The Academy Avenue Announcements

Dear Academy families,

The year is off to a great start! Students in grades 1-5 began on Tuesday, followed by our incoming class of 2035 kindergarteners on Thursday. They were lined up and excited, bright and early, ready to meet their teachers and see their new classroom. For our fifth grade students, they also excited to move into the fifth grade wing and experience for their first time in their school careers, the team teaching model. As this is their last year at Academy, this model will give them experience they will need for when they get their turn to go to the new Chapman Middle School, but that's next year. Needless to say, these past few days were exciting and wonderful to get our school family back in session and envision all there is to offer in what lies ahead for our children.

One of the goals of the first week of school is to establish and reinforce expectations. As Academy is a PBIS school. Our guiding principles are identified in the acronym "R.O.A.R". This stands for Respect, Ownership, Achievement, and Responsibility. In order to get it right from the start, we take the time to go over expectations beyond the classroom. Students learn about what's expected in the hallways, bathrooms, cafeteria, playground and school buses. We award students praise paws which can be exchanged into special prizes, raffle tickets, and even fun classroom events. In fact, many classrooms have earned dozens of paws already, be sure to ask your kids about PBIS and ROAR...chances are they may have earned a few praise paws too!

As with all new school years, we warmly welcome you to attend our Open House, it is this Monday night, September 12, 2022 from 6-8 PM. Please come meet your child's teacher, see her/his classroom and learn all about what to expect throughout the school year ahead. It is a wonderful way to hear what's in store as well as to learn more about the curriculum and many of our great programs.

I want to thank the Parent Council for all of their hard work in hosting several different events to help kick our school year off with some fun activities for our kids and families. I strongly invite you to join and support them, as their work supports our school and enhance the opportunities/activities/events we can offer to enrich the academic experience.
