Principal's Message
Dear Boyd Families,
I am very excited about the work we are doing and the plans we have to educate, support, and inspire our scholars this year. As we work toward our school improvement goals and the Moonshot of all students reading on grade level by 2030, we know we cannot do this work alone. We need our parents, guardians, families, and loved ones partnering with us every step of the way.
This year, our framework for improvement focuses on our ABCs: Academics, Attendance, Behavior, and Climate & Culture. By focusing on these key areas, we can support the whole child—helping our scholars grow academically, socially, and personally as they develop into tomorrow’s leaders.
Please take time to read this newsletter in its entirety. Along with our regular updates and reminders, you will learn more about each area of our ABC Framework and specific ways you can partner with us by reinforcing learning, expectations, and positive habits at home.
As always, I am here to answer your questions and address your concerns. I also welcome your ideas about how we can continue to strengthen our school and support our scholars. Our families are an important part of this work because at Boyd, we truly are Better Together!
Sincerely,
Dr. Station
Principal, Boyd Elementary
📚 Academics 📚
Strengthen Reading & Writing Achievement
We are working to increase the number of scholars reading at grade level by strengthening vocabulary, background knowledge, comprehension, and writing skills. Reading and writing go hand in hand—improving one helps strengthen the other.
How You Can Help: Read with your child for 15 minutes every day and provide opportunities to write. Younger scholars can practice writing their name, letters, words, and sentences, while older scholars can write about or summarize what they have read. Limit recreational screen time and make time for conversation. When your child asks “Why?”, talk about it! Explain, introduce new words, and help them build knowledge about the world.
Build Ownership of Learning
We want scholars to take an active role in their learning. Our focus is on Clarity & Engagement.
Clarity: Scholars should know:
What am I learning? • Why am I learning it? • How will I know I’ve learned it?
When scholars understand these three things, they can better focus on the learning and take responsibility for their own progress.
Engagement: Scholars are learning that they have a choice in the focus, effort, and intentionality they bring to each lesson. Using our Engagement Continuum, they will reflect on their engagement and work toward becoming more invested in their learning.
Our goal is to empower scholars to choose learning and take ownership of their success.
🏫 ATTENDANCE 🏫
Be Here. Every Day. All Day.
Our goal is to improve attendance by reducing absences, late arrivals, and early departures.
Scholars cannot reach their academic goals if they are not in school. Learning happens every day, all day. Beginning in kindergarten, each year builds on the learning from the year before, so every day and every minute matter.
How You Can Help:
- Bring your scholar to school every day, on time, and keep them here all day.
- Schedule appointments after school or during school breaks whenever possible.
- Establish a consistent nighttime routine that allows for at least 8 hours of sleep.
To make attendance fun, we will have monthly attendance contests and celebrations to encourage our scholars to get excited about being at school!
We also understand that families may experience challenges that make regular attendance difficult. If you need support getting your scholar to school consistently and on time, please reach out. We are here to help in any way we can.
Be Here. Every Day. All Day. Because We Are Better Together!
September Attendance Challenge
National Attendence Awareness Month
September is National Attendance Awareness Month, and we are celebrating by making attendance fun while building habits that will help our scholars succeed all year! The challenges are designed to get our Bright Beavers excited about being here every day, on time, and all day!
🌟 Star Class of the Week: Each week, the class with the highest average attendance percentage in each grade level, will earn a special Friday celebration.
⭐ Perfect Attendance Challenge: Scholars who are present, on time, and stay all day from September 2–October 2 will earn a special prize.
🏠 Families—We Need You!
You are an important part of our attendance team! Help your scholar succeed by making daily, on-time attendance a priority. Set consistent bedtime and morning routines, prepare clothes and backpacks the night before, schedule appointments outside of school hours when possible, and talk with your scholar about why being at school every day matters.
Most importantly, if something is getting in the way of your scholar getting to school, please let us know. We want to partner with you, problem-solve, and help however we can.
Let’s work together to make September a month of GREAT attendance! We can only get Better, when we are all Together.
Attendance Awareness Month Spirit Week
🦫 Behavior 🦫
Be Your Beaver Best
We are committed to creating a school where every scholar is Safe, Respectful, and Responsible. At the beginning of the year and throughout the year, scholars are explicitly taught our 3 B’s: Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible and what those expectations look like in the classroom, hallway, restroom, cafeteria, bus, arrival, dismissal, assemblies, and other school spaces.
Teaching positive behavior is an important part of academic success. When scholars make positive choices, teachers can focus on teaching, scholars can focus on learning, and we can maximize valuable instructional time.
How You Can Help: Reinforce the 3 B’s at home by reminding your scholar that you expect them to:
- Be Safe — keep hands, feet, and objects to themselves and follow safety procedures.
- Be Respectful — use kind words, listen to adults, respect others, and accept redirection.
- Be Responsible — follow directions the first time, come prepared to learn, and take responsibility for their choices.
Talk with your scholar about being their “Beaver Best,” and support school expectations and procedures when concerns arise. When home and school communicate the same expectations, scholars understand that we are all working together to help them succeed.
