LANGUAGE ARTS

8th graders are off to a great start with their independent reading books. Students have been practicing monitoring their reading with the check for understanding strategy and using the SWBS (Somebody, Wanted, But, So) strategy for writing summaries. These skills help support reading and writing across all genres, but are particularly helpful with our reading response journals (a kind of spiral review activity).

ALGEBRA

Students are learning/reviewing how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide real numbers, how to evaluate algebraic expressions, and how to identify linear, quadratic, and absolute value functions from graphs and equations. Students take class notes most days in their math binder / Interactive notebook. Please ask your student to see their class notes to see what they are working on! Students have also been using Delta Math which is a computer program. This math program is a great way to practice because it provides a “show example” button that they can click to see multiple examples along with videos. It also provides them with great feedback. Most of the time students will need to turn in work for this practice assignment.

MATH 8

Students are learning/reviewing how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers, how to evaluate algebraic expressions using order of operations and properties, and how to solve two-step equations and linear inequalities. Students take class notes most days in their math binder / Interactive notebook. Please ask your student to see their class notes to see what they are working on! PAES Lab

PAES (Practical Assessment Exploration System) lab is a pathway course offered this year for all eighth graders. PAES is a work development curriculum that is used in a classroom as a preliminary work site where students learn job and life skills, explore many work areas, and learn what type of jobs they are good at and enjoy doing. The PAES lab operates in a simulated work environment, students become employees and staff become supervisors.

We are in full swing and working our way through 264 possible jobs. It is self-paced as jobs build in level and difficulty.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mrs. Hess. erica.hess@marshall.k12.mn.us

p.s. Do you have fabric scraps (1/4 yard in size) that you are no longer using/needing? If so we would love to use them. :)

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Students have started the year off strong and have fully immersed themselves in a fitness lifestyle, and it’s been inspiring to see their dedication and enthusiasm.

Presidential Physical Fitness Pre-Test

At the start of the quarter, students completed the Presidential Physical Fitness Pre-Test, which assesses their current fitness levels. This comprehensive evaluation includes exercises such as curl-ups, sit and reach, pull-ups, shuttle runs, and the mile run. The results will help students identify areas for improvement and set personal fitness goals.

Fitness Activities

Over the past couple of weeks, students have engaged in a variety of exercises, including core strengthening routines, yoga sessions, and dynamic circuit training. These activities not only enhance their physical abilities but also promote mindfulness and overall well-being.

Creating Personal Strength Training Programs

One of the highlights thus far this quarter has been the opportunity for students to create their own strength training programs. They designed customized workouts that suit their individual fitness levels and preferences. It’s been great to see them putting these programs into practice and taking ownership of their fitness journeys!

Health Education

In addition to physical activities, we are focusing on the skeletal and muscular systems in the classroom. Students are learning about the importance of these systems in supporting movement and overall physical performance.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Students have started off the year focusing on the Themes of Geography – location, place, region, human-environment interaction, and movement. We’ve learned how these themes are all connected and how their concepts are used more than we know. We’ve started to create maps that include our Continents and Oceans, then maps that break down North America, and most recently now the U.S. Up next we will be reviewing major historical points of the U.S. being founded and developed, as well as how the landscape helped shape our country.

SPANISH

So far in Spanish we have learned about cognates (words that look and sound alike in two languages and mean the same thing) and are now working on the super seven unit (the most commonly used seven verbs in Spanish). Students have also been learning numbers, days of the week, months of the year, and question words through our calendar routine. They completed the first project of the quarter, the Yo soy poster. This poster allows them to describe themselves in Spanish using the verb soy (“I am”). We are off to a great start!

ADVANCED SPANISH

In Advanced Spanish, students have been working on reading and writing through daily free reading time and twice weekly journaling. They have also been learning about the geography and culture of Spanish-speaking countries through music, videos, geography notebooks, and cooking. Students prepared Helado Abuela María, a Cuban ice cream, and Morir Soñando, an orange juice and milk-based drink from the Dominican Republic.

SCIENCE

Students in Physical Science have started the year learning all about matter, as well as how matter can change. We have had the opportunity for many labs and hands-on days. Soon, we will move into our energy and thermal energy units! Below, you will find a photo of our “Penny Lab” in which students in which students tested surface tension, figuring out which side of a penny can hold more drops of water.

ART

The 8th grade students started off their year with a pre-assessment over the Elements of Art that we learned last year. Our first unit was on the Principles of Design, which are the building blocks of the Elements of Art. After a successful unit, the students used their newfound knowledge to complete an escape room. From there on out, the students create a color theory project. They were required to do 8 small drawings that depicted the following color theories: Primary colors, secondary colors, warm colors, cool colors, complementary colors, neutral colors, and all colors. They created some epic works of art that are on display. We are starting our 4-Style art design project, where students draw out their favorite cartoon characters and use 4 different styles of art. For example, they could make their character drip, show them through an X-ray, make them neon, or have them glitch. We just started this project, but everyone is doing great so far. For our next project, we will dive into the fun properties of clay and how to make ceramic. The students have been great artist so far and I can't wait to see how the rest of the quarter turns out!

MUSIC

The band is off to a strong start, working on our warm-ups and concert music. We are looking forward to sharing our work with you in November!

Orchestra is completing the early year set-up and starting on a few songs for the first concert in late November.
