Fall Activities and Traditions
A note from Superintendent Deborah Rumbaugh
As we turn the page to October, I’m reminded of how quickly the seasons shift, summer now behind us and fall settling in with its crisp mornings and vibrant colors. This season presents us with the opportunity to pause, connect, and celebrate together.
I’m excited for all the upcoming events and traditions that make this time of year so meaningful for our students, families, and staff. Thank you for the energy and heart you bring into our schools every day.
While out in schools this week
I’ve been so moved seeing orange shirts across our schools this week. Each one is a thoughtful and meaningful remembrance — honoring culture, acknowledging the past, and carrying forward hope for a better future for all.
September 30th is recognized in the U.S. as a National Day of Remembrance for Indian Boarding Schools. In 2021, the Department of the Interior began commemorating this day in alignment with the Orange Shirt Day movement, which originated in Canada. Both observances honor the legacy of Indian boarding schools and the strength of survivors, their families, and communities.
I’m especially grateful to our students, whose thoughtfulness and leadership remind us what it means to learn, grow, and walk this journey together.
Deborah Rumbaugh, Ed.D.
Superintendent, Interim

Shout out to MSD’s Coaches!
To our hardworking coaches and activities staff: thank you for the leadership and passion you put into supporting our students both as scholars and athletes.
Athletics and activities bring immense meaning to students and families; they help build culture, foster connection, and generate positive energy in our schools. Games, matches, meets – they're all places to witness school pride and spirit in action.
Since many coaching positions are funded through local levies, we’re especially grateful for our community’s support in making these opportunities possible for our young people.

Speaking of events: Come to Legacy High School's first Fall Festival this month 🍂
Everyone's invited and entry is free! Organized by Legacy High School ASB and Leadership students, this community celebration will feature 35+ vendors showcasing the talents of local artists, crafters, quilters, woodworkers, and small businesses. Enjoy live music, grab a bite from some food trucks, and get your face painted! We think it's the perfect way to support local creativity, connect with the community, and enjoy a day of fun, food, and entertainment. Don’t miss it!

⭐The Tony Perkins Legacy Fund 💕
Honoring his legacy of inspiration, enrichment and compassion 🙏
Tony Perkins dedicated his heart and soul to the students of the Marysville School District. He worked for the district for many years; first as a custodian and then as a Special Education teacher after obtaining his teaching certificate. Sadly, Tony passed away about a year ago, just a few months after he retired.
To honor his memory, Tony’s wife, Tess, donated to the district’s Developmental Learning Program, making possible some of the activities and opportunities that he loved to provide for his students. That donation has since been named The Tony Perkins Legacy Fund.
This legacy fund was used for the first time last month to provide transportation for our DLP students to visit the Woodland Park Zoo – just the kind of thing that Tony would be excited about! The fund will be used again later this month to support transportation and admission for DLP students to visit Swan Trails Farm.
To the Perkins family: Our hearts are full of gratitude for your generosity and commitment to continuing the work that meant so much to Tony, and of course to all of us. Thank you. 💙
