From Principal Lakin's Desk

Hello Davisburg Community,

I had the opportunity to be a part of my first Kindergarten Registration on Thursday night, and what a great turnout! It was so exciting to see all of our future Davisburg LEADers preparing to begin their journey in Kindergarten or Young 5s.

As much as Summer Break is a much-needed time to recharge, nights like these make me even more excited to begin the next school year as principal setting expectations for learning, behavior, and fun. Davisburg truly is a special place.

We had multiple stations for students and families to visit, including our outstanding PTC, latchkey program, preschool program, resources to help students begin writing their names, introductions to early math and reading skills, assistance with the registration process, and more.

A big shoutout to the amazing team that made the night possible: Ms. Learmont (Young 5s), Ms. Osmialowski (Kindergarten), Ms. Karrip (Kindergarten), Ms. Kolb (Kindergarten), Mrs. Corsaut (Academic Interventionist), and Mrs. Rauchfleisch (Academic Interventionist).

A special thank you as well to Mrs. Lang (our paraprofessional extraordinaire) and Mrs. Howe (Administrative Assistant and truly the heart of Davisburg Elementary) for everything they did to make the night such a success.

In this newsletter, you will see pictures of the first group of Davisburg students who were honored through our new Positive Referral system. When a staff member recognizes a student for demonstrating our LEAD expectations, the student is brought to my office where I read the referral aloud and share which staff member nominated them.

Students then get to choose a prize (chocolate, candy, or a fidget), have their picture taken for the newsletter, and take their referral home to share with their families.

I am incredibly excited about this new way to celebrate and recognize our Davisburg LEADers!

Today we had another amazing LEADer of the Month assembly, led by our student leadership team and Mrs. Corsaut. The mystery readers were revealed, with yours truly as the horse (most students already knew—lol!).

These assemblies are such a special moment for our building to come together and celebrate students who are making a positive difference in our school.

It is a privilege to serve as your principal, and I remain deeply committed to supporting our students, championing our outstanding staff, and strengthening our partnership with you, our families.

Thank you for your continued partnership. Enjoy the weekend, and fingers crossed for more sunshine and warmer weather in the very near future!

Mr. Lakin

Car Line Reminder: Keeping Everyone Safe & Moving Smoothly

As we continue working together to ensure a safe and efficient start and end to each school day, we wanted to send a friendly reminder about our car line procedures for drop-off and pick-up.

Morning Drop-Off:

  • Please enter the front car line loop and pull all the way forward to help keep traffic off Davisburg Road.
  • Once staff are outside, students may exit from the passenger side only.
  • For safety, parents should remain in their vehicles.
  • Students will walk directly to breakfast or head to their classrooms.

Afternoon Pick-Up:

  • Please remain in your vehicle and follow the car line to the designated loading area.
  • Be sure to display your family name sign in the front window to help us load students quickly and efficiently.
  • Students will wait in the designated area until their ride reaches the loading zone.
  • For safety and traffic flow, students will enter vehicles from the passenger side only.
  • Please note: Office pick-up is no longer available. All students will be dismissed through the car line or bus.

We truly appreciate your partnership in helping us maintain a safe, smooth, and efficient process for all of our students. Thank you for doing your part to support our Davisburg community!

Leader in Me & Core Competencies

Core Competency- Social Awareness

4 Tips for Families to Help Your Child Become More Socially Aware*

1. Empathy conversations

Pause while reading a book, watching a tv show, or watching a movie to talk. Discuss how the characters are feeling, what caused them to feel that way, and why they might feel that way. This is an easy activity that can be adapted to your daily routine.

2. Use empathetic language

Language choice is important when your child is developing empathy. Using “She’s having a hard time sharing her toys today” is more empathetic than “She’s being selfish”. Saying “That person is having a hard time using kind words today” is better than “They are being mean”.

3. Name and talk about feelings

Talking about feelings normalizes them and gives your children the ability to start to recognize them in themselves. Name the feelings that you are experiencing and talk about why you are experiencing them. Your child recognizing your feelings is the first step in them being able to recognize them in others.

4. Modeling

Model treating people with empathy, kindness, and respect. Your child will be learning about empathy and social awareness in school, but you have a much greater influence. They will be looking to you to see it modeled in the real world. Be cognizant of what you say and do around your children.
