Wolverine Pride
The Wiscasset Middle High School Newsletter
Principal's Welcome!
August 14, 2026
Dear WMHS Community,
I hope you’re all enjoying these final weeks of summer vacation, and I’d like to welcome you to the first edition of The Wolverine Pride, our new school newsletter! As your new principal, I’m looking forward to reaching out to you regularly with important information, updates, and celebrations, and I welcome your feedback! A few things about the Wolverine Pride that will be helpful to know:
We aim to make the newsletter “phone friendly.” In fact, I aim to be able to text you a link for it as early as next week.
We want to be sensitive to not overloading you with too much information at once. We will send a newsletter at least once every two weeks, and it will go out on Thursdays beginning next week.
We want to make sure that information is organized in a way that is helpful for both middle school and high school families so that you can find and read the information you need easily.
For this week, we’re keeping things really simple! Next week, we’ll be ready to share more details about the new schoolwide cell phone ban (please see below!), our Open House on August 27, and the opening week of school.
In the meantime, I welcome you to stop by WMHS to check in. I can’t wait to get started and get to work with your students! Enjoy this beautiful weather - if you plan on attending the Set for Success event this Sunday, I’ll see you there!
Chris

Family/Student Handbooks and Student Schedules
We are in the process of revamping and updating our family/student handbook, and I am excited to report that we will have separate handbooks for our middle school and our high school by the first day of school! This will be a great step in helping us clearly communicate with families to get them the information they need.
If you haven't received your student's schedule yet, you will have through email by early next week. Many thanks to School Counselor Stephanie French and Admin Assistant Sandy Aloisio for their hard work getting our students' schedules completed!
We are aiming to have most communications come to you electronically going forward. However, if you'd prefer to get physical copies of anything in the mail, please let us know and we will get them to you. Hard copies will also always be available in our front office.
"Bell to Bell" School Cell Phone Ban
As you know, the state of Maine passed a law this spring that will require all public schools to restrict student use of cell phones and smart devices during the school day beginning August 1, 2026; therefore, as part of our ongoing commitment to creating safe, respectful, and focused learning environments, all Wiscasset schools will move to cell phone-free school days starting on the first day of school for the 2026–2027 school year.
This means that from arrival to dismissal, bell-to-bell, students will be expected to keep personal electronic devices silenced, out of sight, and unused throughout the school day.
By limiting access to digital distractions, we are supporting:
Improved academic focus and engagement
Positive peer interactions and school connectedness
Challenging Social Issues
A more respectful, distraction-free environment for teaching and learning
This is more than a change in practice—it is a step to promote stronger learning, deeper relationships, and healthier school climates for every student, in every building.
What Devices Are Included?
The practice applies to the following non-school issued personal electronic devices:
Cell phones, including basic phones that call or text
Internet-connected devices, such as tablets or handheld gaming consoles
Smartwatches that can access the internet
AirPods, earbuds, Bluetooth headphones, and other listening devices
These items must be silenced and remain out of sight and unused during the entire school day—including during class transitions, meals, restroom breaks, and assemblies.
Medical Exceptions
We understand that some students require access to electronic monitoring devices for health-related conditions. Exceptions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and must be supported by documentation from a licensed medical professional. Any exception granted will be specific to the student’s medical need and does not allow for general use of the device.
Headphones and Listening Devices
Headphones, earbuds, and similar devices are not permitted during the school day unless explicitly allowed by a staff member for instructional use. This is to ensure that students are fully engaged in the classroom environment. Likewise, the use of cameras or recording functions on any device is prohibited without prior permission.
Communication During the Day
We know it is important for families to stay connected. If a student or caregiver needs to get in touch during the school day, phones are available in our main office, and staff are always ready to assist.
Cell Phone Violation Practices and Procedures
We are in the process of developing clear practices for addressing violations of the cell phone ban that will be ready to share by Open House on the 27th and the start of the year.
Regardless of the new law coming into effect across Maine, this change at the start of the school year reflects the best of what we want for our WMHS students: stronger focus, greater connection, and learning environments rooted in respect and care. We are proud to take this critical step as a unified school community along with all school districts across Maine. We are grateful for your partnership in making it successful!
Thanks to Our Custodians and Painting Crew!
Our staff and kids will be happy to see how WMHS looks when they come back in a few weeks! Many thanks to Head Custodian Dan Lincoln and his team along with our stellar painting crew, Katie Ruzyckij and Wendy Tarrance, for their excellent work. I'd also like to thank Admin Assistant Beth Bluteau for her creative and fun updating of our bulletin boards. I've experienced many school openings over the years, and I have never seen a school that looks this clean, shiny, colorful, and well organized in mid August. Thanks to the whole team!
