Fair Haven Union Middle School
October 15th Newsletter
Note from the Middle School Principal
Good Afternoon Middle School Families,
It is important to recognize the positive! Our 7th grade team has elected to do monthly awards centered around themes. Our 8th grade team has elected to do quarterly awards. That progression helps our students begin to make the transition from more immediate feedback to less immediate feedback and prepare them for their high school experience. These awards are not as formal as what is done at the high school and are more about reinforcing the behaviors we hope to see students internalize as they mature and move forward. The awards are presented in TA during a gathering of the entire grade in our Middle School Multipurpose Space. The middle school teams continue to talk about adding additional academic awards but are being thoughtful about how we do this as we appreciate a focus on effort and habits as well as academic performance.
The Water Team (7th grade) at Fair Haven Union Middle School held their first monthly celebration on September 27th. Numerous students were recognized for consistently demonstrating outstanding effort and attitude during the months of August and September. The team has been specifically focused on helping students understand the power of being fully present and the benefits of being in the “here and now.” The award recipients embodied those values. In addition, the team presented the prestigious and coveted White Water Rafting TA Crest Challenge trophy to Mrs. Crumb's TA, the TA who was able to keep their TA crest in the best shape as they navigated the mighty Sacandaga River during the rafting trip.
We have also started Project Build with Mr. Chris Stanton again. Two students were chosen by teachers from each team to spend one day a week with Mr. Stanton working on a wood-working project. Once this group finishes their project, teams will choose two new students and those four will begin a new project with Mr. Stanton. This experience engages students and provides a unique experience that they do not get in the traditional classroom setting. We are grateful that Mr. Stanton continues to share his expertise and skills in ways that benefit our students and community.
Wishing you a wonderful week,
Jennefer Paquette

Class Spotlights
Heath and Digital Media
Health - Jackie Pike - We just wrapped up our nutrition unit. We discussed the 6 essential nutrients and why each one is crucial for the body. We also talked about food choices and focusing on nutrient-dense foods and limiting the added sugar. Students completed nutrient superheroes.
Digital Media - Jin-A Chang - In Digital Media, we are working on understanding how apps work. Students are planning an app out on paper, and then doing some simple coding in Javascript to see how to make a basic app function.
Academic Note
Our first eligibility check occurred in early October. With new faces in many of the positions that support our eligibility checks, we had to pause and revisit our process from last year to ensure that we are all clear about the different steps.
Please continue checking PowerSchool as well as encouraging your child to check PowerSchool. Doing so on a regular basis will help you stay up to date. If you are unable to access it, please reach out and we will help you troubleshoot. Also, be sure to ask your student to see their assignment book. The assignment book can be a great tool to connect home and school. Helping our students see the value in the assignment book as a tool to stay organized and manage their time takes all of us!
Some students, at this age, will rush through assignments to achieve 'done' status. However, the work may not be of the quality or as accurate as they are capable of. Additionally, students often have opportunities to improve their work, but will elect to be satisfied with 'done' as compared to 'done well.' More and more as they move through 7th into 8th, this choice is on the shoulders of the students to own the decisions about their work and the quality of it. It takes reminders from school and from home to push and challenge students to be the best that they can and to make the best decisions around academic demands.
We thank you for your support and the teamwork!
