Dear Gilbert Community,

It is with great enthusiasm and a deep sense of purpose that I welcome you to the start of a new school year at TGS. Whether you are a returning family or joining us for the first time, we are thrilled to have you as part of our vibrant and diverse school community.

At The Gilbert School, we are committed to fostering a nurturing environment where every student is known, challenged, and supported. This principle guides our work each day as we strive to provide an education that empowers students to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

We believe that education is most powerful when it is a partnership between school and home. Your involvement, feedback, and support play an essential role in the success of our students. We encourage you to stay engaged—through school events, parent-teacher conferences, volunteer opportunities, and open lines of communication with our faculty and staff.

As your new Head of School, I am honored to lead this incredible community. I look forward to the year ahead and the many accomplishments we will celebrate together. Let us continue to cultivate a culture of kindness, respect, curiosity, and resilience.

Thank you for being part of The Gilbert School family. Here’s to a year of meaningful learning, joyful connections and shared success, both in and out of the classroom.

Warm regards,

Michael Susi, Head of School

The Yellowjacket Marching Band Is Back At It! The Yellowjacket Marching Band Is Back At It!

By Scott Minnerly, Director of Bands

The Yellowjacket Marching Band began its 2025 season with two rehearsals in July followed by pre-season Band Camp in August. Before school even started band members had already been together for over 50 hours! This year's production is entitled "Perennial" and is based on Antonio Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons"! We begin in Spring, head to Summer, ease into Autumn, bundle up in Winter, and then we're back at Spring!

This year's Drum Majors are Kate Hudak & Mackenzie Hale. Mariapaz Avendano Cabra is the Assistant Drum Major. Christina Harrignton is the Color Guard Captain and our section leaders are Kate Hudak (Woodwinds), Alec Marvin (Brass), Ethan Cavajani (Percussion) and Cameron Picard (Assistant-Percussion).

We have several upcoming performances both at home football games and at competitions. Our football game performances are on September 26th, October 3rd, October 25th (Homecoming!), and November 15th (Senior Day). We are performing at Rocky Hill High School on September 27th, Cheshire High School on October 11th, Naugatuck High School on October 18th, and we return to Connecticut State Championships on November 1st! We hope to see you at some of the performances!

The fall season is in full swing. All of our High School Sports have played several games so far. Boys Soccer has been battling with a young team led by Junior Captain James Slauta. They are still looking for their first win of the season, but they are getting better every day.

Girls soccer has also been getting better every game. The young team is showing promise, they were down only 1-0 at halftime against Thomaston who has been a BL powerhouse!

Volleyball got the wins rolling this fall with a big win over Terryville. The team is led by Seniors Mckenzie Valentine, Emma Beres, Keegan Connolly, Addyson Lillie, and Georgia Engel. This is the first win and will help on our road to making the state tournament.

Cross Country participated in the Stratton Brook Invitational in Simsbury. Every runner on our team set a PR at the race! They also had their first league match at Shepaug where Senior Kate Hudak took 9th overall.

The Golf team is steadily improving every match. They shot a team best at their match at Norfolk Country Club against Northwestern. Football and Cheer head to Plainville on Friday 9/12 for their opening game. Good luck GNH!

Middle School games start on Monday 9/15 against Northwestern.

Senior year of high school is an exciting time for most teenagers. However, it can also be stressful for both students and parents balancing schoolwork, extracurricular activities and the college application process. While our counselors will be meeting individually with seniors throughout September to discuss and prepare for their post-secondary plans, parents also play an integral role in the post-secondary planning process. You are invited to join The Gilbert School counselors as they present information on helping you and your student navigate your way through the process. For your convenience, Senior Parent Night will be take place from 5:00 to 6:00 on Thursday, September 18th, right before Open House. We look forward to seeing you there!

Welcome Back, International Students! Welcome Back, International Students!

By Lauren Orr, International Dean of Student Affairs

The Gilbert School is thrilled to welcome our new and returning international students from vast parts of China and Brazil, who have brought their athletic talent, ambitious spirit, and school pride back to our community. Our students have already become vital members of our school community. This year, these students have wasted no time getting involved. They have already become members of our school choir, marching band, and several sports teams, including soccer, volleyball, football, and cross country. We are excited to see all they accomplish this fall, and we look forward to a successful season for our entire Gilbert School family.
