Safe Schools, Strong Skills Improvement Bond
Remember to vote November 3rd
This November, Chippewa Valley Schools residents will have the opportunity to vote on an important proposal that would help us make critical safety and security enhancements districtwide and upgrade school infrastructure to help keep our students safe, warm, and dry.
The proposal would not increase the current millage rate for our schools. The Chippewa Valley Schools Safety and Improvement Bond Proposition was carefully crafted with input from our community, including our 60-member Design Advisory Team, 14 focus groups, building walkthroughs and more than 1,200 responses to our community survey. It builds on our 2018 Bond through continued investment in the latest safety enhancements to help keep our students and schools safe and prepare our students for in-demand careers.
If passed, the proposal would support safety enhancements districtwide, including upgraded security camera systems and an upgraded access control system, and equip district buildings with emergency mobile communication, upgraded generators, and fire alarms. This proposal would also improve or replace aging infrastructure in our oldest school buildings, including things like roofs, heating and cooling systems and parking lot upgrades.
The Safety and Improvement Bond Proposition would also support career-technical programs that help students compete for in-demand, good-paying jobs, including in the skilled trades. If passed, every dollar spent will be tracked on a public website to ensure taxpayer dollars are spent wisely.

Reminders:
Parents, please remind your child(ren) that whatever lunch they chose to order the day before in their classroom's is the lunch they will receive the next day in the cafeteria. Students can't change their mind the day of since lunches are ordered a day in advance.
The parking lot at the front of the school is for staff, not for parents. There have been staff who come in later and cannot find spots because parents are taking up all the free spots in the staff lot, rather than going to the parent lot. Also make sure you are parking in an actual parking spot. Busses has been having trouble coming and going due to people parking in areas that are not designated as parking spots.
Students will be going outside for recess as long as the real feel temperature is above 20 degrees. Please send your child with appropriate clothing including a jacket, hat and gloves. Sending them with an extra pair of pants and socks is also recommended when the snow starts flying in case they get wet.

Safety Drills
Keeping our students and staff safe is a top priority at Chippewa Valley Schools. By law, we are required to do 10 safety drills a year: 5 fire, 2 severe weather and 3 lockdown. Our lockdown drills are designed to protect against an intruder in the building. We are using current research to tell us the best ways to protect our students. Our staff has been trained on active shooter scenarios and the concepts of avoid, deny, and defend.
Lesson plans were developed so our students and staff can practice a variety of lockdown and evacuation drills in the event of an emergency. These drills now look different than what was done in the past. In some instances, instead of locking down, students may be asked to evacuate. We want parents to know these plans have been carefully developed for all grade levels and will be shared in a thoughtful, sensitive manner that is age-appropriate even for our youngest learners.
At the elementary level, our lesson plans and vocabulary for lockdown drills will follow the book โIโm Not ScaredโฆIโm Preparedโ by Julia Cook. The book is written for teacher use with elementary students and uses terms that are easily understood by children, such as describing a dangerous person as a wolf that needs to be avoided. We will also reinforce the concepts of stop, look, and listen. You can view a copy of the book by clicking here.
Parents, you may hear from your child that we are practicing these important drills at school. Please join us in reassuring them that schools are safe places to be and that there is an entire team of dedicated, trained adults that work hard every day to make sure they are safe. If you have any questions about these practice drills, please do not hesitate to contact our staff.
Talk to your child about the importance of reporting any situation that makes them feel uncomfortable. Remind them to talk to you, a teacher, an administrator or another trusted adult. By working together, we can continue to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and community.

FOOD SERVICE
Michigan School Meals will be the policy for the 2024-2025 School Year. The Michigan government has funded the school meals for Michigan Public School students that are not covered by the Federal Reimbursements. This means all students will eat their breakfast and lunch at no cost. Michigan School Meals is a Michigan initiative however, all USDA guidelines and regulations are still in effect. This includes still requiring families to fill out an Education Benefits Form.
While the Education Benefit form help with student eligibility for school meals and summer EBT qualifications, they are more important for other school programs. If the number of applications decline, funding for some programs can be lost since the overall funding for schools is based on the number of Education Benefits Forms turned back into Food Service.
To see if your family qualifies for additional benefits, please fill out a free/reduced application at chippewavalley.familyportal.cloud. Applications are good for one school year and should be completed each year unless you are notified that your child qualifies for free/reduced meal benefits for the current school year.
