Summer PD Includes Self-Care!

My name is Jessica Torres and I serve as the ESC Region 12 Social Studies content specialist. The purpose of the newsletter is to provide resources specific to social studies content, general instructional tools, resources, updates, and professional development opportunities that are beneficial to all.

I hope that each of you is finding some way to relax and recharge this summer. Your self-care is just as critical to your professional development as any session or conference you will attend this summer. With that being said, I do hope to see many of you this summer as our face-to-face sessions are back! As always, if you ever need assistance or have a question, please do not hesitate to contact me via email (jtorres@esc12.net) or social media (@owl_b_torresedu).

Social Studies TEKS Review

The State Board of Education (SBOE) today announced updates to the TEKS review and revision schedule. Approved at the Board’s April meeting, the updated schedule moves up the review and revision of the social studies TEKS to the 2021-22 school year and pushes back the review and revision of the mathematics TEKS to the 2022-23 school year.

The instructional materials adoption cycle was also revised in response to the changes.

Legislative Updates

There were many bills that went through both the House and the Senate during this last legislative process. I am working to create documents that help you understand what each of them means as it pertains to classroom instruction or how they will impact you as an educator.I hope to release those documents in the July newsletter.

The Indigenous connection to the Underground Railroad | CBC Radio

Most stories of the Underground Railroad follow the narrative of white people helping Black people escape slavery, but overlook the involvement of Indigenous allies who often risked their own lives to help freedom seekers cross into Canada safely. Historian Roy Finkenbine is among those rewriting that history.