You are part of our Beaver community, and We Are Better Together!
📱 Stay Connected with ClassDojo!
ClassDojo is our primary communication tool between teachers and families. Teachers use Dojo to share important information, updates, and messages. It is also where families can see the Dojo Points their scholar is earning for demonstrating our 3 B’s—Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible.
🦫 Earn It. Save It. Celebrate It!
Scholars can use their Dojo Points to:
- Redeem points every two weeks for fun prizes and activities.
- Earn 60 or more points each quarter to participate in our Beaver Best Celebration!
Families Can Help: Check ClassDojo at least once each day, celebrate the positive points your scholar earns, and encourage them to keep making choices that show their Beaver Best!
Not connected yet? Contact your scholar’s teacher for ClassDojo sign-up information so you don’t miss important school and classroom communication.
💙 CLIMATE & CULTURE
Better Together
We want Boyd to be more than a school—we want it to be a community where every scholar feels safe, supported, valued, and connected. Learning happens best when scholars trust the people they are learning from and feel connected to the people they are learning with.
Through our Building Brighter Beavers Morning Meetings, scholars will learn and practice important life skills such as building friendships, managing emotions, solving problems, communicating with others, and self-regulating. We will model what it means to support one another, help each other grow, and encourage others to do their best.
How You Can Help: Get your scholar to school on time so they are ready for Morning Meeting at 8:50 a.m. Ask them what they are learning during Morning Meeting and encourage them to practice those skills at home.
One of our most important messages is “Use Your Words, Not Your Hands.” Please reinforce this at home by encouraging your scholar to talk through problems, express how they feel, ask an adult for help, and walk away when needed. Learning to handle conflict with words is not only important for school—it is a skill that will benefit them throughout life.
Together, we are building a community of Brighter Beavers because We Are Better Together!

Pick-Up & Drop-Off Procedures
Please read carefully — these procedures keep our scholars safe.
- Entering campus:
- Enter the loop from Boyd St and follow the one-way traffic flow (red arrows).
- Keep the line moving:
- Pull all the way forward until there's no gap between you and the car in front of you.
- Don't stop where you see your child's class, staff will bring your scholar to you.
- Loading zone:
- Staff will only load/unload students in the yellow fire lane ("Pick Up/Drop Off Loading").
- Never stop in the one-way drive-thru lane to get your scholar as it's not safe and blocks traffic for others.
- Stay in your vehicle:
- Parents/Guardians must remain in the car in the loading lane — staff will walk and/or send your scholar to you.
- If you'd like to get out and walk up to get your scholar, please park in a designated parking stall first.
- Do not exit your car in the loading or drive lane.
- To speed things up:
- Place your Parent Pick-Up Info Card on your dashboard so staff can spot it and get your scholar to you faster.
A few reminders:
- Please be patient the first few days as everyone adjusts to the process.
- Be respectful and responsive to Boyd staff directing traffic.
Morning Drop-Off & Pick Up Reminders
🚪 Morning Drop-Off
Now that we are entering our third week of school, we ask families to begin allowing scholars to walk to class independently. Our staff are throughout the building each morning to help scholars get where they need to go.
Developing independence helps scholars build confidence, responsibility, and a sense of belonging. Even our youngest Beavers can learn, “I know where to go, I know what to do, and I can do it!”
⚠️ Parents & Guardians: Please Sign In
All parents, guardians, and visitors entering the building beyond the main entrance must first report to the front office and sign in. This includes families who are:
- Walking a scholar to their classroom
- Walking a scholar into the cafeteria
For the safety of all scholars and staff, please do not proceed to classrooms or the cafeteria without signing in at the front office first.
- Once your scholar is in the classroom, please keep morning goodbyes brief so teachers can begin morning routines and prepare for the learning day.
- Doors open at 8:30 AM. Please do not drop off scholars before 8:30 AM, as there is no adult supervision before this time.
- NEW PROCEDURE: If your scholar arrives after the tardy bell (8:50 AM), a parent or guardian must accompany their scholar(s) to the office and sign them in.
We also want to make sure families are familiar with our afternoon dismissal procedures. Following these expectations helps us keep dismissal safe and running smoothly for everyone.
- Dismissal begins at 4:05 PM. We encourage families to keep scholars at school through dismissal whenever possible. Our teachers teach bell-to-bell, and leaving early means missing valuable instructional time.
- If your scholar must be picked up early for an appointment, please plan to arrive before 3:30 PM. This allows the office to call for your scholar before dismissal routines begin.
- If your scholar’s dismissal plan changes, please notify the office by 3:00 PM so we have time to communicate the change and ensure your scholar gets home safely. You may also communicate changes with your child’s teacher through ClassDojo.
Health Reminders
If your child requires an inhaler, prescription medication, or a refill, please be sure to send it to school along with the required doctor’s note. Our school nurses will do their best to notify you when supplies are running low, but we also ask that families keep track of their child’s medication needs to help avoid any gaps in treatment.
Thank you for helping us ensure that every scholar has what they need to remain healthy, focused, and ready to learn each day.
