Digital Citizenship
Tech Tip Tuesday (October 1, 2024)
They'll learn it in another class, right?
In today's digitally interconnected world, digital citizenship has become a fundamental skill. This is particularly important in educational settings, where students need to learn how to navigate the online landscape safely and responsibly.
But's there's too much.
You're right, there's no way.
Here are 3 quick ways to improve digital citizenship in your class weekly or daily!
#1: Show how you would send an email to someone
To help students become better communicators, model effective email writing. Demonstrate the steps involved, encourage clear and concise language, and emphasize the importance of proofreading. By practicing these skills, students will improve their communication abilities.

#2: Say where you got your information.
No, I don't need an MLA, APA, or Chicago citation for everything. However, showing where you got your source or giving photo credit can help model to adequately give credit. It also helps teach the basics of media literacy, the ability to critically analyze and evaluate media messages, understanding their underlying messages, techniques, and potential biases. This is HUGE for the Age of AI and evaluating information.
You can always teach media lit explicitly using PBS Learning Media or Ithaca College's Project Look Sharp throughout the year or before you dive into a research unit!
#3: Talk about ways that you decrease your screen and online time.
By promoting healthy technology habits, we can help students harness the benefits of digital tools while minimizing the risks. Yes, the tech guy is saying to model how you're putting away the tech.
