NHE Family Handbook

A Note From Mrs. Smith A Note From Mrs. Smith

NHE Families,

We hope everyone had a great day off on Monday in observance of MLK Day. We were excited to welcome everyone back today for another great week at NHE! Our students will have meaningful opportunities to learn, reflect, and grow together, and we are so proud of their focus, effort, and character as we continue ‘Leveling Up’ in the second semester.

Today, our 2nd and 4th graders participated in the RISD Upstander Program, a partnership with the Dallas Holocaust and Human Rights Museum. Through age-appropriate, engaging presentations, students explored what it means to stand up for others, show courage, and make positive choices—important lessons that connect directly to our Character Education work across the district.

Students have worked hard during MAP testing, demonstrating perseverance and ownership of their learning as they worked toward personal growth goals. We have one more day of assessments and make-up testing this week. We are beyond proud of the growth and progress our students and teachers continue to make.

Warmly,

Jenni Smith
NHE Principal

Capturing Kids Hearts January Focus: Respect Capturing Kids Hearts January Focus: Respect

    What is Respect?

Respect is the willingness and ability to act professionally and thoughtfully with ourselves and others. Leaders can deal respectfully with opposition and provide space for both dignity and differences to coexist.

    Why focus on Respect?

    • Respect contributes to a positive culture. People feel safe, supported, and engaged in the context of thoughtful social, emotional, civic, and intellectual interactions.
    • Respect decreases conflict. Respect helps us, and others, to be able to express ourselves without fear of being judged, humiliated, or discriminated against.
    • Respect encourages empathy. Respect helps us to understand each other and put ourselves in someone else shoes.

During the months of January and February, the Live Wise Live Healthy focus will be on healthy relationships. All students will receive reminders about what to do if they think that they are being bullied, and how to report this to their teachers, counselors, or other trusted adults at school and at home. Posters will be hung up in the restrooms (secondary) and in/near the restrooms at elementary with information about healthy relationships and friendships.

Elementary students will participate in counselor- led lessons about friendship, kindness and empathy, and peer-pressure refusal skills (5th/6th).Secondary students will participate in bullying prevention lessons during their advisory period.

Relationship care is an essential part of daily life. RISD values healthy relationships

and the positive outcomes healthy relationships produce for all. January and February will concentrate on helping students, staff and community understand the value of healthy relationships.

During the week of February 9th-13th, students will participate in Kindness Week activities. Campuses will send out campus-specific information about Kindness Week on their campus.

    • Enjoy lunch at the visitor table. For safety reasons, visitors should sit at the designated visitor table with their child only. Parents may not sit in the cafeteria.

    • Friends can’t join your table. We know kids love company, but we ask that you enjoy this time just with your child.
