ISD campus where they serve.
โข Quickly and easily submit individual off-campus volunteer hours.
Teachers and Katy ISD Employees:
Staff members who also volunteer are reminded to complete this yearโs Raptor Volunteer Registration using a personal email address. When you volunteer at your home campus or any other Katy ISD campus, youโre an important member of our Katy ISD volunteer family and your hours count too! Submitting volunteer hours helps us paint an accurate, numeric picture of how much our community supports our schools while showcasing volunteer impact in Katy ISD.
On-campus, school-day volunteer hours are automatically collected by the Raptor system if you check in via the front office when volunteering. You may also sign-in anytime to your Katy ISD Volunteer Profile to log both on and off-campus hours and to manage your Katy ISD Volunteer Account.
