Irving Elementary Weekly Update
Week of September 22nd
Principal Message
Irving Families,
The tragedy that occurred in North Berwyn this past week is truly horrendous. Our hearts go out to this family and their school community. Life is so fragile, and we are deeply saddened by what this poor woman and her mother endured. Below is a picture to a small tribute area right outside of their school, where flowers, balloons, and candles have been placed to honor them.
I want to extend a special thank you to Mrs. Cummins, who spent a couple of days at Lincoln School as part of the crisis response team, and to Mrs. Toolan for allowing her to bring Libby along to provide comfort and support during such a difficult time.
On a brighter note, this week marks the beginning of our Parent Mentor Program. Starting on Monday, our parent mentors will be at Irving four days a week for two hours, supporting classrooms in kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and Ms. Gabriele’s class. We are excited about the potential of this program to give teachers an extra set of hands and, more importantly, to help improve our students’ foundational reading skills.
We also have several important events at Irving this week. On Tuesday, September 23rd, we will host our first African American Parent Advisory Committee meeting at 5:00 PM in the Teacher’s Lounge. This group will spend time reviewing our current state as a school as it relates to our African American student population. Together, we will begin the process of identifying our shared values in hopes of shaping a vision for the work that can grow out of this committee. We truly hope you can join us in this important work.
Following that meeting, our PTO meeting will be held at 6:00 PM. Childcare will be provided, and we encourage you to stay and participate in supporting our school community.
On Thursday evening at 6:00 PM, we invite you to join us in the Irving gym for our annual Lotería Night. Lotería is a traditional Mexican game of chance, similar to bingo, but played with images on a deck of cards rather than numbers. It’s always a fun and festive family event, and we’d love to see you there!
Thank you for your continued partnership and support of our Irving community.
