Attendance and Absences
If your student is absent, excuse notes must be shared with Ms. Stephens, attendance counselor. To ensure accurate attendance records, please submit attendance excuse notes – including those from a doctor – in one of the following ways:
- Submit through Aspen Go
- Send an email to DealAttendance@k12.dc.gov
- Drop off at school (Welcome Center)
Tardy arrivals and early dismissals require a submitted excuse note. You can also reach out to teachers for information about missed assignments.
Tardy Hall
Your student's transition to middle school includes a new responsibility - being on time for each class period each day. Sixth grade students who are late for three or more class periods per week will be required to attend tardy hall on Thursday afternoons from 3:30 - 4:30 PM.
Because students are missing important instruction when they are late for class, students at 6th grade tardy hall will leverage their time to complete missed work and reflect on ways they can ensure on-time arrival moving forward. If your student qualifies for tardy hall, you will be notified by Ms. Watson, 6th grade dean, during the week of their tardy hall assignment.
Teacher Wishlists

English and Language Arts with Mx. Winston
Scholars will complete their second skills assessment on Wednesday, October 7th, and Thursday, October 8th, answering multiple-choice questions on the first day and writing a scaffolded CERER response on the second. I’ll score the exam’s writing section as the term’s first of two summative assessments.
On Friday, October 9th, I’ll check that scholars have filed all unit texts in the “Readings/Texts” section of their ELA binders. I’ll introduce a copy request form on Monday; scholars should request any missing readings before 3:30 p.m. Thursday so I can provide copies ahead of Friday’s check.
Scholars will also complete an independent reading project progress check on Friday, October 9th; please remind them to bring their physical books, if possible. I’ll also provide reminders in class throughout the week. They’ll work on their planning sheet by describing three characters, identifying a theme, summarizing the story without revealing the ending, and explaining how the book offers a mirror, window, or sliding glass door.
Friday’s independent reading time will give scholars a head start on their daily 20 minutes of reading. Maintaining this habit will help them meet the project deadline of Monday, October 19th.
As always, please encourage your scholar to read for at least 20 minutes each night. Consistent reading will help them stay on track for the October 19 project deadline.
ELA Tutorial
Math with Mr. Ledix
Math 6
Scholars will continue their work on ratios, moving onto comparing measurements such as speed, weight, distance, volume, etc. They will also receive feedback on recent Summatives and Formatives.
Math 7
Scholars will continue their work on rigid transformations, reinforcing the concept of congruence and learning about angle measures in triangles and with transversals. They will also take a Formative on Wednesday after a planned practice day on Tuesday.
World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft
This week, students began working on their Community Action Letters. They brainstormed an issue they would like to see improved in their community or the city (Form D: Community Action Letter Brainstorm Organizer). They also learned about representation in DC and determined the appropriate local representative to contact. Students then began writing their rough drafts and participating in peer editing to strengthen their letters.
Next week, students will use feedback to complete and polish their final drafts. We will then print, address, and mail our letters to local representatives, giving students the opportunity to use their voices to advocate for positive change in their communities!
Students will need to bring a letter-sized envelope and a stamp to school next week so that we can mail their completed Community Action Letters.
Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan
Hello scientists! What an incredible week of sweet science! Students used their knowledge of plate tectonics to examine its effects on the different land formations on Earth, culminating in the Milky Way Lab where students showed how convergent collision, convergent subduction, divergent, and transform boundaries can deform the surface of Earth in multiple ways. Wonderful work!
Next week is centered on reviewing the different ways that plate motion at boundaries affects the surface of the Earth in order to prepare students for our next sweet lab (sorry for the dental bills) - The Great Shakeout Lab, which will occur over this upcoming week and the following week. In this lab, students will use examples of earthquake-related building adaptations from seismically active regions around the world to design a building out of toothpicks and marshmallows which will be tested for survivability with P, S, and RL earthquake waves. This is also a perfect way to celebrate International Shakeout Day, a worldwide earthquake drill event on Thursday, October 15th!

Roots!
The roots for quiz 1.6 are:
- Alp = mountain (think alpine, The Alps)
- Div = to separate (think division, dividend, divorce)
- Sphere = ball (think geosphere, atmosphere, spherical)
- Co/con/com = with, together (think coworker, connect, communicate)
- Epi = on, upon (think epilogue, epithet, epinephrine)
*Keepers: uni, bi, tri, pre, post, -ic, mis, manu, micro, geo, multi, seismo, petro, sub, super
I will be out on Friday, October 9th, so students will be taking the quiz on Thursday, October 8th instead.
This is your student's last Roots Quiz of the first quarter – their summative is scheduled for Friday, October 16th. This is their first summative on paper, and it is imperative that students complete the assigned study guide AND to work on the Roots Blooket that's been posted to Canvas.
