Principal's Desk
Dear CMIT South Families, Community Partners, and Scholars,
What a way to kick off the year! To our families — thank you for getting your scholars to school ready to learn. To our community partners — thank you for cheering us on from day one. And to our scholars — you should be proud of yourselves for such a strong start. As we head into week two, let's keep that same energy going!
Our Character Word of the Month for August is Respectfulness, and it's worth carrying with us as we settle into our routines:

🚌 Transportation & Carline Information 🚗
As a public charter school, CMIT South Elementary does not provide school bus transportation. However, we maintain a list of independent vendors. Please click on the following link, Van Transportation Partners, which many of our current families use for morning and/or afternoon transportation. You are welcome to contact these providers directly to inquire about availability and pricing.
Please note the following:
Student drop-off begins at 7:35 AM when adult supervision is present. Please do not leave your child if there is no adult present.
The gate closes promptly at 8:00 AM.
School starts at 8:00 AM.
If you arrive after 8:00 AM, you have a 5-minute grace period to drop your child off at the front of the building.
Your scholar is considered tardy after 8:05 AM. You must park, escort them into the building, and sign them in using our front office iPad.
Dismissal begins at 2:30 PM, with van riders first, followed by car riders through our KVS pick-up system.
Scholars enrolled in Enrichment will be dismissed to their assigned rooms at 2:45 PM.
If you need to pick up your scholar early, the deadline is 1:30 PM. This allows our staff to wrap up instruction and prepare for end-of-day routines. Please notify your child’s teacher in advance, but know that students will not be called to the office until you arrive.
💻 Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) 💻
Due to current budget constraints, CMIT South Elementary will implement a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy.
What this means:
All students will need to bring their own Chromebook for use both at school and at home
We will no longer be able to provide school-issued devices for every student as we have in previous years
A limited number of devices will be available to rent for $100 per school year
Rental fees may be waived for families with documented financial need
We understand this represents a change from our previous practice, and we're committed to supporting families through this transition. Please click on the following link for detailed information about device specifications, rental options, and financial assistance programs: [Device Information Link] and Chromebook Rental Application
📝 Attendance Matters 📝
Administrative Procedure 5113, Student Attendance, Absence, and Truancy

Counselor's Corner
Dear CMIT South Elementary Tiger Families,
Welcome to a new school year! My name is Deidra Chandler, and I am excited to serve as the School Counselor at CMIT South Elementary. I look forward to partnering with you to help make this an amazing year for all of our Tigers!
As the school counselor, I support students' academic, social-emotional, and career development through classroom guidance lessons, individual counseling, and small group counseling. Whether we're learning how to solve problems, manage big emotions, build friendships, or set goals, my mission is to help every student feel safe, supported, and confident both inside and outside the classroom.
I am also excited to welcome Mr. Paul, our new in-house Mental Health Clinician, who will be joining our counseling team this school year. Mr. Paul will work alongside our counseling team to provide additional mental health and social-emotional support to our students and families. We are thrilled to have him as part of our team, and more information about his role and services will be shared soon!
I believe the best way to help our students succeed is by working together. When families and school staff partner as a team, students are empowered to do their very best. If you ever have questions or concerns about your child's academic progress, social skills, behavior, or emotional well-being, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm here to help!
I can't wait to get to know our students and families as we learn, grow, and ROAR through another wonderful school year together!

Building Strong Readers Together!
Welcome back, families! I am excited to begin a new school year filled with opportunities for our students to learn, grow, and develop a love for reading. As your Reading Specialist, I look forward to partnering with families and teachers to help every child become a confident and successful reader.
As we begin the year, there are many simple ways you can support your child’s reading journey at home:
- Read together every day — Set aside 15–20 minutes for reading, whether your child reads independently, listens to you read, or takes turns reading.
- Talk about books — Ask questions such as, “What happened in the story?” “What was your favorite part?” or “Why do you think the character did that?”
- Practice foundational skills — Review letter sounds, sight words, phonics patterns, and word reading in fun, low-pressure ways.
- Encourage writing — Have your child write about a book, keep a journal, make a grocery list, or write a note to a family member.
- Create a reading-friendly home — Keep books in a place where your child can easily access and enjoy them.
