Proviso East HighSchool NewsletterFriday, October 9, 2026

Dear Proviso East Families,

As we wrap up the first quarter, I want to thank you for your partnership and the trust you place in us each day. We share the same hope for our students: that they grow academically, feel supported, and know they belong. Your involvement helps us make that possible.

Please take a few moments to review your student’s grades and attendance together. Celebrate what is going well and talk about where support may be needed. If there are missing assignments or concerns about progress, please connect with their teachers so we can work together on next steps. We want every student to finish this quarter strong and begin the next with confidence. October also gives us an opportunity to reflect on how we care for one another.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we honor those facing breast cancer, celebrate survivors, and remember those we have lost. We also recognize the families, friends, and caregivers walking alongside loved ones. For many in our Proviso East community, this is deeply personal. It reminds us to extend grace, check on one another, and remember that we may not always know what someone is going through.

Unity Day brings another important reminder: every student deserves to feel safe, accepted, and valued. Standing together against bullying means paying attention to how we treat others each day. It means making room for someone who feels left out, choosing kind words, respecting differences, and speaking up when someone is being hurt.

I ask that you continue these conversations at home. Remind your student that their words and actions matter, and that asking a trusted adult for help is a sign of strength. Together, we can help our students understand that they have a role in making Proviso East a place where everyone belongs.

Stay Connected Through PowerSchool and Schoology

One of the easiest ways to stay connected to your student’s progress is to make PowerSchool and Schoology part of your weekly routine. PowerSchool gives you a snapshot of your student’s grades, attendance, and academic progress. If you have questions about your student’s academic performance, you can also contact their teachers directly by clicking the staff member’s name in PowerSchool. Schoology keeps you connected to what’s happening in the classroom, including assignments, resources, and teacher updates.

Taking a few minutes each week to check both platforms can help you catch concerns early, celebrate progress, and make sure your student is keeping up with assignments and deadlines. Checking in with your student about what they’re working on, what’s going well, or where they may need support can also help them stay organized and take ownership of their learning.

Keeping an Eye on the BAG Report

Our Behavior, Attendance, and Grades (BAG) Report gives us another way to look at the whole student and identify where additional support may be needed. By looking at behavior, attendance, and grades together, our team can be proactive, address concerns early, and connect students with the support they need. It also gives us an opportunity to recognize students who are making positive choices and showing progress.

Thank you for being part of our school community. Please know that we are here to support your student and your family. I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside you as we help our students learn, grow, and move forward.

One East, One Team, One Purpose.

Warmly,

Schoology

Atentamente,

Allyson Fox-Crump

Your Voice Matters! Join Our District ELA Curriculum Review Committee Your Voice Matters! Join Our District ELA Curriculum Review Committee

Dear Proviso Families,

We are inviting parents, students, and teachers to join a district committee that will review our English Language Arts (ELA) reading program and help determine whether we should continue with Savvas or select a different program. Led by Rubi Ortiz, this committee will bring together perspectives from across our schools to recommend materials that support strong instruction and meet our students’ learning needs. Our goal, if possible, is to bring a recommendation to the Board of Education this spring.

The committee will help select the instructional materials we intend to use for the next six years. We will examine our current program, consider student learning needs, explore alternatives, and gather feedback about how well each option supports challenging, engaging, and accessible reading and writing instruction. Parents do not need curriculum expertise to participate. Your experiences supporting your children’s learning will provide an important perspective.

The proposed selection process will include:

  1. Establish shared criteria. Identify what students need from an ELA program, including alignment with Illinois Learning Standards, appropriately challenging texts, diverse literary perspectives, strong reading and writing instruction, and support for multilingual learners and students with disabilities.

  2. Review our current experience. Gather teacher, student, and family feedback about Savvas, examine available student learning and implementation information, and identify strengths and gaps.

  3. Evaluate potential programs. Review Savvas alongside a manageable number of alternatives using common criteria, sample materials, and publisher demonstrations. Programs considered should also have strong independent reviews from curriculum experts, such as EdReports.

  4. Gather classroom and community feedback. Arrange coordinated opportunities for teachers and students to examine or try sample lessons, and for parents to review materials and share their perspectives.

  5. Develop a recommendation. Compare instructional quality, accessibility, ease of use, teacher training needs, technology requirements, and total cost. Develop a recommendation and proposed transition timeline for administrative review and Board consideration.

Parent and student input will extend beyond those serving on the committee. We plan to use surveys and structured listening sessions to hear from families and students across all three schools. Students will be asked about engagement, relevance, level of challenge, accessibility, and how well the materials support their development as readers and writers. Parents will have opportunities to share what they observe about their children’s reading experiences, access to materials, and ability to support learning at home.

As the committee narrows the options, families and students will have additional opportunities to review sample resources and provide feedback using common questions. Translation and interpretation will be provided as needed. The committee will consider this input alongside teacher feedback, instructional evidence, and its evaluation criteria when developing the recommendation.

Committee members should expect to attend scheduled meetings, review materials between meetings, and contribute thoughtful feedback. Rubi Ortiz will share the schedule, anticipated time commitment, and participation details as the committee is organized.

Throughout this review, teachers will continue implementing our current adopted curriculum in alignment with district curriculum maps, which outline what students are expected to learn and the sequence of instruction. This expectation will also remain in place during the coming school year, regardless of which program is selected. Any change in materials will follow a district-established transition timeline that includes preparation, professional learning, and communication with families.

This review also supports the proposed District Strategic Plan, which will be presented to the Board of Education for approval at the next Board meeting. It connects our focus on rigorous instruction with meaningful collaboration among educators, students, and families. Your participation will help us make an informed decision that reflects our students’ needs and supports consistent learning expectations across our schools.

