Summer Fun with our Flat Eagle

Let's have some fun this summer with our Flat Eagle. Each staff member and student in Grades K-4 received a Flat Eagle. Students are encouraged to cut out and decorate their Flat Eagle. Then the fun begins. Please encourage your child to take their flat eagle on their summer adventures. They can then take pictures of them with their Flat Eagle. Please send the pictures to Mrs. Wickenheiser via email at jwickenheiser@doversd.org. This email address is also on the back of the Flat Eagle. A movie will then be made showcasing each of our Flat Eagles. If your child was absent or misplaced their eagle, you may stop by the Leib office over the summer to get a Flat Eagle. Thank you to Mrs. Stormes for designing our Flat Eagle.

Happy flying!

Congratulations to our Fifth Grade students

Each year, our Fifth-grade students take a final walk through the hallways of Leib as students. Students, teachers, and staff cheer them on as they move up to the middle school. The video of this year's walk is below. Special thanks to Miss Bentzel for organizing our Fifth-grade walk. We wish our Fifth-grade students the best as they soar to new heights as a PROUD eagle.

Summer Educational Math Activities

Here are some engaging and educational math activities for elementary students to enjoy over the summer:

Math Scavenger Hunt

Create a list of math-related items or tasks for students to find or complete around the house, yard, or neighborhood. Examples include finding objects in pairs, counting the number of steps to a specific location, or identifying shapes in everyday objects.

Cooking and Baking

Involve students in cooking or baking, which naturally incorporates math skills such as measuring ingredients, understanding fractions, and following sequences.

Outdoor Math Games

Water Balloon Math: Write math problems on water balloons and have students solve them before they can throw the balloon.

Hopscotch Math: Create a hopscotch grid with numbers and have students solve math problems by hopping to the correct answer.

Math Art Projects

Geometry Art: Use shapes to create pictures and patterns. This can be done with drawing, cutting out shapes from colored paper, or using objects like sticks and stones.

Symmetry Drawing: Have students draw one half of a picture and then complete it to practice symmetry.

Math Board Games and Card Games

Games like "Math Bingo," "Monopoly," "Set," and "24 Game" can make math practice fun. Card games like "War" can be adapted to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.

STEM Building Challenges

Provide materials like LEGO bricks, building blocks, or recyclable materials and challenge students to build structures that meet certain criteria (e.g., tallest tower, a bridge that can hold weight).

Nature Math Walk

Take a walk and incorporate math by counting different types of plants, estimating distances, or measuring the circumference of trees.

Online Math Games and Apps

There are numerous websites and apps designed to make math fun, such as:

Khan Academy Kids

Prodigy Math Game

Cool Math Games

Splash Learn

Math Journals

Encourage students to keep a math journal where they can solve daily math problems, draw pictures of math concepts, or write about how they used math in their daily activities.

Shopping Math

During trips to the grocery store, involve students in weighing produce, comparing prices, calculating totals, and understanding discounts and change.

Puzzles and Riddles

Introduce students to math puzzles and riddles that challenge their logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Sudoku, magic squares, and logic puzzles are great options.

DIY Math Tools

Create tools like number lines, fraction strips, or a multiplication chart. Using these tools in hands-on activities can solidify understanding of basic math concepts.

These activities not only reinforce math skills but also show students how math is present in everyday life, making it both relevant and fun.

Student Artwork!

Each year, Mrs. Stormes selects one piece of artwork from Grades K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 to have created into a canvas. Congratulations to the 23-24 winners: Miranda Dugan, Kingston Rinehart, and Desmond Stackfield.

The students will receive their artwork when they come to Leib for their senior walk. Each student also received a sketchbook with their artwork on the front cover. Special thanks to Mrs. Stormes for doing this each year!

Sumdog Competition

For the fourth year in a row, Leib Elementary participated in the Sumdog Math Contest and our students had some impressive results! Seven Leib students placed in the Top 25 out of 7,906 students who participated throughout the United States. In addition, Mrs. Patterson’s first-grade class placed first out of 488 classes. Thank you to Katie Shaffer for organizing Sumdog for our school and to our PTO for sponsoring the purchase of Sumdog and the medals. We also thank the teachers for supporting the competition in their classroom

Remake Learning Day comes to Leib

This May, 1st and 2nd Grade students at Leib Elementary participated in a Remake Learning Day activity with students from across Pennsylvania. With the help of our 4th-grade students, they completed the "Catapult Challenge" where they learned about what catapults were and then used given materials to successfully build one. At the end of the event, students launched ping pong balls from their catapults and reflected on important Career Readiness Skills and Standards that were met through this STEM activity. Leib Elementary School was one of just 30 schools in the entire state to be given a banner highlighting that over 100 students at our school completed the challenge by creating artifacts for their career portfolios.

Special thanks to Mr. Murphy for bringing this opportunity to our school and to our Fourth-grade students for assisting our younger students. We would also like to thank Jill Patterson, Kristen DiBlasi, Lorelei Stoner, Amy Crouse, Mary Brittain, Kristin Fronk, and Terry Dull for supporting this opportunity for our students.

Math-a-Thon

Leib Elementary School has been participating in Math-a-Thon annually for 31 years. The proceeds benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. During this time, Leib students and families have raised $81,938.34. Each participant is given a booklet to solve math problems at their grade level. The Math-a-Thon is a labor of love that hopefully will continue for years to come!

Thank you to Mrs. Dull for organizing Math-a-Thon for Leib as well as our students and families for their support.

Envirothon Highlights

This year, Leib Elementary School had 19 students participate on our Envirothon teams across the 3rd, 4th and 5th Grade levels. Beginning in November, all students began practicing learning about Aquatics, Forestry, and Wildlife while our 5th Graders also had a Current Issues topic on Biodiversity to learn about.

In May, all students went to participate in the annual York County Envirothon competition at John Rudy County Park. Our 3rd and 4th Grade teams, the Rambunctious Raccoons and Wacky Walnuts, competed with 64 teams. The Rambunctious Raccoons earned a bronze level proficiency award, while the Wacky Walnuts earned silver level proficiency.

In the 5th and 6th Grade competitions, we had two teams compete, the Unspotted Lanternflies and Non-Polluted Watersheds. The Non-Polluted Watersheds finished 3rd in the York County Competition out of 41 teams. They earned a 1st place finish in the Aquatics competition and 3rd place finish in the Wildlife competition.

Congratulations to all students for another successful year of learning about our environment!

Thank you to our advisors, Jeff Judy and John Marc Murphy. Thank you also to the families of participating students for bringing their children to school for practices