- Celebrate effort and progress — Encourage your child and remind them that becoming a strong reader takes practice.
Most importantly, make reading enjoyable! Your encouragement and enthusiasm can help your child develop confidence and a lifelong love of learning.
Here’s to a wonderful school year filled with great books, growing readers, and exciting discoveries!

Grade Level Blurb:
Dear First Grade Families,
We are excited to welcome you to another wonderful week of learning! This week marks the beginning of our first grade curriculum, and we are looking forward to diving into new skills, exciting lessons, and meaningful learning experiences with our scholars.
📌 Important Reminders:
🎒 All About Me Bag: Due Friday, September 4th. We can’t wait for our scholars to share a little more about themselves with the class!
🔤 Spelling Bingo: This will be sent home tomorrow. Please remember that spelling follows a 7-day cycle, so students will have the full cycle to practice and complete their activities. Spelling homework will be due next Wednesday, September 9th.
➕ Math Homework: A math packet will also be sent home tomorrow. Math homework should be completed daily as we complete lessons in class. This will give students an opportunity to practice and reinforce the skills they are learning each day. Because math homework is given by the unit, students have a little more time to complete! Be sure to check your teacher’s weekly digital agenda regularly for important assignments, due dates, reminders, and upcoming events.
💻 Charged Chromebooks: Beginning tomorrow, students should bring their Chromebook to school every day. It is imperative that Chromebooks are fully charged at home each night so students are prepared to participate in learning activities throughout the school day. Even if your scholar’s Chromebook has not yet been completely set up, please begin sending it to school daily tomorrow. We encourage families to make charging the Chromebook each night part of your scholar’s regular bedtime routine.

Reading Updates:
Unit 1 Week 1
This week, students will begin Unit 1 of MyView Literacy by exploring the elements of realistic fiction through engaging stories such as “Trash on the Trail” and “The Blackout.” Students will identify characters, setting, and key events, while practicing retelling, identifying important details, and making connections.
🏠 How Can Families Help at Home?
Families can support learning by reading stories together and talking about the elements of realistic fiction. Ask your child to identify the characters, setting, problem, and important events in the story. Encourage them to think about whether the events could really happen in real life. You can also ask questions like, “What makes this story realistic?” or “How do you know?” 📖✨
Phonics & Spelling
This week in Phonics, students will review words with the short /a/ sound as well as words with the /m/, /s/, and /t/ sounds. Our spelling words, this week, are the following: am, at, mat, sat, and Sam.
We will also review the following high-frequency words: see, a, is, his, and I. High-frequency words are words that appear often in books and everyday reading. Sometimes, these words follow regular spelling patterns and can be sounded out. Other times, they have irregular spelling patterns that must be memorized. We call these spelling patterns “heart parts” because students must know them by heart. Learning these words helps students recognize them quickly and read more smoothly and confidently.
Math Updates:
Topic 1
This week, students will build on their Kindergarten learning about addition and subtraction. We’ll strengthen our understanding by exploring different types of problems, including adding to, putting together, taking away, taking apart, and comparing.
We will send home a home-school connection letter, tomorrow, giving more information on what your scholar can expect to learn. Additional information on this topic can also be found here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Cts1PLevdwpcSPVkIgdxjE7oIjN0uzPh/view?usp=sharing
🏠 How Can Families Help at Home?
Families can support learning by practicing addition and subtraction in everyday situations. Ask your child simple questions such as, “If we have 5 apples and add 2 more, how many do we have?” or “We have 8 crayons and take away 3. How many are left?” Encourage your child to draw pictures, use objects, or explain their thinking to solve problems. You can also practice comparing groups by asking, “Which group has more? Which has fewer?”
Science Updates:
Our first graders are excited to begin Topic 1 in Science, where we will observe and investigate light and sound! Students will explore where light and sound come from, make observations, ask questions, and investigate how they interact with the world around us.
🏠 How Can Families Help at Home?
Encourage your child to be a scientist at home! Look for different sources of light and sound, discuss what they notice, and ask questions such as, “What do you see?” “What do you hear?” and “What do you think will happen?” You can even explore how sounds change when objects are tapped, shaken, or plucked. 🔎✨
Social Studies Updates:
This week, students will begin Chapter 1 in Social Studies, where they will learn what it means to be a good citizen and explore how our community and government work together. Students will learn about rights and responsibilities, rules and laws, community leaders, and the role of government. They will also practice important skills such as distinguishing fact from fiction, solving problems, and making thoughtful choices.