If you or your student would like to join the committee, please email both Rubi Ortiz at rortiz@pths209.org and me at kmohip@pths209.org. One of us will follow up with participation details.

Thank you for helping us shape the future of ELA teaching and learning across Proviso.

¡Tu voz importa! Únete a nuestro Comité de ¡Tu voz importa! Únete a nuestro Comité de

Revisión del Currículo de Lengua y Literatura del Distrito. Revisión del Currículo de Lengua y Literatura del Distrito.

Estimadas familias de Proviso::

Headphone and Cellphone Reminder Headphone and Cellphone Reminder

To Our Valued Proviso East Community

During my recent classroom visits across the District, I have observed students wearing headphones or using cell phones during instructional time. As we continue working together to create positive and productive learning environments, I want to reinforce our shared expectations and the importance of minimizing classroom distractions.

Our Focus: Supporting Teaching and Learning

Students are expected to follow staff directions when asked to remove headphones or put away cell phones during instruction. These expectations help ensure that every student can remain engaged and that teachers can focus on delivering meaningful instruction.

When students need additional reminders or support, staff will follow a consistent process:

  • Teachers will first ask students to remove headphones or put away cell phones.

  • If a student does not comply, security will assist by speaking with the student outside the classroom and requesting the device.

  • Once the device is surrendered, the student may return to class, and the device will be held in the Dean's Office until the end of the school day.

  • If a student continues to refuse, the matter will be referred to the Dean's Office for additional follow-up.

Our goal is not simply compliance, but collaboration, accountability, and a shared commitment to student success. We want students to understand how their choices contribute to a respectful learning environment while ensuring instructional time remains uninterrupted.

Families, your partnership is essential. We encourage you to discuss these expectations with your students and reinforce the importance of being present, engaged, and respectful of classroom expectations.

By working together, we can maintain learning environments where students feel supported, teachers can teach effectively, and everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

Hello Class of 2027 Parents and Guardians,

My name is Ms. Clayton-Taylor, and I am the Class of 2027 Senior Sponsor. I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself and share a few important updates about what is happening with the Class of 2027.

We are now just one week away from the end of your student’s last first quarter of high school. Proviso East is preparing to host an Early Voting Day on Thursday, October 15, 2026, as part of the Early Voting High School Program. This special opportunity will allow eligible students and staff to participate in the voting process right here at school.

Voter Registration Opportunity on October 14.15, and 16th

We look forward to welcoming representatives from Glen Ellyn Area Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc to conduct nonpartisan voter registration and voter education activities during lunch periods. The purpose is to provide eligible students with information about civic participation, the voter registration process, and the importance of exercising their right to vote. The activities will remain strictly nonpartisan and educational.

Who Can Vote on October 15?

Students, staff, and faculty who meet the eligibility requirements may cast a ballot during Early Voting Day. Parents and members of the public will not be permitted to vote at the school site.

To be eligible to vote, a student must:

  • Be a Suburban Cook County resident
  • Be 18 years old on or before November 3, 2026
  • Be registered to vote, or complete same-day voter registration if not already registered
  • Provide two forms of identification, with at least one showing the voter's current address, if completing same-day registration

Preparing Our Next Generation of Voters

This Cook County program provides students with an opportunity to learn about the voting process and participate in civic life. By creating opportunities for eligible students to register and vote, we can help strengthen civic engagement, encourage voter participation, and empower the next generation of voters. We encourage families to talk with eligible students about voter registration and the importance of participating in the democratic process. Additional information about Early Voting Day will be shared with students and families as we get closer to October 15.

Hobbs a chobbs@pths209.org.

Empowering Parents. Enhancing Student Success. Strengthening Our School & Community.

At Proviso East High School, we believe parents and guardians should have a voice in what happens at our school. When families and schools work together, our students benefit.

As a school that receives Title I funds, Proviso East is committed to meaningful family involvement. This means giving parents and guardians opportunities to learn about our Title I program, share their ideas, ask questions, and provide input that can help improve our school and support student success.

Empoderando a los padres. Mejorando el éxito estudiantil. Fortaleciendo nuestra escuela y comunidad.

🌎 WRAPPING UP HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

As we wrap up Hispanic Heritage Month, a HUGE shoutout to Raza Unidas, Ms. Rodriguez and Ms. Collins, and everyone who helped put together our Hispanic Heritage Assembly! Thank you for sharing the music, traditions, stories, and cultures that make our East community special.

Hispanic Heritage Month may be coming to an end, but celebrating the cultures represented at East doesn’t stop when the month ends. Our students and families bring their languages, traditions, histories, food, music, experiences, and identities into our building every single day. And that is part of what makes East, East. Let’s continue learning from one another, celebrating one another, and making sure every Pirate feels like their culture belongs here. 💙🌎

Kindness. Acceptance. Inclusion. Unity. Kindness. Acceptance. Inclusion. Unity.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and Proviso East is proud to recognize Unity Day, a nationwide movement that encourages us to stand together against bullying and create a school community where everyone feels safe, respected, valued, and included.

Founded in 2011 by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, Unity Day reminds us that even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Whether it's welcoming someone new, standing up for a classmate, or choosing kindness when it matters most, we all have a role in creating a positive school culture.

🧡 WEAR ORANGE TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT!

We encourage our Pirates, staff, and families to wear orange as a visible symbol of unity and our shared commitment to bullying prevention.

At Proviso East, we don't just talk about unity. We build it through our actions, our words, and the way we treat one another.

💙 One School. One Community. United Against Bullying.

Amabilidad. Aceptación. Inclusión. Unidad. Amabilidad. Aceptación. Inclusión. Unidad.
