Welcome to a brand new school year at Burbank! I hope your family has had a wonderful first week and that your child is beginning to feel more comfortable with their classroom, teachers, and new routines. The first week of preschool is exciting, but it can also be a big adjustment. Some children walked through our doors ready to jump right in, while others needed a little more time and reassurance. Both are completely normal. Our staff has worked hard to make every child feel safe, supported, and welcome.

It has been wonderful to see our classrooms come to life as students explore new spaces, build relationships, and begin learning classroom routines. Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and trust during this busy opening week. We are grateful to have your family as part of the Burbank community and look forward to a wonderful year together!

Be Safe, Be Kind Be Safe, Be Kind

At Burbank, “Be Safe, Be Kind” is the shared language we use to help children understand expectations throughout the school day. Instead of giving students a long list of rules for every classroom and shared space, these two simple ideas provide a consistent foundation that can grow with them. They help children begin to understand how their choices affect themselves, their classmates, and the larger Burbank community.

Teachers bring this language into classroom routines, play, transitions, and problem solving in ways that are meaningful and appropriate for young children. Being safe might mean using materials carefully, keeping our bodies in control, or asking an adult for help. Being kind might mean including a friend, using caring words, helping clean up, or giving ourselves time to calm down. Our goal is to teach and model these skills, then recognize children as they begin putting them into practice.

Each week, we will celebrate students who demonstrate what it means to be safe and kind as our Burbank Ambassadors. These students are not expected to be perfect. They are being recognized for meaningful moments when they made a thoughtful choice, helped someone, cared for their classroom, or showed kindness to themselves or others.

We are excited to introduce our very first Be Safe, Be Kind Ambassadors of the school year

Thank You!

The start of this school year looked different than any of us expected. The severe weather and power outages created significant challenges throughout our community, and we sincerely appreciate the patience and flexibility shown by our staff and families. Despite the disruptions, everyone came together to help our students experience a welcoming and successful first week. It may not have been the start we planned, but our community truly found a way to start the year with heart.

Missing Meet the Teacher Night was a real loss for Burbank. It is typically one of our first opportunities for students to visit their classrooms, teachers to connect with families, and families to begin getting to know one another. I hope that throughout this first week, you have had an opportunity to connect with your child’s teachers and begin building those important relationships. Please know that our staff is always happy to hear from you.

We also hope you will join us tomorrow for the PTO’s Popsicles on the Playground. This is a great opportunity for children to spend time together and for families to connect with others in the Burbank community. Thank you again to our staff, families, and PTO for helping us begin the year on such a positive note.

A Special Visit from Dr. Hunt

Dr. Hunt, our superintendent, stopped by Burbank this week to welcome back our staff and students. Even with everything happening across the district over the past two weeks, he still made time to visit our building, connect with staff, and read with some of our friends.

Our students always enjoy welcoming visitors into their classrooms, and we appreciate Dr. Hunt taking time out of his busy schedule to help us begin the new school year. His visit was a wonderful reminder of the strong connection between Burbank and the larger Upper Arlington Schools community.

After engaging the community through an extensive master planning process and extending the timing of an operating levy by an additional year, the Board of Education will return to voters on the November 3, 2026 ballot with a combined operating levy and bond issue. The $273.5 million bond issue (an estimated 2.25 mills above current collections) would fund the second phase of the master plan, while the 4.9-mill operating levy would provide funding to maintain the district’s current educational programs, services and daily operations. Combined, the measures would result in an estimated increase of approximately $1,250 per year (or $105 per month) for a home valued at $500,000 according to the Franklin County Auditor.