🏠 How Families Can Help at Home?
Talk with your child about ways your family members can be good citizens. Discuss rules, responsibilities, and why we have laws, and encourage your child to share examples of how they can help make their classroom, school, and community a better place.
Health Updates:
In health, students will focus on one topic each month. Our focus this month is “Keeping Our Great Body Safe.” Students will learn simple, age-appropriate ways to make safe choices, protect themselves, and take care of their bodies at school, at home, and in their community.
🏠 How Families Can Help at Home?
Families can help by talking with their child about making safe choices at home and in the community. Discuss important safety habits such as knowing trusted adults, following rules, using objects safely, and knowing what to do in an emergency. Encourage your child to explain why safety rules are important and practice safe choices together during everyday activities.
Second Grade
Grade Level Blurb:
🎉 We did it! Week One of 2nd Grade is officially in the books! 📚✨
We are so excited to have completed our first week together! Next week, we are diving headfirst into our core instruction.
Here are a few quick reminders to keep us set up for success:
Assessments & Chromebooks: All scholars should have finished some of their Beginning-of-the-Year assessments on Friday. If your scholar hasn't completed theirs yet, they will complete them this week. Please send your scholar to school on Monday with their fully charged Chromebook 💻⚡. We will double-check that everyone’s tech is ready to go!
Daily Folders & Agendas: Green communication folders 🟩 and agenda books 📖 go into full effect next week! Please make it a habit to check both daily.
Important Forms: If you haven't already, please take a moment to complete these required links:
Snack Time: We enjoy a daily snack right at the end of the day! Everyone is encouraged to pack a snack from home 🍏. Sometimes friends forget, so extra snack donations for the classroom are always greatly appreciated! 🍿
We are a 2nd grade family now! Please feel free to reach out to your scholar’s teacher anytime with questions or concerns.
Only 176 days of 2nd grade to go—we’ve got this! 💪🌟
Reading Updates:
📖 Unit 1 in Reading Begins Monday! 🌟
We are so excited to launch our very first Reading unit with the big question: “How do different places affect us?”! Next week, our scholars will dive into Realistic Fiction 📚—reading engaging stories about characters just like them and making meaningful connections to the world around them.
Here is what to watch for this week:
✏️ Spelling Packets: Scholars will receive their first spelling packet on Monday.
📝 Spelling Test: Our very first test will take place this Friday!
🍕 Reading Incentive Program: To encourage reading every single day, we are adopting a fun reading incentive program (like Pizza Hut's BOOK IT! program)! Keep an eye out for detailed information coming home in your scholar's green communication folder 🟩.
A special note for our amazing scholars: Learning new words and exploring new stories is a big adventure! Take your time, practice a little bit each day, and do your best. You are capable of doing incredible things this year—we believe in you! Let's make week two awesome!
Math Updates:
🔢 Math Update: Fluently Adding and Subtracting Within 20! ➕➖
Starting Monday, we are kicking off our very first math topic! Our scholars will be working on building fluency with addition and subtraction facts within 20.
Here is how homework and home practice will work:
📄 Math Practice Packets: Scholars will bring home a math packet that matches what we are learning in class so you can practice together at home.
🗓️ Packet Due Dates: Every math topic has a different number of lessons, so each teacher will share the due date for their class packet as we move through the unit. Keep an eye out for updates from your scholar's teacher!
💡 Fun Ways to Practice at Home:
🎲 Dice & Card Games: Roll two dice or pull two cards from a deck (face cards = 10, Ace = 1) and have your scholar add them together or subtract the smaller number from the larger one.
🍎 Snack-Time Math: Use snacks (pretzel sticks, raisins, cereal), Lego bricks, or coins to build hands-on addition and subtraction problems.
⏱️ Fact Family Dash: Call out a number like "12" and see how many different addition or subtraction combinations your scholar can name in 30 seconds!
