Worthingway Weekly February 13, 2025

Principal's Message Principal's Message

At Worthingway, celebrating and honoring who we are as individuals and our different cultures is important. Our school is home to students that have diverse background experiences and cultures. This is what makes us who we are - it makes us better/stronger as a school community. In order to "empower a community of learners who will change the world" we need to learn about, understand, and celebrate the depths and variety of what makes each one of us special. One way we do this is through the curriculum. Specifically, February is an important time for us to reflect and learn about all of the ways that Black individuals and groups have contributed positively to our history and achievements.

Some examples of this in the classroom are:

  • TEDed Tuesday in Social Studies class to learn about influential people during Black History Month and Women's History Month
  • Reading Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom in ELA class and writing an essay analyzing the development of theme
  • Reading an informational text and watching a short video in Global Thinkers about Black history makers and changers along.
  • Engaging in a poetry unit in ELA on famous poets and musicians throughout history
  • Learning about Gee's Bend quiltmakers in Art class

We are also excited to share that on May 2, we will be hosting a building-wide "Culture Day." The idea for this was inspired by a few students who brought it to our teachers earlier this year. One of my favorite days/experiences as assistant principal at TWHS was the Culture Day that the students organized and led, so I am pumped that we have an interested group of students at Worthingway that are motivated to do something like this in our building. Our students and teachers are collaborating to plan this valuable event.

We will share more information about this as we get closer to May, but for now please check out the video that we will be sharing with students soon.

  • Student Safety is our top priority. Please be mindful of our walkers and bike riders (we have bike racks on our bus drop off side). If you exit on the Guyer Street side, please yield to crossing students AND incoming buses.
  • Doors open at 8:50 for student drop off. Students will be instructed to remain in the cafeteria or gym until 9:02. Classes begin at 9:10 and end at 3:50.
  • We ask families to pull all the way forward to the end of our main lot at pick up time. Cars that stop at the front doors can create backups that extend onto Rieber St.
