Exploring History: This Month in Ms. LeFebvre's Holocaust and Genocide Classes
Over the past weeks, our class has been examining the rise and rule of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. We have been analyzing the causes and devastating consequences of the Cambodian genocide, and evaluating the broader impact of authoritarian regimes on human rights and historical memory. Through discussion, critical analysis, and primary source exploration, students are deepening their understanding of this tragic chapter in world history and its lasting global significance.
Ms. Molloy's Reading Corner
In English class, we are currently reading One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus. As we dive into this engaging mystery, students are analyzing character development, exploring themes of truth, identity, and perception, and discussing how bias and assumptions shape our understanding of others. Through close reading, group discussions, and written reflections, students are building critical thinking skills while enjoying a suspenseful, thought-provoking story.n
Meanwhile, in Psychology, students have been exploring abnormal psychology, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation. Through these studies, they are learning to identify effective strategies for motivating themselves and others. The topic of abnormal psychology has sparked great interest, and as we continue, students are breaking it down into smaller, more specific areas, such as specific behaviors and diagnoses, to deepen their understanding.
Exploring Music with Mr. DePaola- from the Broadway to the British Invasion
Musical Theatre is studying The Matrix and examining how it shares surprising similarities with musical theatre. Students are exploring how the film uses heightened storytelling, emotional arcs, and choreographed action sequences that parallel the techniques used in stage musicals.
Students are also analyzing themes like transformation, identity, and rebellion, connecting them to the journeys of classic musical theatre characters. Discussions focus on how both musicals and The Matrix build immersive, exaggerated worlds that challenge audiences to think beyond reality.
Legacy of Popular Music
Legacy of Popular Music is studying the groundbreaking year of 1967, focusing on artists like The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, and The Beatles. Students are listening to and analyzing legendary albums like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Magical Mystery Tour to understand how music reflected and shaped the culture of the time.
Students are discussing how innovation in songwriting, recording techniques, and lyrical content pushed popular music into new territory. The class is examining how these iconic albums still influence music and culture today, setting a new standard for what rock music could be.
Music Technology
Music Technology is studying Johnny Cash and exploring his connection to music technology. Students are examining how Cash’s career intersected with major changes in recording technology, from early analog techniques to later innovations in live performance recording and television broadcasts.
The class is also discussing how Johnny Cash’s sound and style were shaped by the limitations and possibilities of the recording technology available during his time. Students are analyzing specific recordings to see how technology influenced the delivery and emotional impact of his music.