To our scholars: Math is like a muscle—the more you practice, the stronger it gets! You’ve got all the tools you need to crush this unit. Keep practicing and keep shining! 💪⭐
Science Updates:
🔬 Science Update: Exploring Matter! 🧪🎈
This upcoming week, our scholars will complete their Science Beginning-of-the-Year Assessment before we jump into our very first science topic: Matter!
Throughout this unit, scholars will explore the world around them by observing, describing, and investigating solids, liquids, and gases!
💡 Fun Activities to Try at Home:
🕵️ Solid, Liquid, Gas Scavenger Hunt: Walk around the house or kitchen together and find 2 solids (like a book or a wooden spoon), 2 liquids (like water or milk), and 1 gas (like the air inside a balloon or steam from warm water)!
🧊 The Great Ice Cube Race: Place an ice cube on a plate and watch it melt! Talk about how a solid ice cube turns into liquid water when heated, and ask your scholar what would happen if you boiled that water (it turns into gas/steam!).
🎈 Air in Action: Blow up a balloon or squeeze an empty plastic bottle in a sink of water to watch bubbles escape. It’s a great visual way to show that gas takes up space, even though we can't always see it!
🥣 Kitchen Mixing & Sorting: Group household items by their physical properties—sort objects by hard vs. soft, rough vs. smooth, or heavy vs. light.
To our mini-scientists: You interact with matter every single second of the day! Get ready to put on your scientist hats and start observing! 🥼✨
Social Studies Updates:
🌎 Social Studies Update: Families Today and in the Past! 📜🏠
This upcoming week, our scholars will take their Social Studies Beginning-of-the-Year Assessment before we kick off our very first topic: Families Today and in the Past!
During this unit, scholars will explore how family life, traditions, and daily routines have changed over time and how different families share special connections and history. ❤️
💡 Fun Activities to Try at Home:
📸 Family Photo Blast from the Past: Pull out old photo albums or digital photos! Show your scholar pictures of parents, grandparents, or extended family when they were younger. Compare what clothes, toys, and cars looked like then versus now.
🗣️ Interview a Family Member: Have your scholar ask a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or parent 3 simple questions (e.g., "What was your favorite school subject?", "What games did you play for fun?", or "What was your favorite snack?").
🌳 Draw a Mini Family Tree: Draw a simple family tree together, talking about how everyone is connected and sharing a special memory about each person.
🍲 Share a Family Tradition: Talk about a recipe, holiday tradition, or weekend routine that has been passed down in your family and why it matters to you.
To our scholars: Your family story is part of history! We can't wait to learn all about the amazing people who make you, you! 🌟✨
Health Updates:
🛡️ Health Update: Let's Stay Safe! 🏊♂️🏫🏡
Starting this week, we are launching our monthly health topics for the month of September! Our very first focus will be "Let's Stay Safe."
Throughout the month, scholars will learn practical ways to keep themselves and others safe across different everyday settings:
🏊 Pool & Water Safety: Understanding rules around water, swimming with supervision, and staying safe during recreation.
🏫 Neighborhood & School Safety: Practicing crosswalk safety, playground rules, staying aware of surroundings, and knowing who trusted adults are in the community.
🏡 Home Safety: Learning about basic emergency procedures, staying away from harmful household items, and practice routines at home.
💡 Conversations to Have at Home:
🚨 Review Emergency Numbers: Practice reciting your phone number and home address with your scholar, and remind them when and how to call 911.
🛑 Point Out Safety Signs: While driving or walking around the neighborhood, ask your scholar to identify stop signs, crosswalk signals, and bus stop rules.
🗣️ Name Trusted Adults: Talk about who the "trusted adults" are at home, at school, and in your community that your scholar can go to if they ever feel unsafe.
Working together, we can help our 2nd graders build smart safety habits that last a lifetime! Stay safe and keep shining! 🌟✨
Third Grade
Grade Level Blurb:
Greetings from the Third Grade Team!
Parents and students….Welcome to the 3GA (think NBA). This year the third grade team will be known as the 3rd Grade Association with four fantastic teams in the league. Let me take a minute and introduce you to the teams. Learning in the third grade association this year we have:
Howard Heat - they are fired up to learn;
White’s Wizards - knowledge is their superpower;
Madison’s Mystics - where learning is magical and
Flores Fever - we have a deep passion about learning.
