Tidbits from the President
In Texas, October means the beginning of fall… eventually. I seem to be suffering from a case of the ‘scatters’. I’m trying to make a replacement quilt for my bed. I picked an easy pattern with large pieces. It shouldn’t take that long! I get started, then something else jumps to the top of the ‘to do’ list. Laundry, groceries, grandkids, a customer quilt, new tires, this newsletter input. I’m sure no one else has this problem. And I’ve been looking at some of Debbie Miles’ unfinished kits. She was brilliantly organized and had so much great stuff. Sue, who is chairman for the Debbie/Janie Legacy Committee, said Debbie had so much stuff, that she was driven to finish some of her UFOs. Over the next several (many more) months, you will be hearing about all the plans for Debbie and Janie’s things. There will be some orphan blocks on the free table at this month’s meeting. Look for more info in the ‘programs’ section. See ya on Tuesday.
Program this Month
October Program
October brings Becky Goldsmith owner of Piece O’Cake shop. She will give a program titled “Quilting on a Quilt- The Secret Lives of Thread & Needles”.
We will also have a selection of items on the Free table that were given to the guild by Debbie Miles's family.
Upcoming Programs
November will be our Annual Quilt of Valor presentation. We will be giiving Quilts to some distinguished service personnel. It’s always a beautiful ceremony and you will enjoy the opportunity to share and learn about their experiences.
December seems far away, but our Annual Christmas party and potluck is always a great fun time for all—lots to look forward to and more news to come. Look forward to upcoming announcements of items that will be gifted at this festive gathering.

Membership
With a new year starting, it is time to renew your membership for a new year
NTQF 2025
The theme for NTQF 2025 is “There’s No Place Like Home”. So you can start working on your ‘theme’ quilt.
Molly Risewick has volunteered to be FWQG show rep next year.
Raffle Quilt
COMING SOON !!!!!
The raffle quilt ‘season’ is drawing to an end. The drawing is at the November meeting. Keep selling those tickets. Remember to mention that our quilt won Honorable Mention Ribbon at the NTQF 2024. Get more from Shelley at the membership desk or return (if necessary).
PLEASE CONSIDER !!!
We also need members to volunteer to take the quilt somewhere and sell tickets. This can be another guild, a shop, a retreat. Anywhere you are willing to go. No one wants to do this alone but one meeting: one day, maybe with a friend???? Is there another guild you are a member of? Is there a guild you have wanted to visit? This is the way. Ask one of the board members if you don’t know how to contact someone to visit.
Thank you so much to Shelley Clauss who has agreed to handle the logistics for the quilt. Contact Shelley if you would like to take the quilt somewhere and sell tickets.

BEES
EMBROIDERY BEE
We have set our meeting time to 2 pm on the last Thursday of the month.
We continue to rotate our meeting site. New members are welcome.
This month, we will share items featuring pumpkins.
Contact Wanda Edmunds or Sarah Tutt for more information.
FRAYED KNOTS
We met on November 8 and enjoyed a time for food, fellowship, and seeing what other group members are working on.
TIGHT KNOTS --
Tight Knots Bee -- August
Our August meeting was hosted by Cheri Bigham. We discussed the closing of Patty's Last Resort and how it affected our annual retreat. The group then talked about other locations and assigned members to get information about them. Next was Show and Tell. Chris Tomich showed a wheelchair quilt made from 2x3 strips. Cecilia Villa had a baby quilt she is working on. She is doing a round robin quilt until it is 36" for NICU. She also showed a dog quilt, a kid's quilt, and a Quilt of Valor she quilted. Judi Janes' ladybug quilt for a baby was so cute. Pat Wagers brought many kaleidoscope blocks she had in her orphan block stash. She made two table runners, a table topper, and two quilts. That is some serious kaleidoscope blocks. Go Pat Wagers. Margo Grunseich shared a NICU quilt of fun colors. She also presented a quilt she has made for her son as a gift when gets his PHD this summer. He is receiving his PHD from A&M in Entomology. Of course, the quilt is covered in bugs. Cheri Bingham has made many Bonnie Hunter quilts and says she is sizing them down now. She made a lovely baby quilt. We enjoyed a wonderful strawberry cake bar. You were able to add your own special toppings. YUM! Then a quick game of LRC, where Chris Tomich took home some beautiful Black/Bright fat quarters.
Start a BEE
One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!
General Guidelines
- Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
- A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
- Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
- Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
- Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.
Retreat 2025
Shelley has already begun to take reservations for the 2025 retreat, which will be April 3-6, 2025.
Bev Ramsey Fund
Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, a teacher and a friend. We lost her way too early. The Bev Ramsey fund was set up to help those in need enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.
Quilts of Valor
Fifteen veterans received Quilts of Valor in September. Six of them were wrapped in the ceremony held at Hollis Threads on Sunday September 22nd. Jennifer and Shari Hollis are so generous to open their shop for our QOV ceremonies. We appreciate them so much!
The other awards were smaller but just as meaningful to the recipients and those in attendance.
We assembled fifteen star blocks at the sew day on Oct. 1st at the American Legion. We would like to have a better turnout at the next sew day, so we will be asking for suggestions on preferred days of the week to hold our next one. For anyone wondering, this is a non-smoking facility and easy to get to. We appreciate Laurel Grannan for helping to get it set up.
I will bring a couple of the kits I prepared to the next meeting.

Lovies
If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.
Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Cook Children's. Cook's is always very grateful for the gifts.
JPS NICU Quilts (and Cancer Care Center items)
NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) Quilts
One of our community service projects is making NICU quilts for John Peter Smith Hospital. NICU quilts are 36” x 36” prewashed cotton quilts. These are placed on the incubators in the intensive care unit and become the property of the baby/baby’s family. As some of you may know, the Tight Knots Quilt Bee makes NICU quilts each year as one of their community service projects. Maybe your bee would consider doing the same.
JPS has also requested other items for their patients:
Baby Items:
Receiving blankets and baby quilts – of all sizes
Layettes and Isolettes no smaller than 52”x56”
Cozy Cub Slipcover (tubular coverlet) See the link below for a sample of this item. 40 inches long
9 inches – circumference for small
11 inches – circumference for large
CozyCub–Dandle.LionMedical www.dandlelionmedical.com
Adult Items:

Help your Newsletter Editors !!!
After working with Smore for a while, we have run into limitations of the formatting available to us. It is easiest if the information is sent either as text, JPG, or PNG pictures. We can attach PDF documents to the newsletter, but they will appear as links and the reader must download them to their device to read them (easier if done from a laptop/desktop). DOC files that contain text only will be copied into the newsletter, but some of the formatting may be lost.
ALSO, WE NEED PICTURES!
If you are unable to bring your project to the meeting for Show and Share, send a picture to the guild address - with subject - Newsletter show n share. We can include a brief description
