Between Camp SPARTA and morning Advisory alone, our students spend about 40 hours a year with their Advisory teacher! This is a pivotal time to connect with kids and start their day on a successful, positive note. A normal week of Advisory that meets every day should include the above activities/tasks. Teams have the flexibility to personalize this and create a plan to fit their needs, but teachers within the team should be on the same page. Here is the link to the slide that you can copy and make your own.

Shout Outs

Mr. Tinnin observed some Explorers classrooms last Friday, and his notes demonstrate there was intentional bell-to-bell engagement. Well done, Explorers!

I thought his notes gave a helpful breakdown of time and instructional strategies that was worth sharing.

8:15 - Students choose Silent Ball for their activity.

  • Students make a big circle around the room.
  • Nobody talks.
  • They begin throwing a wad of paper to each other.
  • If you miss or have a bad throw you sit.
  • Students are smiling.
  • Dean is the ref ruling on bad throws and catchable balls.
  • Elliot Hesler was the champion.

8:19 - Silent Ball Round 2

Ms. Busshaus' 1st Period Science Class

28 Students

8:28 - Bell Ringer

  • Students enter the room and retrieve their binders from the shelf.
  • Direct Instruction: The Newline board displays a bell ringer periodic table scavenger hunt.
  • "Voices at a zero" "we're seeing if you can sit by your friends"

8:36 - Review of Today's Agenda

  • Review the 3 states of matter
  • Solid, liquid, gas
  • Choral read of today's goal
  • Manipulatives vs. Models
  • Busshaus displays a class point competition. 1st period is winning with 61 points. Points lead to a quarter celebration.
  • Busshaus reviews what "shoulder partners are" and transitions to student-talk-routine with a timer during which students discuss solids, liquids, and gases.

8:45

  • Busshaus uses kinesthetic miming techniques to symbolize mass and space as students use the same motion.
  • Busshaus demonstrates the difference between a model and a manipulative

8:47

  • Busshaus launches students into a 30 second group challenge to arrange their manipulatives at their table.
  • Busshaus pays many compliments to the class for doing well. She puts a one-minute timer up for students to predict what the particles of a solid would look like when they are a solid. Class point to every person who predicts correctly!

8:53

  • Busshaus uses Newline pen to highlight student contributions to Q&A
  • She forms manipulative magnets to show "solid particles tightly packed"
  • Students use the Newline board and Busshaus's demonstration to complete a graphic organizer for their binder.

9:02

  • Busshaus guides students through a kinesthetic miming technique in which the student's hands represent particle behavior.

9:14

  • Students journal in their binder as Busshaus coaches them on how to organize their binders.