Our teaching team wants to build a stronger sense of community among all third grade classes this year. To put that idea into play, we hope to host a friendly basketball tournament across grade levels. More events and activities will come later in the year.
In other news, we successfully completed our first week back to school. Here’s a peek into our classes:

Math Updates:
Mr. White’s 3rd Grade Math & Science classes had an exciting first week in 3rd grade! This week, scholars focused on getting acclimated to our new classroom community, learning expectations and routines, and beginning our journey as mathematicians and scientists.
In math, we began reviewing foundational addition and subtraction skills while working on building accuracy, fluency, and confidence. As we prepare for more advanced 3rd-grade concepts—including multiplication and division—families are encouraged to continue practicing basic addition and subtraction facts at home.
We also spent time building our classroom community and emphasizing the importance of respect, responsibility, active listening, and knowing when it is time to have fun versus when it is time to “lock in” and learn!
Scholars received their new Take-Home Folders, which should travel between home and school every day. Families also received Parent Input and Family Goals forms, giving them an opportunity to share their scholar’s strengths, interests, learning preferences, areas of growth, and goals for the school year. This information will help strengthen our home-to-school partnership and allow me to better support each scholar as an individual.
As we close out Week 1, I’m excited about the personalities, curiosity, and potential our scholars have already brought into the classroom. We’re looking forward to a year filled with learning, growth, exploration, and plenty of opportunities for our 3rd graders to shine!
Mrs. Flores’ students played a few Math games this week that helped review several foundational Math skills. We participated in an introduction to multiplication using repeated addition which is our first official text lesson. I also stressed the importance of learning the multiplication facts. This is one of the most important skills to master this year. Check the homework label in the take home folder for a little more information.
Science Updates:
The scientific method was the focus this first week in Mrs. Flores’ science class. We discussed the steps by using a poster, PowerPoint, and short video. We also completed a graded review activity on those steps. However, the highlight was our first lab where we applied those steps to a simple experiment. I hope to have pics on my class website.
Health Updates:
In Health this week, Mrs. Flores’ students participated in a quick activity for our first unit on safe homes.
Even though it was only the first week, from the opening tip of the ball, we were ready to learn, grow, and win together!
Reminders:
Please make sure you have completed the emergency contact form.
Make sure you have completed the volunteer paperwork. We have a very small list of possible chaperones as of this writing. This must be completed every year.
The students need a chromebook and headphones on a daily basis. Testing is scheduled to start in a week.

Grade Level Blurb:
Greetings Team 4Ward,
☀️I hope that message finds you well. We have concluded our first week of school and are just getting started. There is a lot of learning and growth that will occur throughout the year. We have begun our textbook diagnostics and will begin school wide diagnostic testing in the upcoming weeks. This week all classes will begin using the curriculum and homework will begin.
🏫Parent Volunteers:
Team 4Ward loves going on field trips and in the past have taken a number of trips during the year. In order for field trips to occur we need approved volunteers that are able to chaperone. Some trips are at risk of being canceled if we do not have enough parent volunteers. Only Prince George’s County Public School cleared volunteers will be able to go on trips and support in the building If you have already completed your background check in previous years, all you must do now is complete the SafeSchool Videos. Once these are complete please share your completion with Ms. Reese at lreese@cmitsouthes.org.
Please click this link to get more information helping out the classroom by becoming an approved volunteer: https://www.pgcps.org/offices/ograc/volunteer#volunteer-process
💻Many class activities use online tools. A charged computer ensures your child can fully participate in lessons and complete assignments. Our students also need a pair of wired headphones to complete activities and for testing. Students who arrive on time are better prepared for learning and reduce classroom disruptions. Please plan to have your child at school a few minutes early each day. A healthy breakfast helps students focus and have energy for learning. School breakfast is available daily until 8:00 when students arrive in the morning.
We are grateful for your ongoing support in helping students feel safe, prepared, and excited about learning. Thank you for partnering with us to make this a positive school year. Let’s finish strong together!!
Warmly,
Team 4Ward

This is a friendly reminder that late work is only accepted if a student has an excused absence! If a scholar is absent and does not bring a note they will earn a 0 on the assignment that was missed. Please read the reminders to ensure that you are partnering with your scholars to make them successful for school. If a scholar leaves early or arrives late to school and it is not excused they will earn a 0 for all work that is not completed.
