Something to Think About

Parent -teacher conferences are happening this month. This is a perfect opportunity to strengthen the bridge between home and school. Here are a few tips.

  • Before. Watch for notices in your email or your youngster’s backpack, and sign up for a time slot. Also, prepare ahead of time by looking over your child’s work and listing questions you want to ask.
  • During. Listen to the teacher’s feedback on how your youngster is doing, then ask your questions. Be sure to have the teacher explain anything you don’t understand.
  • After. Talk with your child about the conference. Point out what she’s doing well (reading more challenging books, finishing classwork) and areas that need improvement (writing legibly, taking turns).

Food in the Classroom

We have experienced a few situations where parents brought food treats to school (usually birthday celebrations) to be shared in the classroom, but had to be turned away due to certain food restrictions. If your child's teacher allows food in the classroom, please adhere to these requirements in order to protect our students with food allergies.

  • Food items that contain ANY type of NUTS, or products that were manufactured in a facility that shares equipment with nuts/handles nuts, are not permitted in ANY classroom
  • Homemade baked goods/food is not permitted in any classroom
  • Check with your child's teacher to find out what foods are allowed in his/her classroom. This may be different for every classroom, depending on the food allergies in each classroom.
  • Closely look at ingredient labels on food packages for this list of allergens.
  • If buying baked goods from a store or bakery, there must be a label on the container that lists any allergens. If there is no label, we cannot allow that food in the classroom.
  • If you are unsure if a food item is safe for your child's class, please reach out to your teacher. You can also send a picture of the ingredient label to the teacher to confirm the food is safe.

School Counselor's Update

Hello Goshen families,

It's been a couple months since my last update. In guidance all students have been working on expressing gratitude, practicing conflict resolution, self-reflection, growth mindset, positive sense of self and this month we will be working on mindfulness.

As a reminder, my role is to support students and families with social emotional needs, short term counseling for students, provide referrals for outside resources and support during life changes. Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions, concerns or if you are looking for referrals and resources. cellarl@gjps.org or 614.643.0787.

This school year is going so quickly and it is such a joy watching all of our students learn and grow as individuals. Thank you for allowing us to be part of their journey.
