🐝FROM MR. B...
This week's SEL lesson in our Stepping Into Success class focuses on being an upstander to prevent bullying. Simply put, an upstander is someone who sees another person being mistreated and chooses to help rather than look the other way.
One thing we continue to see with students this age is their reluctance to tell an adult when something is happening because they don't want to be called a "snitch." Sometimes they're so worried about what their friends might think that they stay quiet, even when they know something isn't right.
We want our students to understand that there's a big difference between trying to get someone in trouble and telling someone because another person needs help. Speaking up when someone is being bullied, threatened, or mistreated isn't snitching. It's looking out for one another!
Parents, we could really use your help reinforcing this message at home. Remind your child that telling a trusted adult when someone is being hurt or mistreated is the right thing to do. They don't have to confront the person responsible or put themselves in an uncomfortable situation. Sometimes the best way to help is simply to let an adult know what's going on.
We want our students to be kind to one another, look out for each other, and have the courage to do what's right, even when it isn't the popular thing to do.
That's what being an upstander is all about, and it's another way we can WIN THE DAY!
