Observing the world around us, we are noticing changes that contrast with our memories of earlier days both of us experienced in California. Frequent and prolonged Santa Ana wind conditions. Extended fire "season". King tides just a little bit bigger each year. Heavier one-time rain dumps breaking up months and months of drought.

Call for entries: “Art of the Immune System” Competition

The La Jolla Institute for Immunology (LJI) invites San Diego County students grades 9-12 to enter the Art of the Immune System Student Competition.

LJI is a research institute in San Diego where creative researchers and staff come together to solve big problems in immune system research. Scientists here study diseases such as COVID-19, Ebola, type 1 diabetes, cancers, allergies and much more.

This art competition is a chance for local high school students to learn about immune system research and inspire others to see the beauty in science!

Salk Institutes SciChats

Welcome back to school! Salk Institute has been eagerly awaiting the return to school and our SciChats @ Salk. SciChats are a free and unique opportunity to bring a scientist into your classroom virtually. SciChats’ mission is to function as an interactive learning experience for students and a hands-on communication exercise for scientists.

Your students will be able to learn about current research, what life looks like as a scientist, and how they too can become a scientist. If you and your students are interested in a specific topic, let us know! We might have the perfect fit for you.

Request a SciChat for your classroom or alternative learning here: https://bit.ly/scichat2021

If you have additional questions, please reach out through our email, education@salk.edu

Live Stream from the World Climate Summit, COP26

Join CIRES Education & Outreach on November 9th at 10am MT as we stream LIVE from the world climate summit, COP26, in Glasgow, Scotland with Gina Fiorile and Maxwell Boykoff.

This 40-minute virtual session will include a 20-minute talk on what the Conference of Parties (COP) is and how it works, what the science tells us, and what actions we hope will come out of this year’s COP26 meeting in Glasgow. We will also be connecting with Gina Fiorile directly from Glasgow to hear about her experience of what COP26 is like, how young people can play a role in COP, and what she is most inspired by for our future. The talk will be followed by a live Q&A session. We invite your students to ask questions and engage with CIRES scientists! Register here.

SDG&E Donors Choose

Through a partnership with DonorsChoose, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has set aside $250,000 in shareholder funding to help local educators supplement classroom education with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) projects. This is the second year that SDG&E has expanded the program to support needs caused by the pandemic, such as supplies that can no longer be shared among students or equipment needed for distance learning.

Teachers at public schools within SDG&E’s service territory can apply and view the matched projects at the link. Eligible projects at schools in disadvantaged communities as defined by CalEnviroScreen will have donations to their projects matched with $2 for every $1 that they raise. The campaign will run until funds are exhausted.
