Baldwin High School’s Law Academy and Senior Experience program participated in the unique “Leaving2Learn” called “Justice for All: Courts and the Community Initiative,” the civic education project of the federal courts for the Second Circuit. The students visited the Central Islip courthouse, the second largest courthouse in the country, which accommodates the District Court, the Bankruptcy Court, Pretrial Services and Probation Department, the U.S. Marshal's Service, U.S. Attorney's Offices and multiple State Court offices. There, they met with federal judge, the Honorable Joseph Bianco, to learn about the court system, interact with a representative of the U.S. Marshal’s Service and engage in a mini-mock trial activity within the actual courtroom.

Second Graders Learn Financial Literacy and More Through Student-Produced Business Pitched to Baldwin "Shark Tank"

During a Shark Tank-inspired assembly, Brookside Elementary School second graders successfully presented their innovative business venture, "Second Aide Entrepreneurs," to a panel of 'sharks' in order to secure funding for their lemonade stand, which will raise money for the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation in support of pediatric cancer research. Following their persuasive presentation, which included a student-produced commercial, the students immediately received more than $250 in donations from families and staff in attendance. This student-led endeavor is in line with the district's "Baldwin 2035" initiative and garnered attention from media outlets, including Newsday, Newsday TV, and News 12. Their business officially opens this Friday, February 2 during lunch time.

This project provided a deeper learning experience for students and is directly tied to their unit of study on financial literacy. Additional skills developed encompassed the district's six "C's" for learning: communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, character and civics
