Counselor Connection

Dear Eastwood Elementary Families,

It's hard to believe we are wrapping up another great school year! I truly enjoyed visiting the K-3rd grade classrooms each month for our SEL (social emotional learning) lessons. I hope your children mentioned my visits! :) I visited again in May for our final lessons of the school year…

In Kindergarten, students learned about good sportsmanship with an emphasis on playing fair and accepting loss. Then, students enjoyed practicing good sportsmanship during a team game and board game. Sportsmanship is The Eagle Way!

In 1st grade, students continued to learn about their superpower - the power to CHOOSE. We focused on making helpful choices at school and spent more time understanding the connection between choices and consequences. Making Eagle Way choices will help students to learn, have friends, be happy, and feel safe.

In 2nd grade, students identified the components of quality I-Messages as a strategy for talking it out during conflict resolution/problem-solving. I-Messages include three parts: I feel ___ (tell them how you feel) when you ___ (tell them what they did and be specific) Could you please ___? (tell them what you need to feel better). Students practiced delivering and receiving I-Messages.

In 3rd grade, students reviewed the "sticky" friendship situations and strategies they learned in the previous lesson. The three types of situations include "competition," "rules," and "changes." Ask your child and see what they recall! Students practiced navigating these friendship situations using role-play and a variety of strategies, such as ignoring/walking away, using helpful self-talk, using an I-Message, continuing to be friendly (respectful), and finding different people to spend time with and talk to.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out any time with questions or concerns. I am looking forward to watching your children continue to grow. Have a wonderful, safe summer!

Dear Eastwood Families,

We’ve wrapped up a great school year! In my first year as an Eagle, I was able to visit each 4th and 5th grade classroom monthly to practice many life skills, meet with small groups about various topics and see students for individual needs throughout the year. I’m looking forward to next year!

In our final lesson for the year, 4th and 5th grade focused on career awareness and exploration leading up to Career Day! 4th graders completed a career scavenger hunt looking for information about different careers available in our world. 5th grade completed an interest inventory and matched with career clusters that could potentially be a great fit in the future. While these students won’t be making any career decisions soon, career awareness and exploration can increase motivation and engagement in school, encourage self discovery, build goal setting skills, and prepare students for middle school and high school course choices.

Thanks for a great year!
