Principals Corner
Dear Grant Gator Community,
Starting next week, our 1st through 4th-grade students will take their i-Ready Reading and Math Diagnostic assessments.
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that helps teachers understand what each student knows and what they are ready to learn next. It measures growth throughout the year and tailors learning to meet your child's specific needs.
Important Reminders for Families:
Good Rest & Breakfast: Ensure your student gets a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast before school.
On-Time Attendance: Arriving on time helps ensure students take the assessment in a comfortable environment with their classmates.
Reassurance: Because i-Ready is an adaptive test, questions will become easier or harder based on your child's answers. Remind them that it is completely normal not to know every answer. They just need to try their best!
Thank you for your support as we partner together for a successful school year!
Mrs. Sherri Mazzoni
M-STEP Parent Reports
Last spring, Michigan students in grades 3–8 and 11 completed the state-required assessments: the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress (M-STEP) and the Michigan Merit Exam (MME). These assessments evaluate critical thinking, problem-solving, and subject-area knowledge aligned with state standards. Many sections require students to write out responses and demonstrate their reasoning, rather than simply selecting multiple-choice answers.
On Monday, your child will bring home their official Parent Report from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). This report provides valuable insight into their performance from last spring. Please keep in mind that these results represent just one snapshot of your child's learning journey. Our staff is fully prepared to build on their strengths this school year while providing targeted support whenever extra help is needed.
Additional information about M-STEP and test results can be found on the Michigan Department of Education’s website at www.michigan.gov/mstep.
Cell Phone and Smart Watches Policy
Cell Phones and Smart Watches: If a student brings a cell phone to school, it should be in their backpack in their locker/cubby and turned off. Students should not be using their cell phones during the school day. If a student wears a smartwatch, it should not be used to contact home. If a student needs to contact home, they let their teacher know so we can send them to the office to make the call.

Grant Character Element for SEPTEMBER is Growth Mindset!
A growth mindset is a theory or an idea that our brains are not fixed at a certain intelligence level. We can continue to expand our minds and intelligence by pushing ourselves to do new things, trying hard things, and redoing something until it’s successful. A fixed mindset is that either you can do it or you can’t. For example, either you can paint well or you can’t. There is no in-between.

Label the item clearly with your student’s full name.
Place the item on the designated drop-off cart.
Email your student’s teacher to let them know an item is waiting for them.

Important Update: Classroom Celebration & Food Allergy Policy
Dear Grant Elementary Families,
Welcome to the new school year! We are thrilled to have your children back in our halls and are looking forward to a fantastic year ahead.
To ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students—especially given the number of severe and life-threatening food allergies in our school community—please do not send in food treats for birthdays or special occasions unless specifically requested by staff or the PTA.
We love celebrating special milestones with our students and will continue to recognize birthdays in fun, safe, and creative ways in the classroom that keep all children included. Non-food alternatives (such as stickers, pencils, or a favorite book to share with the class) are always welcome if you wish to send something in.
Thank you for your partnership and understanding in keeping our students safe and healthy.
Warmly,
The Grant Staff
