ENGAGED COMMUNITY
Principal's Message
Dear Ross Glen Families,
As we head into May, we are reminded that this time of year is not only about growth and learning, but also about recognizing the importance of well-being, kindness, and connection. These values strengthen our school community and help create a positive environment where students can thrive.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership and support, it truly makes a meaningful difference in the success of our school. As a small way of saying thank you, we are excited to welcome families to Muffins in May. Families are invited to bring their child(ren) to school and enjoy a muffin and drink together in the gym from 7:30–8:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 14. Please complete the Google Form as an RSVP. Please RSVP by Monday, May 11th.
We also look forward to coming together for our Community and Cookies Walk on Wednesday, May 6. We will meet at the front of the school just before 6:30 p.m., head out for a walk together as a school community at 6:30, and then return to the school to enjoy a cookie together.
We hope you can join us for one, or both, of these special opportunities to connect. Thank you for being such an important part of our school community.
With May comes planning for the year ahead. It is with mixed emotions that we share that Miss Fedorak will be moving to Red Deer, where she will be teaching Grade 3 next year. While we are truly sad to see her leave our school community, we are grateful for the care, dedication, and positive impact she has had on our students. We wish Miss Fedorak all the very best as she begins this exciting new adventure.
We encourage families to stay connected, review important upcoming dates, and reach out if you have questions or need support.
Take care,
Natosha
April's Exemplary Students
Each month, we celebrate students who go above and beyond in demonstrating our school’s core values of Wonder, Connect, and Thrive. For April, we are proud to recognize our Exemplary Students, who have shown us what it means to live out these values every day.
Wonder – These students approach their learning with curiosity and excitement. They ask thoughtful questions, explore new ideas, and show a genuine love for discovering the world around them.
Connect – They build strong relationships by showing kindness, respect, and empathy. Whether working with classmates, helping a peer in need, or showing appreciation for staff, they remind us of the importance of caring for one another.
Thrive – These students demonstrate resilience and a positive mindset. They take on challenges with determination, celebrate growth, and set a wonderful example of what it looks like to be the best version of themselves.
We are so proud of our April Exemplary Students and the way they inspire our school community. Congratulations to each of you for modeling what it means to Wonder, Connect, and Thrive!
Important Dates
Extra-Curricular Activities
Grade 4-6 Student Leadership
Miss Fedorak leads the Grades 4-6 Student Leadership. They meet weekly to develop fun activities for the school and to decide on Dress-Up Day themes.
1) Root Beer Float sales will take place on May 7th for $2 each, and they will be delivered to students on Friday, May 8th, during lunch.
2) May's theme, on May 14th, is "Movie Character Day". The student leadership group will select a winner from grades 1-3 and a winner from grades 4-6.
3) Get ready for a fun way to support our student leadership! From May 25–27, or until sold out, students are invited to take part in our Tat a Teacher Fundraiser. For a small donation, students can purchase a temporary tattoo and choose a volunteer staff member to proudly wear it. Tattoos range in price from 25¢ to $1, depending on the size. It’s a lighthearted event that will bring lots of smiles while raising funds for a great cause, don’t miss out! The staff members will be tatted up for the Spirit Day assembly on May 29th.
Apple School
What is an Apple School?
As an Apple School, we strive to build a healthy school community focusing on improving students' mental health, physical activity, and eating habits for life.
May's Campaign
May's campaign is Colour Your World with Veggies, and students will learn about including a variety of colourful foods into their meals. The home challenge is "Colour your World with Fruits and Vegetables", where they are challenged to eat fruits and vegetables of various colours.
Here is a summary of the learnings:
Variety is the Spice of Life Vegetables and fruit come in all colours of the rainbow that represent health-promoting powers.
Red: promotes heart health.
Yellow and orange: may reduce the risk of some cancers.
White: supports healthy cholesterol levels.
Green: supports vision health.
Blue and purple: may help maintain memory.
You can reduce the risk of heart disease, certain types of cancers, and other chronic diseases by following Canada’s Food Guide, limiting foods and beverages high in sugar, fat, and calories; and choosing a variety of vegetables and fruits.
Each day, try adding colourful, health-promoting vegetables and fruits to your meals and tracking how many colours are on your plate.
Tips for eating more vegetables and fruit:
● Choose two or more servings of vegetables and fruit at each meal
● Slice fresh fruit into breakfast cereal or yogurt
● At lunch or supper, add a salad made from spinach or lettuce. Top it off with chopped vegetables or fruit like kiwi, apple, strawberries and raisins
● Keep washed and sliced carrots, celery, peppers, zucchini, or cucumber in the fridge for a quick snack or to add to a lunch bag
● Add fresh or frozen vegetables to spaghetti sauce, soups, stews, chilli, casseroles, or frozen meals. Double up on vegetables in these recipes
● Grab easy on-the-go fruit snacks like bananas, apples, pears, oranges, and grapes3
Serving Recommendations? Try to fill half your plate with vegetables and fruit at every meal. Reference: 1 http://www.dole.com/superkids 2 https://www.canada.ca/en/services/health/healthy-eating.html 3 http://www.albertahealthservices.ca

Playground Update
We are beyond excited to share that our new playground equipment is scheduled to be installed starting on Thursday, July 2nd. This would not be possible without the incredible dedication and work of our School Council and Parent Association. Thank you to all of our families as well for supporting the many fundraisers over the past several years. In addition to fundraising, we have been awarded significant grants from the Government of Alberta (CFEP Grant-$125,000), the City of Medicine Hat (Capital Grant-$95,000), and the Education Foundation ($7500). All of these funds, along with in-kind donations of labour and services from local businesses, including the International Petroleum Corporation and LMT Enterprises, have helped to make this project a reality. As we wrap up fundraising efforts, we will be sure to recognize all donors.
A note to families that the expiring and old equipment will be removed from the playground area on Saturday, June 6th. This will include removing large quantities of pea gravel that will be stored on the tarmac and grass area near the swings. Fencing will be installed around the impacted area of the playground and the gravel piles to ensure student and community safety. Please also have conversations with your children, reminding them to stay away from the construction areas.
As we head into this exciting and busy start to summer, please watch for information that will be shared by our Playground Planning Committee, as we will require many parent volunteers to help install the new equipment. This volunteer help is critical, and we want to express our appreciation in advance to all who donate their time and energy to the project in July.
Thank you again to all of our families. We have accomplished this together!
