From the Principal’s Desk
The Heart of Our School
As we move further into the school year, I find myself reflecting on what truly makes our school a special place to learn and grow. While our classrooms are filled with rigorous academics and exciting projects, the true "secret sauce" of our success isn't found in a textbook—it’s found in the strength of our community and the depth of our care for one another.
Building Our Village: Community isn’t just a word here; it’s an action. Whether you volunteer your time to help out with an event, field trips or activities, watching our GPS Leaders support their younger peers, or feeling the positive energy when you walk through the halls at BMS, it is clear we believe in supporting each other and when kindness is shown, it spreads to those outside the walls of BMS.
Leading with Care: In a fast-paced world, it is easy to focus solely on the "output". However, I want to reaffirm our commitment to the well-being of our BMS Community. Caring for our students and family’s means:
- Listening first: Ensuring every student and family feels seen and heard.
- Empathy in action: Teaching our children how to navigate challenges with kindness toward themselves and others.
- Mental Wellness: Prioritizing balance and providing the emotional support necessary so students and families can thrive.
Thank you for being such vital partners in this journey. I am incredibly proud to lead a school where "community" is a lived experience and "care" is our primary language.
Warmly,
Kim Monette Principal
Brooklyn Middle STEAM School
SAVE THE DATE!
THURSDAY, APRIL 30TH
Thursday, April 30th is an exciting evening for BMS. We will be hosting not only our Parent/Teacher Conferences from 3:30-7:30pm, but also the STEAM Creativity Fair and the Multicultural Fair on this evening.
Stay tuned for more details as we get closer to April 30th.
STEAM Highlights
6th Grade Minnesota Studies
Students are exploring immigration from the past using Ozobots and maps. By coding their robots to trace immigrant journeys, students are bringing history to life while building STEAM skills and making connections to Minnesota’s story. Thanks to the District279 Foundation for helping to fund this STEAM project for students.
6th Grade English
Mosquito Control visited our 6th grade English classes for a hands-on lesson connected to students’ reading about diseases. Students explored mosquito specimens under microscopes, learned about ticks through an interactive activity, and completed a mosquito activity sheet—making real-world connections to health topics here in Minnesota.
7th Grade Life Science
Students brought cells to life! They created detailed animal and plant cell displays and then presented their models to one another just like scientists—explaining structures, functions, and their thinking.
8th Grade English
We’re thrilled to welcome spoken word artist Frank Sentwali from COMPAS into all 8th grade English classes over the next few weeks! Our students will be engaging in powerful creative workshops that explore voice, identity, expression, and storytelling through poetry. Frank’s work as an educator and artist inspires young people to discover their own stories and share them with confidence. We can’t wait to see the magic that happens when words take flight!
Learn more about Frank and his work here https://www.compas.org/artist/frank-sentwali/
FACS 7
FACS 7 bakers put their skills to the test, creating original cupcake designs and flavors from scratch. From bold flavor combos to creative decorating, they’re showing off their hard work (and having a little friendly competition along the way). Great creativity, teamwork, and some seriously sweet results today
All-School College & Career Day at Brooklyn Middle STEAM School
Students had an exciting day exploring their futures during our All-School College & Career Day! We were grateful to welcome a wide variety of presenters connected to our school, district, and greater community who shared their career paths and experiences. Students didn’t just listen—they engaged in hands-on activities, explored different careers through online games and activities, and reflected by writing thank-you cards to our guests. A powerful day of learning, curiosity, and future dreaming at BMS!

TRANSPORTATION
If you have any questions regarding your students transportation please go to https://www.district279.org/services/transportation or call 763-391-7244.
FirstView bus tracking app and opt in procedure
Existing riders from 2025-26 will only need to declare changes to their needs. If your student currently rides the bus from a stop near your residence or a daycare site and will use that same location for transportation in 2025-26, no action is required, and your student will be routed from that same location. Final bus information will be sent out by email one week prior to the first day of school.
If your student’s needs are changing, please email BusQuestions@District279.org to request a change form. Forms are student specific; please include each student requiring changes in your email correspondence.
The FirstView bus tracking app can be used to track buses, which uses GPS to track your students' bus arrival.
Learn more at district279.org/departments/transportation.
CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES
No cell phones allowed during the academic school day.
Students are discouraged from bringing cell phones or other electronic devices including smart watches, headphones and earbuds/air pods to school. If students choose to bring a cell phone/device to school the expectations are the cell phones, electronic devices including smart watches and earbuds/air pods will remain in the student backpacks/lockers during the academic school day, including lunch, passing times and other non-instructional time. Students assume the risk of damage, theft or loss when choosing to bring a phone or device to school. Cell phone use of any kind is not permitted in locker rooms or bathrooms.
The following consequences are cumulative starting the first day of school and they do not reset until the following school year:
· Initial Warning: The first time staff witnesses a device during the academic day when not permitted, staff will provide the student a warning and allow the student to put the phone away. If the student does not put the phone away, it will be considered a First Offense.
· First Offense: Staff member turns the device into the front office for the remainder of the school day. Student picks up the device at the end of the day. If a student refuses to turn in to the teacher or front office, it will be considered a Second Offense.
· Second Offense: Staff member turns the device into the front office for the remainder of the school day. Parent or guardian is contacted about the offense and student picks up the device at the end of the day. If a student refuses to turn in to the teacher or front office, it will be considered a Third Offense.
· Third Offense: Staff member turns the device into the front office for the remainder of the school day. Parent picks up the device. If a student refuses to turn in to the teacher or front office, it will be considered a Fourth Offense.
· Fourth Offense: Individual call phone plan created for that student. Phone no longer allowed on site.
Students who require the use of cell phones or other electronic devices as reflected in the students IEP or 504 plan may have their device with them at the times designated, but must adhere to all other expectations of the cell phone policy.
Student personal electronic devices are subject to search upon reasonable suspicion that the device has been used in a manner that violates the law or District Policy 505.
