What Parents Need to Know: Our Updated Field Trip Process
We have updated our field trip procedures to streamline communication and improve the administrative process for families. Please review the key details below:
One-Time Blanket Permission: Parents provide consent for all field trips during Annual Online Registration, covering the entire academic year (July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027).
Automatic Opt-In Status: Once online registration is completed, students are automatically opted-in for scheduled field trips.
Managing Specific Trips: Upon receiving notification of an upcoming trip, log into the Infinite Campus Parent Portal and visit the School Store to submit payments or opt out of that specific event.
Strict Deadlines: All payments and opt-out requests must be completed at least two weeks prior to the trip date. For extenuating circumstances, please contact your school secretary promptly.
Mandatory Registration: Completing Annual Online Registration is required for field trip participation. Students with incomplete registrations will not appear in the School Store system.
If you need technical support or require alternative arrangements, please contact your child's school secretary.
From the Counselor's Office......
Greetings Oaklawn Families!
My name is Kristin Urban, and I am pleased to introduce myself as your student’s new school counselor at Oaklawn Elementary School. This is my 20th year as a school counselor, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have so many years of getting to know students and supporting them, sometimes in their most difficult moments. I have spent the past seven years as the school counselor at Read Elementary School here in Oshkosh. Prior to that I was a high school counselor in southwestern Wisconsin, in both Middleton and Spring Green. In my free time I enjoy getting outside to do something active, like running, biking, gardening or camping. My husband and I also love cheering on my two teenage sons in their various sports and activities. I also enjoy cheering on the Packers and volunteering at my church.
Here are some of the key parts of my role as school counselor:
Teach Classroom Lessons - every other week for 25 minutes (K-5)
Small Group Counseling (ex: healthy friendships, emotional regulation, etc.)
Individual Counseling
Collaborate with teachers, parents/guardians, and outside agencies
If you’d like to talk with me further or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I am very excited to be part of the Oaklawn school family, and I look forward to meeting you and your child!
Sincerely,
Kristin Urban
School Counselor
Free/Reduces Lunch Application
Even though lunch and breakfast are free for all students, families should still fill out the application if they think they would qualify.
Oaklawn is part of a district wide grant to provide free breakfast and lunch to each student. Students are able to enter the school at 7:15am and get breakfast in the cafeteria. We still need families to fill out the Free/Reduced Meals application if they think they qualify. Families who qualify will get assistance for their child's field trips and sometimes state funding, grant money, etc use the statistics for free/reduced student counts. Food Department has sent letters to those families who have qualified for Free/Reduced Meals. If you didn’t get a letter and you think your family would qualify please complete the Free/Reduced Application form. The application is located in your IC Parent Portal under the “More” tab at the bottom then click on “Meal Benefits”. If you have any questions please call Mrs. Schiefelbein in the office. Link
Drop Off & Pick Up During Construction
Important: Upcoming Drop-Off & Pick-Up Changes Starting Sept. 8
Dear Oaklawn Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to the new school year! As we get ready for the first day of school on Tuesday, September 1, please note an upcoming road construction project. This will temporarily change our drop-off and pick-up routines starting the second week of school, September 7.
Key Dates to Remember
Sept. 1-4 (First Week of School): Regular drop-off and pick-up routines.
Sept. 7 – Oct. 9 (Construction Window): New drop-off and pick-up routines start..
Starting Monday, September 7, the City of Oshkosh and Vinton Construction will begin road work on Linwood Avenue (the north side of our school). During this time, Linwood Avenue will be closed to all parent traffic. Only school buses and Boys & Girls Club vehicles will be allowed to use Linwood Avenue during drop-off (7:10 - 7:40 AM) and pick-up (2:20 - 3 PM).
What to Do Starting Monday, September 7
All parents and guardians dropping off or picking up students must use Viola Avenue (the south side of our school). Traffic will be heavier than usual, so please plan for extra time and follow these safety rules:
Option 1: Visitor Parking Lot - East Side by Flagpole & Door #1 - If you pull into the visitor parking lot, you must park in a designated stall to let your student in or out. Dropping off in the middle of the parking lot is extremely dangerous and blocks traffic.
Option 2: Express Drop-Off Zone - Door #2 by the Sunflowers - Fastest Option (See page 2 of this letter for photos of the Express Drop-Off setup.) - Drive all the way past the crosswalk and past the Loading Zone Sign before letting students out.
Students must get out on the sidewalk side and walk to the playground area.
Drivers must stay inside the vehicle at all times in this lane.
Keep the crosswalk clear: Do not park, stop, or drop off before or inside the crosswalk. Drivers need a clear line of sight to see students crossing.
Thank you for your help in keeping our students and families safe during this project!
Sincerely,
Mr. Scott W. Johanknecht - Oaklawn Elementary Principal
