Hello Westwood Schools families,

Thank you to everyone who participated in our PTO fundraiser. We had great success and your support makes a difference for our students throughout the year. Be sure to read our PTO section below for more details.

Thank you for sharing your experiences in our latest pulse check. We were very happy to see that 96 percent of those responding were happy with their Westwood experience. Members of our community also shared the following:

  • Praise for caring, supportive teachers who understand students' individual needs and help them feel valued and encouraged
  • Appreciation for consistent, helpful communication from teachers that keeps families informed and involved in their children's learning
  • Gratitude for efforts to reduce iPad use during classroom learning
  • Feedback about the school schedule, including staggered start times, the timing of school breaks, and scheduling challenges for families with multiple children. There are many factors that go into scheduling the school day and we’re always looking at what we can do. I will also be sharing suggestions around after school activities with our community education team.
  • Input on strengthening classroom management and ensuring consistent consequences for student behavior that disrupts learning. Specific to this topic, we are currently working with our behavior team to put together plans for some of our students who are struggling. In addition, we are in the process of reviewing the data to determine additional classroom supports and responses.

Please know that we share your praise and appreciation with our staff and are considering all your feedback. Thank you for taking the time to participate in these occasional pulse checks.

Have a great week,

Tom Larson

Test of district notification system happening November 12

On Thursday, November 12, at 6:30 p.m., Spring Lake Park Schools will test its notification system to ensure families can receive important updates. The system is used for district and school news, school closings or delays and emergency information. Make sure your contact information and communication preferences are up to date.

Depending on your preferences, you may receive an email, text, voicemail and/or push notification through the SLP mobile app.

Save our phone numbers! Calls and texts from the district may show up as “Potential Spam” if the numbers aren’t saved in your contacts. Save these numbers so you can recognize district communications:

  • Voicemail (regular and emergency): 763-600-5539
  • Text (regular messages): 763-634-6155
  • Text (emergency messages): 763-402-7589

If you don’t receive the test message as expected or need to update your contact information, visit our Stay Connected page and look for “Update contact information and communication preferences” for step-by-step directions. Questions? Email communications@district16.org.

Panther Pride on Display in W109!

Ganske Panther Time students brought creativity, teamwork, and Panther pride to life with their amazing decorating contest submission! Each balloon represents one of our school pillars, with students contributing sticky notes sharing examples of how they can demonstrate each pillar in their daily lives. A special shout-out to Katherine, Thu, Larissa, and Avery, who worked hard to bring everyone's ideas together into this colorful, mixed-media masterpiece! Be sure to check out their fantastic creation on display in the hallway outside W109!

8th Grade Scientists Explore Density and Critical Thinking

Our 8th-grade A Team students have been exploring density as part of their chemistry unit! Through hands-on learning, students are gathering information to develop scientific claims, identify evidence to support their findings, and use scientific vocabulary and concepts to explain their reasoning. This process, known as Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER), strengthens critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills across all subject areas. While these skills may look different from classroom to classroom, they demonstrate the meaningful interdisciplinary connections happening every day at Westwood!

Celebrating Día de los Muertos in Spanish Class

Profe Duffy’s and Profe Dulka’s classes explored the rich cultural traditions of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) through a creative, hands-on activity! Students made colorful paper cempasúchil (marigold) flowers, which are an important symbol of this Mexican tradition honoring and remembering loved ones who have passed away.

Make It Matter: Creativity, Collaboration, and Innovation

What makes something valuable? Students put their creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills to the test during an engaging learning activity called “Make It Matter.” Armed with just a cup, an index card, a paperclip, 12 inches of string, and 12 inches of tape, students were challenged to design a product that people would want or need. Their inventions could solve a problem, save time, make life easier, bring enjoyment, or help people connect.

Working in small groups, students brainstormed ideas, built prototypes, and developed persuasive pitches to explain why their creations mattered. Taking on the roles of both inventors and marketers, they showcased their innovative thinking and communication skills.

Bringing Math to Life with 3D Shapes!

Our Westwood students have been exploring 3D shapes and nets in math, putting their learning into action through engaging, hands-on activities! Using 3D shape models, students challenged themselves to apply mathematical concepts, solve problems, and explain their thinking. These activities encouraged critical thinking, creativity, and a deeper understanding of how two-dimensional shapes come together to form three-dimensional objects.
