GES May Newsletter
Updates and Reminders
Principal Corner
Dear Garfield Elementary Families,
As we welcome the month of May, there is a great deal of excitement and activity ahead. I would like to extend a warm invitation to all of our families to join us for two special upcoming events. Our PAC-sponsored school dance on May 1 will be a wonderful opportunity for students and families to connect and celebrate together and see what our 5th Graders have put together. Later in the month, on May 26, we will host our Ice Cream Family Connection event. We are especially excited to welcome our incoming kindergarten students and their families at this gathering—it’s a great way to begin building connections within our school community and send off the 5th grade students.
May is also a busy time for learning beyond the classroom. Many of our students will be participating in field trips, providing valuable hands-on experiences that enrich their education. If you have any questions about upcoming trips, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office or your child’s teacher.
I’ve truly enjoyed spending time in classrooms this past month and witnessing firsthand the dedication our students have shown while completing their MCA assessments. Their hard work and focus have been impressive. Thank you for your continued support throughout April in helping your children do their very best.
As we look ahead, please note that the last day of school will be May 29. We remain committed to making the most of our time together, including opportunities to learn and explore outside the classroom as the weather improves.
If you have any questions as we begin planning for next year, please feel free to reach out—we are here to support you.
I would also like to take a moment to recognize some important members of our Garfield community. We extend our sincere gratitude to Randy Burns and Ms. Nieland for their years of dedicated service. We wish them all the best in their retirement—they will be greatly missed. Additionally, we thank Ms. Peterson for her contributions to Garfield Elementary and wish her well as she transitions to a new position.
Finally, as we prepare to send off our 5th grade students to middle school, we are proud of all they have accomplished. We know they are well-prepared and will continue to succeed in this next chapter.
Thank you for being such an important part of our school community. Have an awesome May!
Warm regards,
Dr. Michelle Bethke-Kaliher, PhD.
Principal, Garfield Elementary
Meet Garfield Staff:
Michelle Hanson - Kindergarten Teacher
Michelle Hanson has been a dedicated educator for many years and brings both experience and heart to her work at GES. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from SMSU in 1988 and later completed her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, also from SMSU, in 2014. Michelle lives by the motto, “Do what you love. Love what you do,” a mindset that shines through in her commitment to students and colleagues alike.
Outside of school, Michelle enjoys baking, reading, and swimming. She also values time spent with friends and family, especially in small, meaningful gatherings. While she says there are too many reasons to fully capture why she loves working at GES, it’s clear that the sense of community plays a big role. One of her favorite memories is the exciting day she, Mrs. Call, and Mrs. Rubner realized they had secured enough funding to order a large piece of playground equipment—a moment that made a lasting impact on the school.
Michelle describes herself as a baked potato—tough and a little salty on the outside, but soft and warm underneath. When it comes to travel, she’s open to going anywhere, as long as she has someone to share the adventure with. If her life had a theme song, it would be “The Climb,” reflecting her steady, determined approach to life and work. Interestingly, Michelle always knew she wanted to be a teacher—ever since she was a third grader at GES—and she can’t imagine doing anything else.
Her photo features her family, including her two grandchildren, Winston (8) and Aspen (6), celebrating Christmas together—though she notes her mom is missing, as she’s usually the one behind the camera
Kalissa Bloom - Speech
Kalissa Bloom earned both her undergraduate and master’s degrees in Speech-Language Pathology from Minnesota State University Moorhead (Go Dragons!). She is currently in her second year with Alexandria Public Schools, where she supports students’ communication and learning across a variety of school settings. Kalissa lives by the motto, “Believe you can, and you’re already halfway there,” and brings that positive mindset into her work each day. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time outdoors camping, boating, and walking her dog, as well as listening to audiobooks and podcasts, tackling house projects, traveling, and being with family and friends. She loves working at GES because of its strong sense of community, where staff and students are welcoming, supportive, and full of positive energy—something she especially appreciates during the daily schoolwide morning meetings. If Kalissa were a potato, she says she’d be a baked potato—reliable, comforting, and adaptable to whatever is needed! One of her favorite photos captures a special moment hiking in Bayfield, Wisconsin, with her husband, Matt, and their puppy, Boston.