If your scholar is absent, please complete the CMIT South ES Absence Google Form within 3 days of your scholar returning back to school. https://forms.gle/euXzCpDvNGbLwb8U6 Work is provided to students upon their return to school with an excused absence.
Communications:
Students must bring their agenda book each day. Teachers will note the agenda book and it should be signed nightly by the adult at home.
Please allow up to 48 business hours for all responses to emails and Classdojo messages. Teachers are not actively monitoring their emails during the day because we are engaged in instruction. Emails are not monitored over the weekend or in the evening hours when teachers have gone home. If the message sent relates to dismissal changes please call the school directly to leave a message with the front office.
Grading:
Please check Synergy weekly to see scholar’s updated grades. Canvas is a Learning Management System in which scholars utilize to complete assignments and get access to materials. The grades entered in Synergy are those that will be used to calculate progress reports and report cards.
It is imperative that work is complete and turned in on time in order to receive full credit. Our district has set policies regarding assignment completion and make-up assignments. Only students that have an excused absence will be given an opportunity to receive and complete missing assignments. Assignments not completed will receive a final grade of “0.”
Reading Updates:
This Week:
We began building our literacy community, we are a community of readers and writers. We practice discussion techniques that will be used throughout the year. In fourth grade there is an increase in writing and reading expectations. The first few weeks reading teachers will model how to read complex text and how to express our thoughts in written form.
Next Week:
We will open our Volume 1 textbooks and read our first story of 4th Grade. This week we will read “Reaching for the Moon,” a personal narrative written by Buzz Aldrin. In this story we seek to answer how can a place affect how we live. We will begin generating ideas to create our own personal narrative stories. We will also begin word study with this week’s focus on words with the endings -ed, -ing, and -s.
Math Updates:
🧮 Welcome to 4th Grade Math!
Welcome to 4th Grade Math! This year, we’re going to work hard, think deeply, and discover that there’s more than one way to solve a math problem. Our goal is to become confident mathematical thinkers, problem-solvers, and communicators!
⭐ What to Expect
During our first week, we’ll focus on getting comfortable with our math routines, expectations, and learning tools while building our math community. Students will begin exploring place value, numbers, estimation, and strategies for solving problems. As the year continues, we’ll build our skills with multi-digit addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, measurement, data, and geometry.
Math class will include a mix of whole-group lessons, partner and small-group work, math discussions, hands-on activities, independent practice, and problem-solving. Students will be expected to explain their thinking, use appropriate strategies and tools, and persevere when a problem feels challenging.
We’re ready for a great year of learning, growing, and becoming math stars! 🌟
Science Updates:
First Week of School: Off to a STEMtastic Start!
Coming Up in Science: Beginning next week, scholars will officially launch Topic 1: Energy and Motion. Throughout this topic, students will investigate how energy can be transferred through sound, light, heat, motion, and electric currents. They will explore the relationship between an object's speed and energy, investigate what happens to energy when objects collide, and eventually apply their learning by designing and testing a device that converts energy from one form to another.
Families can support our young scientists at home by asking, “What did you discover about energy today?” Having scholars explain what they are learning in their own words is a great way to strengthen their understanding and build scientific vocabulary.
We are excited for a year filled with curiosity, investigation, problem-solving, and lots of STEM learning!
Social Studies Updates:
This week was all about building our classroom community, learning expectations, and getting to know one another! 🎉 Scholars participated in a variety of team-building activities that encouraged communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and teamwork. We also spent time learning and practicing our classroom expectations and routines to help create a positive, respectful, and productive learning environment.
We began learning about timelines and how they can be used to organize important events in chronological order. Scholars explored the difference between past, present, and future events and discussed how timelines help us understand the order in which events occur. To apply what we learned, scholars created their own personal timelines featuring significant events and milestones from their lives. This activity allowed them to practice sequencing events while reflecting on experiences that have helped shape who they are today.
Next week, we will begin learning how to read and use maps! Scholars will learn about important map features, including the title, compass rose, map key/legend, symbols, and scale. They will practice using these features to locate places, identify directions, and interpret information shown on different types of maps. 🗺️
