Interim Superintendent's Message:
SPS Community,
As we look ahead to next week, Salem Public Schools will take an important step in the selection of our next Superintendent of Schools. From June 15–17, we will welcome the superintendent finalists to our schools and community for a series of site visits, meetings, and community conversations.
Throughout their visits, finalists will have the opportunity to experience what makes Salem such a special place to learn and work. They will visit our schools, meet with students and staff, and participate in focus groups and community forums to hear directly from the people who know our district best.
I encourage our families to take part in the community forums and share their hopes, priorities, and aspirations for the future of Salem Public Schools. Your voices are an essential part of this process and will help shape the next chapter of our district. Interpreters and childcare for children 4 and over will be available. The Community Forums will be hosted June 15-17 in the Saltonstall Auditorium on 211 Lafayette Street from 6:00-7:30.
As the Interim Superintendent, I am excited for our finalists to see firsthand the incredible work happening every day across our schools—the dedication of our educators, the talents and strengths of our students, and our shared commitment to equity, opportunity, and belonging.
Thank you in advance to everyone who will participate in these visits and help showcase the very best of Salem Public Schools.
For families unable to attend, each session will be streamed live via Zoom and the Salem Access TV YouTube channel. Families who submitted questions ahead of time will have their questions posed to our candidates at the session.
The schedule for our candidates is as follows:
Jorge Allen: Monday, June 15 (6-7:30 p.m.)
Andrew Bott: Tuesday, June 16 (6-7:30 p.m.)
Tommy Welch: Wednesday, June 17 (6-7:30 p.m.)
We hope you take full advantage of meeting our next superintendent.
Finally, with less than 10 days left in the school year, it is not too soon to begin thinking about our Summer Learning/Reading Program. I am thrilled to announce we have two creative and exciting rewards for our Summer Learning Champions:
Any student who completes a reading log will be entered into a drawing to be featured in a roundtable discussion with Salem Mayor Dominick Pangallo on Salem Access TV to discuss their favorite books.
Additionally our Summer Learning Champions will have their favorite books prominently displayed at the Salem Public Library with their name in a special Salem Public Schools recommended books section.
I also want to make our families aware of the terrific summer programs offered by the Salem Public Library, including Summer Reading Bingo, in which students can win a host of prizes. Other programming includes family circles, book clubs, Lego club and much more.
For more information, visit our Summer Learning/Reading Program resources at salemk12.org/summer.
Enjoy the weekend,
Kate Carbone,
Interim Superintendent
This week's Magical Moments That Matter recipient is Ms. Veronica Diaz, the Library Media Specialist as well as the 21C OST Program Coordinator at the Bentley Academy Innovation School. Last week, Ms. Diaz's 21C students showcased their projects to Bentley staff and families. Particularly impressive was the work of the Bentley students who partnered with the Real Pirates Museum of Salem to provide recorded Spanish translations of 15 exhibits within the museum (read The Salem News story).
Said the nomination:
"Ms. Veronica is deeply committed to cultivating an environment within the BAIS 21C OST program where students and families feel a sense of belonging. She recognizes that when students feel truly welcomed and seen, they gain the confidence necessary to engage with the world around them. By fostering this foundation of inclusion among students, students are empowered to embrace and explore their own interest, skills and community."
Congratulations Ms. Veronica Diaz!
